1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Managing Director (MD) The Post holder is accountable to: Board of Trustees (hereby referred to as the Board ) of Syria Relief. The Post Holder will report to: The Chairman of the Board Overview of the Job: Syria Relief is a young and fast-growing charity. Our progress and development since our launch in September 2011 have been quite spectacular, and we have been very fortunate to have a dedicated and motivated team, led by a Board of Trustees, who are all very involved in the day-to-day affairs of the organisation. Throughout the past few months, our Team had the invaluable support and leadership of an experienced and highly regarded Chief Executive Officer, who is leaving at the end of the agreed twelve-month tenure with the organisation. Syria Relief is at a critical point of its development, and is looking for experienced and inspirational leadership to steer its course in an immensely challenging and constantly evolving environment. It is envisaged that the holder of the new post of Managing Director (MD) will take over much of the role of the CEO, and will work to consolidate our position as the leading Syria-focused UK-based charity. The MD will be responsible for the overall performance of the Syria Relief, its operations and activities of business as dictated by the overall strategy agreed by the Trustees and for maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the Chairman and other Trustees. The MD will provide executive leadership and operational direction to coordinate all activities of Syria Relief in accordance with our goals and objectives to safeguard, grow and build the reputation of the Organisation, in line with the ethos of Syria Relief, and the policies set by the Board, in close working partnership with local, national and international partners.

2 The MD will be expected to demonstrate a personal commitment to organisational excellence; displaying honesty, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics in all decision and actions. The MD is expected to fully implement and maintain a sound and effective organisational structure and manage subsequent organisational change required to develop the national and international reputation of Syria Relief. The MD will have primary responsibility for the smooth operation of Syria Relief, including the development and implementation of organisational policies, procedures, and administrative/financial systems. The MD will also be responsible for effective Public Relations and must possess the ability to communicate effectively at senior management level. The post requires a high degree of relationship management and the post holder should have a proven track record in managing budgets and the ability to win and manage contracts issued by national and international GOs and NGOs. The MD must possess a clear understand of how people work, and must have a positive non-threatening presence which commands respect from staff, and the community at large. The MD must demonstrate an intellectual and professional leadership style that supports attainment of respect and credibility by others. The Managing Director is accountable to the Board of Trustees, and will report directly to the Chairman. The Chairman (or another Trustee designated by the Chairman) will carry out the annual appraisal of the Managing Director. Applicants must have experience at senior level in the management of a charitable organisation. The post is remunerated at a gross salary scale from 40,000 to 52,000, depending on the experience of the successful candidate. Main Areas of Work: A) Leading and managing the organisation: The MD will be responsible for: 1. Providing leadership to the organisation and the management team, including the Operations Manager, Finance and HR Manager, Fundraising Manager, IT Manager, Media Manager, and all appointed Managers in Syria and surrounding countries. The MD will be expected to demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the vision of Syria Relief vision, and demonstrate genuine empathy with the plight of Syrian people.

3 2. Developing a strategic vision for the Charity, in the form of a five-year strategic plan for growth and development. 3. Preparing an annual operational / business plan and a budget for Board approval. 4. Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, including employment law, charity law, company law, health & safety legislation, as well as the rules and regulations stipulated by the Charity Commission. 5. Carrying out a thorough review of existing policies and procedures, or drafting new ones, to ensure their suitability and to ensure the Charity s compliance with the relevant rules, regulations, and legislations governing the work of companies and charitable organisations. B) Finance: The MD will have the responsibility for: 1. Ensuring compliance with the budgetary and financial policies of the Charity, as agreed by the Board. 2. Providing a monthly report against budget to the Trustees, explaining any variations and defining actions to be taken if budgetary targets are not met. 3. Overseeing the timely preparation and submission of the Charity s Annual Accounts, in liaison with the Treasurer, the Finance Manager, and the Charity s Auditors. C) Fundraising and Promotion The MD will be in overall charge of: 1. Encouraging the development of novel and creative thinking that promotes Syria Relief contribution to the wellbeing of Syrian people inside Syria, in surrounding countries, and throughout the world. 2. Drawing up and implementing detailed plans for developing public relations and promoting the Charity, to enhance its public image and corporate identity. 3. Identifying and securing funding to support delivery of the operational plan, and to maximise income by nurturing our existing links with our major INGO supporters and other principal stakeholders, and by developing new links with such INGOs, to ensure the independence of our Charity, and the sustainability of our projects. 4. Developing local, national and international links with other organisations, and ensuring that Syria Relief is clearly and effectively represented on all relevant forums and platforms. 5. Promoting and campaigning for Syria Relief and for the interests of the Syrian people, in conjunction with the Trustees, to Governments, funders, partners, and other voluntary organisations. 6. Overseeing the development, management and on-going maintenance of the Syria Relief website, newsletter, social media tools, publications and other publicity materials.

4 7. Expanding and promoting the profile, role and impact of Syria Relief organisation. D) Working with the Board of Trustees The MD will have a pivotal role in: 1. Providing appropriate presentation and reporting on the progress of the organisation and matters relevant to the discharge of its constitutional and legal obligations 2. Providing sound, accurate and timely information and advice to the Board based on professional knowledge and understanding of the field. It is expected that this will be in the form of a monthly report to be submitted to the Board of Trustees. 3. Assisting the Board of Trustees exercising their legal duties and making sure that they are operating within a good code of practice. 4. Coordinating with the relevant Trustees regarding project implementations on the ground in various parts of Syria and surrounding countries. E) Personnel: The MD will have a vital involvement in: 1. Ensuring the recruitment of appropriately skilled staff to positions, and establishing appropriate remuneration levels and performance-based conditions for staff within the framework agreed by the Trustees. 2. Ensuring the development and maintenance of equitable personnel policies, which are consistent with the aspirations of the Board of Trustees, and is compliant with the relevant legislations. 3. Protecting the interest and welfare of employees, and establishing suitable communication lines with them or their representatives. 4. Ensuring effective management of human resources including recruitment, supervision and development of staff. The MD will perform annual appraisal of the various Managers, and ensure that annual appraisal of all Staff is carried out by their relevant Managers or by the MD, as appropriate. A leader who leads by example. A team builder, able to delegate and with the emotional intelligence to lead creatively and empower others to maximise their strengths. Strong on performance management and able to set and monitor boundaries decisively. Flexibility to travel to Syria or its neighbouring countries to attend meetings and negotiate deals with INGOs, subject to the UK Foreign Office and Home Office advice. CV, Interview & CV, Interview & Interview TERMS AND CONDITIONS: 1. Salary for the post is 40,000-52,000 depending on the experience of the candidate. 2. Hours of work are 42.5 hours per week, including a daily one hour lunch break. There is flexibility over when these hours are worked but it is expected the post holder will attend conferences and meetings as appropriate which will sometimes involve evenings or weekends. 3. Annual Leave entitlement is subject to mutual agreement and is 25 days per annum plus Bank Holidays (England). Arrangements for Eid holidays are subject to prior agreement with the Board of Trustees. 4. No Pension scheme arrangements are to be provided by the employer, except for statuary government requirements. The

7 successful candidate will be encouraged to make his/her own pension provisions. 5. All appointments are made on the basis of a 6-month probationary period, and are subject to satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and written references.
