2 Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to our Summer Programming Event! Below you will find snapshots of Salem Public Schools summer programs as well as those of our community partners. Please take a few minutes to review this brochure to help you find the right program for your student. Grades listed are as of September Please check with providers regarding program eligibility and dates. It is important that you do not register the same child for overlapping programs as this prevents others from getting a spot. We greatly value your input and ask that you complete a feedback form at the end of the evening. If you have questions regarding a specific program, please reach out to a representative from the sponsoring organization. Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem is offering a 9-week summer camp, licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, that includes: Summer Brain Gain, a summer learning-loss prevention program, arts & crafts, sports & fitness, daily field trips to places such as: Canobie Lake, Museum of Science, Spectacle Island, Salisbury Beach, Boston Children s Museum, Forest River Park, Winter Island Park and many more. Grade(s) Served Curriculum and activities focus on math, science, literacy, social studies, and engineering. Additional information can be found on our website or call Camp Director, Meghan Murtagh at or mmurtagh@bgcgs.org. K - 7 or ages 5 through 13 years old Monday Friday, 6/29-8/28 7:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. $ per week $25.00 one-time registration fee $75.00 deposit each week registered Childcare assistance vouchers accepted. The Boys & Girls Club welcomes all children, targeting those who come from economicallyfragile homes. We have extensive experience with ELL and children with learning challenges. 2
3 Camp Fire North Shore Camp Waluta: This program, for children entering kindergarten through fourth grade, is our traditional summer camp. Children are placed in groups according to age and participate in activities with that group for the week. Activities include sports and games, skits and songs, nature, arts and crafts, outdoor skills, community service, instructional and free swim. Enrichment and additional activities coordinate with weekly themes. Camp Discovery: This program is for youth entering the fifth and sixth grade in the fall. Youth participate in age appropriate team building activities including outdoor skills, service projects, and weekly field trips. Adventure Camp: New to Camp Fire this summer is our Adventure Camp! Designed for youth in grades seven & eight, we provide opportunities for youth to engage in exciting adventures each week. Youth will spend two days a week off site participating in various hands on activities that will challenge them to explore the outdoors. Some of these activities include paddle boarding, kayaking, Project Adventure & more! Counselor In Training: Our CIT program is a one-month course designed to provide leadership and training for youth in grades 9 & 10. Participants attend for two summers. CIT I runs from July 6 - July 31 & CIT II runs from August 3 - August 28. Grade(s) Served K-10 Monday - Friday, 6/29/15 through 8/28/15 Basic Day: 9:00am - 4:00pm Pre-Camp: 7:00am 9:00am Post-Camp: 4:00pm 5:30pm 3
4 Enrollment Fees: A registration fee of $20.00 per child or $30.00 per family is due in addition to weekly deposits. Deposits: A $25.00 non-refundable/nontransferable deposit for each week is due with your registration form and registration fee. Tuition for the first week at camp is due by Monday, June 22, Payments for future weeks are due on Monday of the previous week. Weekly Fees: Camp Waluta: $160 per week Camp Discovery: $175 per week Adventure Camp: $195 per week Counselor In Training CIT): $340 total for a 4 week session ($75 non-refundable deposit included in this price) Additional Fees: Pre Camp: 7:00am - 9:00am $20.00/week Post Camp: 4:00pm - 5:30pm $20.00/week Open to K-10 students Grade(s) Served For Kids Only Afterschool FKO Summer Learning Program (SLP) at the Bates School - FKO believes that all children should be safe, healthy and engaged in learning during the summer. FKO s summer program provides a variety of camp like experiences complimented by enriching learning opportunities. Last year, over 90% of FKO children maintained or improved their literacy skills during the summer. Kindergarten-5 th Grade Monday Friday, June 29 th through August 14 th *Will remain open until August 28 th at another location TBD. The Bates school shuts down for last two weeks of August. $42 per day - vouchers accepted and financial assistance is available. Open to all 4
5 The House of the Seven Gables Caribbean Connections, Part 3 The Gables will offer its summer enrichment program, Caribbean Connections, to help Latino students who are English language learners learn about local Salem history and the city s longstanding connection with the Caribbean region. Content and instruction will be delivered in English and Spanish at The House of the Seven Gables and at St. Peter s ~ San Pedro Church Community Room. Grade(s) Served 3-5 6/29 7/31/15 Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon FREE ELL students at Levels 1 and 2 Kestrel Educational Adventures Summer Adventures - The Next Step In Your Adventure - Join us this summer for an outdoor adventure steeped in the natural world, rooted in a strong sense of community, and infused with a wild sense of play. If you like our school programs, you'll love our summer programs. Grade(s) Served K 10 This summer we are offering three unique outdoor summer programs for children ages For more information visit us on the web at: Being Animals Session 1: July 6-10 Session 2: July Cost: $200 per session Times: 9 a.m. to 12 noon Ages: 5 to 7 Location: Cox Reservation, Essex Survival! Rockport Session 3: July Session 4: July Cost: $300 per session Times: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages: 8 to 11 Location: Gott Lane Woods, Rockport 5
6 Teen Travel Adventures Session 5: August 3-7 Session 6: August Cost: $350 per session Times: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages: Location: Get Outside Center, Main Street, Gloucester $200 - $350 per participant per session Students interested in the natural world and science; students interested in having wild, muddy adventures. LEAP for Education Healthy Harbors - Middle school students will work in teams to develop and implement servicelearning projects that help address real problems in the marine ecosystem in and around Salem. Breakfast, lunch and bus transportation will be provided daily. Location: Salem High School Grade(s) Served 6,7,8 July 6 th -August 14 th M-F 8:30-3:30 FREE Low-income LEAP for Education/ Salem Academy Charter School Zero Robotics - Middle school students will learn basic computer programming and engineering skills and use their knowledge to program a satellite to complete a challenge as part of a competition against other teams in Massachusetts. Lunch will be provided daily. No transportation will be provided. Location: Salem Academy Charter School Grade(s) Served 6,7,8 July 6 th -August 7 th M-F 9:00-1:00 FREE Low-income 6
7 North Shore Community College Summer of Discovery for Kids Grade(s) Served K-12 July and August $175/wk. Open to all kids interested in learning, having fun, and being on a college campus. Salem Public Schools ELL Department Funded through Title III The Elementary English Language Learner Summer Program - This program is designed to help our students maintain and improve their English language skills, and their understanding of science and math as well. Students will learn through an engaging curriculum organized around a single summer theme for all grades. This summer s theme is: Up, Up, and Away: Learning about Flight. 8 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $0 Elementary English Language Learners Salem State University The Summer Program at Bentley Academy Charter School and Salem State University is an intervention program for struggling readers and writers. Our students explore topics related to the ocean through integrating science, literacy, and art. Interventions are related to students' individual needs. Grade(s) Served 1-5 July 6 July 30, 2015 Monday Thursday 8:00 1:30 p.m. Free Struggling readers and writers; priority is given to Bentley Academy Charter School students Salem State University, LEAP for Education, Inc. and Salem Public Schools (to be held at Salem State University) Salem at SEA program will strengthen and put to use ELL high school students developing English language skills as they research, identify, and work toward serving a need in the Salem community. The team will study local history and modern cultural issues in partnership with historical organizations such as the House of Seven Gables. They will learn how to become active citizens and be encouraged to use their bilingualism as they serve community needs. By the end of the summer students will learn about the community of Salem and better understand ways to effect change in their communities and work together to take action on the issues they identify.
