15 1. ORGANISATION CHART Reports to: Head of School (Biology, Chemistry and Forensic Science) Direct reports: N/A 2. CONTACTS Internal Dean of Faculty, Associate Deans, Head of School, Lecturing staff, other academic and support staff in the Faculty and University, research personnel, students External Wide range of clients and collaborators, academic and research organisations in U.K. and elsewhere. 3. BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITY None 4. PURPOSE OF THE POST To contribute to the achievement of the strategic plans and annual operating objectives of the Faculty and the Department through the delivery of high quality teaching and, where feasible, research in the area of CSI. To contribute the academic development of forensic science in terms of: developing the undergraduate and postgraduate module and award portfolio to recruit and retain appropriately qualified students; developing a research profile where feasible (with internal and external funding) to enhance the reputation of the individual, School, Faculty and University and maintain a high level of scholarship and expertise in the subject area.

16 5. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES a. Contribute to the teaching of CSI at all levels (diploma to postgraduate) with particular emphasis on honours degree and masters levels. b. Contribute to the innovative development, organisation and management of modules and awards within Forensic Science for regional, national and international recruitment. c. Contribute to academic development of Forensic Science d. Develop a profile of research and scholarship (where feasible) in a relevant aspect of CSI, building on existing personal expertise but also linking to the research of colleagues in the department and developing other links within the Faculty and University as appropriate e. Develop links with local public services and industries relevant to CSI, enhancing the regional mission of the University and providing opportunities for collaborative developments in Forensic Science, student placements and income generation f. Carry out other duties as may be reasonably required by the Dean, Associate Deans and Head of School. 6. OTHER FEATURES OF THE ROLE The post holder will be required under the terms of the contract of employment with the University to participate in a staff appraisal scheme. DATA PROTECTION ACT (1998) The role holder will be familiar with the above legislation and will, at all times, be mindful of his/her responsibilities under the above Act. Attention is specifically drawn to the need for confidentiality in handling personal data and the implications of unauthorised disclosure.

17 COMPUTER MISUSE (1990) The role holder will need to have regard for the provision of the above Act and in particular take such steps as may be necessary to prevent unauthorised access to computer material (Section 1) and the unauthorised modification of computer material (Section 3). HEALTH AND SAFETY The role holder may be expected to undertake emergency first aid training. The role holder must ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that he/she is familiar with all relevant Health and Safety legislation and recommendations and that these are observed within his/her areas of responsibility. Attention is drawn to the University s policy statement on Health and Safety at Work, copies of which have been displayed on noticeboards in the University. Any accident in the role holder s area must be entered in the accident book.

18 Attribute Essential Desirable Standard of general education GCSE mathematics and English to grade C or equivalent. A levels in scientific and/or mathematical subjects would be advantageous Academic qualifications Good degree in Forensic Science OR suitable real life experience in Crime Scene Investigation PhD in Forensic Science but not essential Professional qualifications General skills/experience Membership of appropriate professional body or learned society University Teaching qualification or be willing to work towards this qualification Specific knowledge and skills Experience in Crime Scene Investigation will be looked upon favourably. Ability to teach principles and apply practical demonstrations to CSI. Must be knowledgeable in Crime Scene Investigation.
