JOB DESCRIPTION JOB GRADE: Management and Specialist Grade 8 REPORTS TO RESPONSIBLE TO Deputy Director of Human Resources Director of Human Resources 1. Job Purpose: a) To manage the day to day operational aspects of the HR Department (excluding the Payroll/Pensions, Workforce Information, Staff Development and Occupational Health Sections) b) To work closely with the Vice Chancellor, DVC, PVCs, Executive Directors, Deans and Heads of Departments etc, by providing specialist HR advice and support. c) To support the Director of HR in the formulation of the University s HR strategy and the delivery of associated University wide initiatives/projects. 2. Job Duties: a) Manage the work of HR Advisers and HR Officers, ensuring best practice and delivery against quality standards and KPIs and providing specialist advice as required. b) Provide strategic advice on HRM and OD issues to senior managers and Heads of Departments/Sections. c) Delegate and apportion workload effectively, within the HR team, to ensure achievement of organisational objectives.

2 d) Manage HR operational budgets, within agreed parameters. e) Act as member of the Department s senior management team, maximising the benefits of joint working with other sections, ie Staff Development, Workforce Information and Occupational Health. f) Contribute to the further development and review of the University s HR strategy, ensuring that objectives are successfully progressed, regularly monitored and reported upon. g) Support Senior Executive Managers, Heads of Departments/Sections and other line managers in developing and undertaking change management programmes. h) Provide specialist advice to Heads of Departments/Sections and others on a range of complex issues, often of a confidential and highly sensitive nature, e.g. employment legislation, matters relating to conditions of service and HR procedures. i) Support managers in the investigation and processing of disciplinary, capability and grievance cases, including, where appropriate, presentation of management cases. j) Contribute to recruitment promotion and reward processes, in particular those relating to senior staff and develop procedures in accordance with statutory requirements and best practice. k) Manage the academic and academic related staff probation processes, providing advice to Heads of Departments/Sections, probationers and probationary advisers, as well as to the Academic and Academic Related Staff Probation Monitoring Group, in particular in the handling of problematic cases. m) Liaise and negotiate with trade union representatives, in connection with individual and collective employment issues, ensuring that the DHR is kept fully apprised of developments and employee relations issues. n) Act as Project Manager, or team leader, as determined by the Director of Human Resources, for allocated University wide projects and initiatives. o) Act as Secretary to University committees, as determined by the Director of Human Resources. p) Draft and develop policy, strategy and procedures, for the University, on a range of non-standard issues, focusing on employment law practices. q) Represent the Human Resources Department internally and externally as appropriate as required.

3 r) In conjunction with Staff Development, assist in the development of training courses, as appropriate and deliver these to a range of staff, including senior management. s) Foster the development and implementation of equality and diversity initiatives. t) Undertake any other tasks as may be reasonably be required by the Director of Human Resources. 3. Special Conditions/Points to Note: a) All duties must be carried out in a manner that supports the University s commitment to equality and diversity. b) The post holder may be required to work outside of normal office hours if necessitated by the exigencies of the service. c) The purpose of this job description is to indicate the general level of duties and responsibility of the post. The detailed duties may vary from time to time without changing the general character or level of responsibility entailed. d) All duties must be carried out in accordance with relevant Health and Safety legislation and University policies/procedures. 4. Other: All staff have a statutory responsibility to take reasonable care of themselves, others and the environment and to prevent harm by their acts or omissions. All staff are therefore required to adhere to the University s Health, Safety and Environmental Policy & Procedures. All staff should hold a duty and commitment to observing the University s Equality & Diversity policy and procedures at all times. Duties must be carried out in accordance with relevant Equality & Diversity legislation and University policies/procedures.

4 DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES PERSON SPECIFICATION JOB TITLE: Assistant Director (Human Resources) JOB GRADE: Management and Specialist Grade 8 Experience and Training Essential Desirable Stage to be assessed Substantial Experience of experience, at a working in a supervisory level, Human Resources within a Human department in Resources higher education department Significant experience of advising managers on complex HR issues, particularly: employment law; organisational change; formal disciplinary and grievance meetings and managing sickness absence Up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of employment legislation Experience of leading organisation-wide projects Experience of leading negotiations with trade unions

5 Skills and Abilities Evidence of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Experience of managing a team Ability to work independently, under pressure and on own initiative Good attention to detail Excellent organisational skills Flexible approach Ability to prioritise tasks and work under pressure to meet deadlines Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal Excellent negotiation skills Excellent report writing skills Tact and diplomacy 1,2 Appreciation of the importance of confidentiality Competent in Microsoft applications: Word; Powerpoint Excel Outlook Experience with HR Systems ideally I- Trent (Midland) 3

6 Qualifications Chartered Membership of CIPD Educated to degree level standard, or equivalent Chartered Fellow of CIPD Degree level qualification in HR related subject All to be assessed at stage 1 Other Commitment to observing the University s Equality & Diversity policy at all times Management or HR related qualification at Master s level 1 3 Stages in Assessment: 1, Application Form; 2, Selection Test; 3, Interview Conditions of Service The position is full-time, open-ended appointment. The starting salary for the post will be on will be on Management & Specialist Grade 8, 48,743 to 54,841 per annum at a starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
