Computing and Library Services (CLS) is a large and diverse department, as you will see from the accompanying organisation chart. Our activities range from IT infrastructure through to archives and special collections, from telecommunications through to information skills teaching. 3 1. The Role and Person Job Purpose: To manage the purchasing and provision of information resources for staff and students of the University. To act as deputy for the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian Job Duties: 1. Deputise for the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian, as appropriate, e.g. at internal and external meetings and groups. 2. Manage and co-ordinate the work of the Acquisitions team including setting and monitoring team objectives; undertaking staff appraisals and facilitating staff development. 3. Manage, review and develop the acquisition process of library materials for the university, incorporating the provision of material on student reading lists and including monitoring supplier contracts; implementing electronic methods of ordering and invoicing; exploiting supplier electronic products for selection of material and maintaining appropriate licenses. 4. Assist in the monitoring, development and testing of library system developments affecting the acquisitions process of library materials. 5. Manage the outsourcing of bibliographical functions so that supplier services with regards to cataloguing, classification and shelf ready services are fully utilised and the quality of bibliographical records is maintained. 6. Manage the Information Resources and related budgets to ensure that budgets are spent appropriately and to assist the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian in analysing data and setting new budgets 7. Manage all purchasing of information resources for the university library, including credit card purchases and petty cash, using the University s financial management software system and ensuring purchasing takes place within the financial rules of the university. 8. Collect, analyse and present the collection and analysis of statistics to assist academic librarians in formulating recommendations for collection development. 9. Contribute to the planning and implementation of new services and system initiative (including participation on project groups), and to ensure the effective operation of services when established. 10. Liaise with suppliers and publishers on the continuous development of systems and processes; for information on service and developments and to resolve queries as necessary. 11. Participate in projects both in-house and nationally which develop, exploit and preserve electronic information resources for the academic community. 12. Design and deliver training for the above functions to library and University staff as required. 13. Undertake front-line library service desk duties when required

4 14. Contribute to the management and strategic development of Computing and Library Services through membership of the CLS groups and other internal and University committees. 15. Engage actively with professional groups and bodies at regional and national level and seek funding for external grants 16. Other duties assigned from time to time by the Director of Computing and Library Services consistent with the grading of the post

5 The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following attributes: R2283 Attributes Essential Desirable Evidenced Qualifications/ Educated to degree level (any subject) Post Graduate qualification in Librarianship or Application form Training information Science or equivalent and Certificates Experience Knowledge Skills and abilities ECDL or equivalent IT experience Experience of working in a Library or Information Service Experience of managing and training staff Experience of customer service Experience of liaising with suppliers/publishers Knowledge of issues around the purchasing and use of information sources in HE Well-developed IT skills, including the ability to use standard office applications Knowledge and interest in new developments in communications and ICT and their applications in libraries and HE Understanding of the book trade and library supply chain Knowledge of budgeting Knowledge of financial management systems Knowledge of library specific software including library management system software Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) A friendly, approachable manner Self-motivated, and enthusiastic Methodical, accurate and logical Ability to prioritise tasks and work effectively in a busy environment Ability to work in a team and contribute to its success Flexible attitude towards work Ability to use initiative and to think innovatively Contribution to the professional body of knowledge for example through publication or research outputs Experience of working in a further/higher education institution Experience of working in a library acquisitions department Understanding of bibliometric standards Familiarity with electronic ordering Application form, Interview and References Application form and Interview Application form, Interview and References

6 2. The Post Further details This post has a key role to play in the support of the Academic Services Team. The Library Acquisitions Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of staff and processes relating to book acquisitions within the Information Resources Team. He/she oversees existing processes within the team in addition to recommending and managing the implementation of new services. The post holder has responsibility for supervising and training staff and in providing advice to CLS colleagues and to his/her line manager on the impact of developments pertinent to the post. He/she assists the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian in overseeing the Information Resources budget and monitors national contracts regarding the acquisitions budget, including negotiating favourable licences where applicable. The post holder will report to the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian and work within the Academic Services team, alongside the Journals Librarian and Library Systems Manager. It will be essential for the post holder to work closely with a range of CLS staff, such as the Subject Teams. Staff management/development The post holder will lead, manage and develop staff in the Acquisitions Team (currently 5.5 FTE) by: 1. Line managing the Acquisitions Team, including recruitment, development, annual appraisals and regular one-to-one discussions 2. Setting, reviewing and monitoring staff performance targets to ensure individual, team and service objectives are met 3. Providing further coaching and training to update team skills and awareness 4. Contributing to the training of other CLS staff, including one-to-one sessions, meetings, and the preparation of supporting documentation and reports. 5. Act as a deputy for the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian Best value The post holder will assist the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian in compiling and analysing financial data and monitoring the annual budget by: 1. Overseeing the administration of financial and management information for the information resources budget, with particular reference to the acquisitions budget 2. Liaising with CLS colleagues over spend targets and potential budgetary issues 3. Recommending the most cost effective sources of supply, including the monitoring of national and regional contracts 4. Liaising with suppliers to obtain appropriate information for analysing financial data and supplying management reports. Service delivery and improvement The post holder will ensure the efficient running of acquisitions team workflows and identify and implement service improvements by: 1. Allocating and overseeing all tasks within the acquisitions workflow, for titles in both print and electronic format

7 2. Resolving problems and queries arising from the workflow and proactively responding to them 3. Reviewing policies and procedures and developing and implementing new workflows 4. Undertaking the evaluation and implementation of new resources and models of acquisition 5. Working closely with the Collections and Scholarly Communications Librarian, the Journals Librarian and the Library Systems Manager to review, recommend and implement new management tools, such as a replacement for the library management system In addition, the post holder will play a key role in internal projects and groups to improve the service as a whole. The post holder will keep abreast of developments in the library supply chain and will show a commitment to continuing professional development, including membership and participation in external committees as appropriate. Hours of Work: 37 hours per week On appointment, all Computing and Library Services staff undergo a thorough induction process, and they are provided with a detailed training programme in all aspects of their duties. A flexible working hours scheme is in operation which is subject to the operational needs of the service.

12 7. Huddersfield The University is located close to the centre of the thriving West Yorkshire town of Huddersfield. Huddersfield has an extensive range of new retail and social developments with many new shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Near to areas of outstanding natural beauty publicised in TV programmes such as Last of the Summer Wine and Where the Heart Is we are also in easy reach of Leeds and Manchester. Both are just 45 minutes by road and with quicker access via the regular cross Pennine rail service. Huddersfield is surrounded by a number of attractive villages in the Holme and Colne valleys and within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District and the major urban centres of Leeds and Manchester. The cost of housing compares very favourably with other regions in Britain and the choice of where to live is outstanding. The town is well known for its musical traditions, including the world famous Huddersfield Choral Society and the internationally renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
