1 FCS The Hspitalized Child 4611/5611 Spring 2013 Mnday Evenings 6:00pm-8:45pm Appalachian State University Instructrs: Pamela Nrcrss, MS, CCLS and Dr. Ellen Carpenter Curse Descriptin: Children underging hspitalizatin and medical treatment have unique develpmental, emtinal, scial and educatinal needs. This curse is designed t help students understand the prcedures, illnesses, and stress that are experienced by children and their families during hspitalizatin. This curse will stress bth thery and practice in wrking with children and families fr prfessinals in nn-medical areas, and examine hw illness can impact children s develpment. Required readings will be psted weekly. Curse Objectives: Students will: Learn abut the different nn-medical prfessinals wh wrk with children and their families during a hspitalized stay such as Child Life Specialists, Scial Wrkers, Dietitians, Physical Therapists, Occupatinal Therapists, etc. Gain an understanding the wrkings f the interdisciplinary team apprach in hspitals (Service f Care) Gain an understanding hw strength-based assessment can help children and families in crisis. Examine the unique needs f children in health care settings and discuss hw develpmental thery infrms practice and interventin fr these children and their families. Learn abut the medical prblems that impact children wh must be hspitalized. Demnstrate knwledge f medical terminlgy used in treating hspitalized children. Learn abut different therapies used t help children when in stressful situatins such as art therapy, play therapy, and music therapy. Learn abut different medical prcedures and design ways t explain these prcedures t children. Discuss prfessinal issues and standards established by the Child Life Cuncil. Present a interdisciplinary presentatin abut medical cnditin. Only ne graduate student per team. Attendance: Class meets n Mnday, 6:00pm-8:45pm. Class attendance is mandatry and will be taken each week. All students are required t attend class and t be prepared t discuss all reading assignments. One absence is permitted. Beynd ne absence, 15 pints will be taken frm yur final grade per absence. Pints will als be deducted if yu miss half f the class. Tw half classes equals ne full absence! 2. Exams: Exams/Case studies Midterm Exam (see calendar) Final Exam: Last day f class *Bth exams will be take hme exams and will be typed* There will be tw exams, the dates fr which are n the curse utline. These will be essay exams and require the integratin and synthesis f develpmental and theretical knwledge and applicatin t practice. Students will be given case studies with the exam and scenaris fr which interventin plans will be develped and discussed. Exam Plicy: Midterm and final exams may be made up nly with an apprpriate excuse. Make up exams will be scheduled with the instructr. 3. Reflective Cmments: Fllwing each class and befre 6 pm n Friday befre the next week s class, the student is t the prfessr and pssibly the guest speaker abut their thughts cncerning the material presented, class discussin, readings, and reflective insight t the material. 10 pints each! Only 5 pints credit if late.

3 4. Team Prject: Interdisciplinary Presentatin- Students will be assigned t a team at the brining f the semester. Students will select a medical diagnsis t investigate and present infrmatin abut the develpmental implicatins f the medical cnditin t the class, and develp a therapeutic plan that culd be implemented. Mre specific guidelines fr this will be discussed in class. Graduate Students shuld select a bk that is challenging and related t yur majr if pssible. A 10-minute presentatin n the bk in class. Infrmatin fr the Bk Reprts will be psted and prvided in class; must be typed. 6. In Class Assignments: Thrughut the semester, assigned grups will gather and discuss varius prvided tpics. Infrmatin gathered will either be turned in thrugh ral presentatins r turned in written frm. 7. Dll Prject: The class will have a demnstratin f hw t make the dll fr children t have in the hspital. This dll prject is ne that we d each year t prvide dlls fr the children at the Watauga Medical Center Emergency Rm. The dlls will be due the evening f ur final exam, and we will make a grup picture f everyne and their dll. If yu want t yu can make extra dlls fr the children fr sme extra credit. Check with the instructr. 8. Hspital Tur: The class will tur Watauga Medical Center. Students are asked t dress and act in a prfessinal manner thrughut the tur. Attendance is mandatry. Students will need t reflect n hspital envirnment in the weekly reflectins.
