The aim of this study was to compare anorectic behaviours of female students from secondary sports and comprehensive schools in Poznań taking into account their level of anorexia readiness syndrome (ARS). Material and methods. Questionnaires on ARS, socio-demographic characteristics and sports ex - perience were filled in by 195 female third-grade students who attended secondary schools in Poznań, including 71 sports school students and 124 comprehensive school students. Students from sports schools practised team sports. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the SPSS 12.0 PL for Windows computer programme Results. The variable type of school-ars level had statistically significant impact on answers to twenty one questions, including nineteen out of twenty questions connected with anorectic behaviours and two questions concerning socio-demographic characteristics and sports experience of the studied girls. In comprehensive schools a higher percentage of female students showing low ARS level was observed whereas in sports schools a higher percentage of students showing medium and high ARS level was observed. In both types of school the higher the ARS level, the higher percentage of girls showing anorectic behaviours was observed. Conclusions. A higher percentage of girls showing high ARS level was observed among sports school students in comparison to comprehensive school students although the former ones did not practise either weight dependent or aesthetic disciplines. The fact that the higher the ARS level, the higher percentage of unfavourable anorectic behaviours was observed shows the need to introduce as soon as possible the proposition of the National Programme for Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders which we pro - posed in our previous article. Practical knowledge of human nutrition, aimed at the ability to plan a balanced diet, should be incorporated in the school curricula. School psychologists should involve more actively in the educational process, especially in terms of perceiving one s own attractiveness by female students. This eating disorder is chara - cterised by choosing self-destructive behaviours as a way of solving problems and by severe restriction of food intake along with taking strenuous exercise. Numerous factors contribute to the onset of this disorder [1,2,3]. Mortality from anorexia nervosa amounts to 18% and is the highest among all mental diseases [1,4,5]. In order to combat this mental dise - ase, the National Programme for Prevention and Treat - ment of Eating Disorders has been proposed [2]. A good way to identify persons at risk of anorexia nervosa is to check their anorexia readiness syn - drome (ARS) [6]. ARS is a set of symptoms which imply abnormalities in eating behaviours and attitude towards one s own body. In Poland, studies on ARS were carried out in 408 female secondary school and university students [6], 72 females who practised judo [7] and 92 female dancers [8]. The aim of this study was to compare anorectic behaviours of female students from secondary sports and comprehensive schools in Poznań. Material and methods To study ARS, a method worked out by Ziółkow - ska [6,9] was used. It was described in detail in our previous article [7]. Questionnaires on ARS, sociodemographic characteristics and sports experience were filled in by 195 female third-grade students who attended secondary schools in Poznań, including 71 sports school students and 124 comprehensive school students. Students from sports schools practised team sports. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the SPSS 12.0 PL for Windows computer programme. The study was approved by the Bioethics Com - mittee of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. Results Characteristics of the studied population Tab. 1 shows characteristics of the studied female students according to the variable type of school-ars level. This variable had statistically significant impact only on the number of training hours per week and on sports achievements. Sports school students spent more hours training during the week and a higher percentage of them declared having sports achievements. Among girls showing high ARS level, those from sports schools spent more than three hours training during the week, while those from comprehensive schools train - ed for either less than three hours or three to six hours per week. Irrespective of ARS level, three times more students from sports schools declared having sports achievements compared to those from comprehensive schools. Although the variable type of school-ars level had no statistically significant impact on the remain - ing answers, it is important to point to the fact that among sports school students showing high ARS level 62.5% of mothers and 50% of fathers were of secondary education and among comprehensive 369

In girls of high ARS level, comprehensive school students had more siblings than their peers from sports schools. Moreover, a higher percentage of them, irrespective of the type of school, was the second child in the family. All of the sports school students showing high ARS level trained for more than one year while those from comprehensive schools trained for either less than one year or for one to three years. Methods of controlling and reducing body weight Tab. 2 shows the studied students answers to the questions concerning methods of controlling and reducing body weight according to the variable type of school-ars level. This variable had statistically sig - nificant impact on the answers to all of the questions. In both types of school percentage of affirmative answers to those questions was the lowest in students of low ARS level and the highest in students of high ARS level. The highest percentage of affirmative answers to question number four concerning doing strenuous exercise and experimenting with advertised sports equipment was observed in girls showing high ARS level but higher percentage of affirmative answers was observed in sports school students. Attitude towards eating Tab. 3 shows the studied students answers to the questions concerning their attitude towards eating ac cording to the variable type of school-ars level. Parenting style Tab. 4 shows the studied students answers to the questions concerning parenting style in their families according to the variable type of school-ars level. This variable had statistically significant impact on two out of three questions, i.e. do I like being the best in many areas of life (school, sport, beauty etc.)? and Tab. 4. In both types of school the percentage of affirmative answers to those questions was the lowest in students of low ARS level and the highest in students of high ARS level. Comprehensive school students of high ARS level gave the highest percentage of affirmative answers to both of these questions. Despite no statistically significant impact on the first question, concerning being criticised, admo nish - ed and controlled by parents, it is important to high - light that irrespective of ARS level the percentage of affirmative answers was the lowest in students showing low ARS level and the highest in students showing high ARS level. Once again, irrespective of the type of school, the percentage of affirmative an - swers to those questions was the lowest in students of low ARS level and the highest in students of high ARS level. It is noteworthy that all students showing high ARS level, irrespective of the type of school, agreed with the statements that physical appearance is of great importance in achieving success in life and that men prefer slim women. All sports school students of high ARS level took great care of their appearance and would improve it if it was possible. To only two questions out of nine more affirmative answers, among girls showing high ARS level, were given by comprehensive school students compared to sports school students. These questions were comparing oneself to models and attractive actresses and controlling body weight and body sizes. The highest percentage of affirmative answers to the remaining questions was observed in sports school students of high ARS level. Discussion Percentage of students, from both sports and comprehensive schools, showing high ARS level was lower than in a study by Ziółkowska [6] carried out in a group of 408 female secondary school and univer - sity students but higher than in our study on 72 fe - males who practised judo [7]. Percentage of students, from both types of school, showing medium ARS level was higher than in a study by Ziółkowska [6]. Per - centage of sports school students of medium ARS level was slightly higher than in female judo athletes [7], 67.6% vs. 65.3%. The lowest percentage of female students showing low ARS level, 19.7%, was observed in the studied population of sports school students and the highest, 34.7%, in the studied com - prehensive school students. Our results show an increased risk of anorectic be - ha viours among female students from sports schools although they practised team sports. So far, it is em - phasised in the literature [10,11,12] that anorexia is the most prevalent in athletes of weight dependent disci - plines, such as tae kwon do, judo, karate, wrestling or rowing, or in athletes of aesthetic disciplines, such as figure skating, rhythmic gymnastics, diving, synchro - nised swimming or dancing. The differences in anorectic behaviours among female students of high ARS level from both types of school were characterised by higher percentage of comprehensive school students who applied various methods of controlling and reducing body weight and higher percentage of sports school students who gave more affirmative answers to questions concerning perceiving their own attractiveness. Decreased interest in various methods of controll - ing and reducing body weight among sports school students is most probably due to the fact that they did not need to maintain their body weight within an ap - propriate range, unlike judo athletes in which this interest was strong [7]. In students from both types of school, behaviours connected with methods of controlling and reducing body weight, attitude towards eating, parenting style and perceiving their own attractiveness were more prevalent in students with higher ARS level and this tendency was even stronger than in our previous study in a group of female judo athletes [7]. This shows con - siderable risk of anorexia in the studied students of high ARS level as such persons and those who already suffer from anorexia are characterised by practising various methods of drastic control of body weight [1], inappropriate attitude towards eating in the family home [1,14,15], feeling unaccepted by parents and being constantly criticised and controlled by them [1,16,17] and misperceiving their own attractiveness [1,18,19]. Moreover, we observed a very disconcerting fact which was a higher percentage of comprehensive school students of high ARS level who took purgative, 72.7%, in comparison with girls suffering from anorexia in the United States, more than 50% [20], Australia, 12% [21], and Great Britain, 26.4% [22]. In order to reduce the risk of anorexia in the studied population of female students it is essential to introduce as soon as possible the National Programme for Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders which we proposed in our previous article [2]. Parents should reduce criticism and ease control of their daughters, show them acceptance and help in solving their eve - ryday problems. School psychologists should involve more actively in the educational process, especially in terms of perceiving their own attractiveness by female students. Practical knowledge of human nutrition, aimed at the ability to plan a balanced diet, should be in - corporated in the school curricula. Conclusions 1. A higher percentage of girls showing high or me - dium ARS level was observed among sports school students in comparison to comprehensive school students. 2.
