JOB PURPOSE: This post is funded by a grant from the Church of England to work with Dr Wayne Morris to develop two new programmes in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Chester: To design and validate two new programmes: o Church Colleges Certificate in Religious Literacy o Church Colleges Certificate in Church School Studies To design and prepare online learning materials for these two programmes. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to: Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate module delivery as agreed with the Head of Department. Be an active researcher in an area appropriate to the post and publish scholarly research in the field. To engage in administrative tasks appropriate to the post. 6. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Chester is a learning community of students and staff committed to excellence in the scholarly study of theology, biblical studies, ethics, philosophy and religious studies. The department attracts highly motivated students to its undergraduate programmes: BA Theology, BA Religious Studies and BA

2 Theology and Religious Studies. The department has five MA programmes; MA Theology, MA Practical and Contextual Theology, MA Religious Studies, MA Faiths and Public Policy and MA Theology, Media and Communication. In addition, the department has a thriving postgraduate research culture with some c.50 students working towards a Professional Doctorate in Practical Theology and c.30 students working towards a PhD in a range of subject areas. The Department is committed to student-centred learning and seek to foster a learning community which is inclusive, open, friendly and accessible. We have respect for diverse religious and cultural perspectives of students and colleagues, and for their relation to research, teaching and the student experience. We are dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. This includes a commitment to creative teaching and we offer modules and programmes of study which are relevant and inspiring to students. We engage a range of learning styles and seek to motivate students to take ownership of their learning. We are also committed to research-informed teaching and so develop modules and programmes which reflect and communicate the research interests of staff. The Department was rated excellent for teaching quality in the last national audit, and in a recent national student satisfaction survey the Department s scores were among the very best in the UK. This is matched by a commitment to excellence in research in Theology, Ethics, Religious Studies and Biblical Studies relevant to contemporary culture and faithcommunities. Staff members publish research which is rated of international excellence and which is of value to the student community and often also of value to regional, national and international faith communities and beyond; we participate in national and international conferences and have made many successful bids for research funding, which can extend the opportunities for research leave offered through a regular rota. Our commitment to excellence in research includes a dedication to the effective supervision of postgraduate research and to recruiting students from diverse contexts who are able to profit from and contribute to, research in our disciplines. We seek to foster a welldeveloped research culture through provision of research seminars and encourage the sharing of ideas between staff, and between staff and students. We have two interdisciplinary research centres further supporting parts of the research community here: a Centre for Religion and the Biosciences, and a Centre for Faiths and Public Policy. The Department works with a range of collaborative partnerships, supporting the accreditation of programmes from undergraduate to doctoral level. The Department now accredits over 50 programmes in 14 partner colleges and institutions representing c.1,000 students. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to this vibrant learning community, bringing expertise in teaching and research to the team in an aspect of Theology and/or Religious Studies. The candidate will also be an excellent administrator and be willing to support and contribute to the department s work with collaborative partnerships.

3 7. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 7.1 Communication To facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials and seminars at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To produce high quality teaching and learning materials, including on-line learning materials to support and develop student learning at undergraduate level and, occasionally, at postgraduate level, as required. To write and publish research in a recognised aspect of theology and/or religious studies. To contribute to the writing of course validation documents as required. 7.2 Teamwork and Motivation To act as module leader as required. To collaborate with academic colleagues on course development and curriculum changes. To contribute to the Department s vibrant research culture. 7.3 Liaison and Networking To build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration. To be an active member of relevant departmental committees. To build research networks through, for example, membership of learned societies. 7.4 Service delivery To enhance the quality of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery by obtaining and analysing peer observation feedback, student feedback, and external examiner feedback to maintain high quality learning and teaching. To publish research in any aspect of theology and/or religious studies. To perform a range of administrative tasks relevant to the post. 7.5 Decision making In the context of the role-holder s teaching duties, to make independent decisions on the content of individual learning activities and marking for student assessment purposes, and to provide advice to colleagues on such matters. To sit on student selection panels as required. To make collaborative decisions with programme teams on the content of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To provide advice on issues to other members of the department to influence operational decisions within the immediate work area.

4 7.6 Planning and Organising Resources To act as module leader as required. To contribute to programme organisation. To plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with the Head/Deputy Head of Department. To be an excellent time-keeper and to take responsibility for managing and organising a range of tasks in the candidate s own teaching, research and administration. 7.7 Initiative and Problem Solving To deal with problems e.g. students academic progress and personal issues (e.g. responding to needs of students with learning difficulties through referral to the appropriate support departments within the University). 7.8 Analysis and Research To research teaching materials and to identify and utilise current best practice in the relevant subject area. To conduct subject specific research in any aspect of theology and/or religious studies. To contribute to Departmental research seminars. 7.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Standard office environment and equipment reflecting the needs of classroom, laboratory, studio, field and placement activities as appropriate Work environment To be responsible for the Health and Safety of students in their immediate working environment, reporting any Health and Safety concerns to the Head of Department Pastoral Care and Welfare To deal with sensitive issues concerning students and provide support. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) Team Development To undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues as required Teaching and Learning Support To design inductions to modules and programmes for students, adapting delivery to suit learners needs, in particular on the CCC Religious Literacy and the CCC Church Schools Studies. To design and deliver lectures or workshops in the department s undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.

5 To develop and design course content and materials, ensuring compliance with the quality standards and regulations of the University and Department. Develop and research own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance and ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials meet defined learning objectives. To conduct seminars and tutorials, introducing new methods of delivery where required. To assess students overall performance, through setting/ marking programme work, practical sessions, supervisions, fieldwork and examinations, providing appropriate feedback to students. To challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems. APPLICATION PROCESS AND SELECTION PROCEDURE Shortlisting will be completed on the basis of applications made using the University s application form and appropriate accompanying materials. s should be submitted to HRMS by 26 th April Candidates will be asked to make a presentation to an audience of students and academic staff on the topic an aspect of their research aimed at first year undergraduate audience. The presentation should last for 15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions.

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: Lecturer in Christian Studies, Department: Theology and Religious Studies Criteria Qualifications: Good first degree in theology and/or religious studies Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g.hea) or willingness to achieve this within a specified period The candidate should hold or be near completion of a PhD, Professional Doctorate or equivalent qualification in theology and/or religious studies or related discipline Proven Experience: Teaching experience in an aspect of Church Schools Studies and/or Religious Literacy. Record of academic publishing in an aspect of theology and/or religious studies and/or an ability to articulate clearly defined research trajectories. 8 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT LECTURER IN THEOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES 12 MONTH FIXED TERM CONTRACT FROM SEPTEMBER FTE SALARY SCALE University Scale TSR3, points 31 34, 31,331-34,223 per annum, pro rata CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Those candidates who do not possess postgraduate teaching qualification/higher Education Academy membership will be expected to work towards these qualifications. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 17.5 days per annum pro rata (and pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. CRB CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo an enhanced CRB check before an appointment can be made. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an occupational health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University is an admitted body to the Teachers Pension Scheme.
