1 Welcome to the 5th Australia and New Zealand Home Dialysis Conference in Melbourne On behalf of the local organising committee, I would like to welcome you to the fifth Australia and New Zealand Home Dialysis Conference to be held from 5 th to 7 th March, 2014 in Melbourne, Victoria. This conference has evolved to recognise the need to discuss and learn about innovative ways to help people achieve home based dialysis therapies. The theme of the conference is "My Kidneys, My Home, My Choice", emphasising the need to involve the patient in the discussions and decisions around home dialysis. We have three invited overseas speakers, Dr Andrew Davenport from University College London, who has been involved in the development of the WAK (wearable artificial kidney). Dr Richard Fluck, also from the UK (Derby), who has been instrumental in establishing a large home HD program, is President of the British Renal Society and is assuming a role as National Clinical Director for Renal Disease. Finally Prof Ana Figueiredo is an extremely well-credentialed PD nurse from Brazil who has extensive experience in all aspects of peritoneal dialysis. In addition, we have a large faculty of local speakers drawn from all facets of home dialysis, all with significant expertise. Professor Peter G Kerr The home dialysis conference has put together a program which should interest medical, nursing, allied health care workers, consumers, carers and technical staff involved in home dialysis therapies. The local organising committee draws on the extensive experience and expertise of the home dialysis community in Victoria and other states and have worked hard to ensure a high quality meeting. I would also like to personally thank the Haemodialysis Advisory Committee (HDAC) which has been integral in setting up the conference and whose support has maintained the success of these conferences. The meeting is being held at the Pullman Hotel (formerly known as the Sebel) in Albert Park just south of the central business district of Melbourne right opposite the Formula 1 Grand Prix track. The conference venue offers 3 levels of accommodation and is the perfect choice for your stay, although other options exist in the surrounds. An engaging social program has also been designed to allow you to network with the home dialysis community. Oral presentation will consist of a 7 minutes presentation with 3 minutes of questions - 10 minutes total each. Instructions for Abstract Submission Abstracts to be written in English and should not contain figures (pictures, tables, charts). Abstracts must not contain data already published. Abstracts must not exceed 250 words, excluding title, authors and institutions. Font must be Times New Roman font 12 with single line spacing. Abstracts submitted must be relevant to Home Dialysis. He was appointed a British Heart Foundation fellow whilst exploring the link between cardiovascular disease, calcium signalling and abnormalities of calcium metabolism in chronic kidney disease. He returned to the Royal London Hospital as Lecturer and honorary Senior Registrar in Nephrology. In 1996 he took up post at Derby City Hospital as a single handed nephrologist. Over the next decade, the department expanded and developed a strong clinical research and safety programme. As a whole, the department has interests in cardiovascular consequences of CKD and dialysis, infection and vascular access. As part of the team, he is involved in the coordination of two cohort studies looking at chronic kidney disease in primary care (RRID) and the short and long term consequences of acute kidney injury (ARID). More recent projects include the development of PROMs for renal patients and developing home therapies for patients on dialysis. Within the acute trust he has been clinical lead for renal disease for 15 years and clinical director for medicine. He has been the clinical lead for the East Midlands Renal Network and worked with the DH and HPA on infection in renal disease. He was also the clinical lead for the KidneyCare National audit on vascular access and transport in the haemodialysis population. In April 2013 he was appointed as National Clinical Director (renal) to the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS England). He is currently President of the British Renal Society and chair of the Kidney Alliance. He sits on the UK Renal Registry Board, is the UK country co-investigator for the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) and is on the editorial board of Nephron. In 2007, he led the renal team at Derby that won the Renal Team of the year award, given by Hospital Doctor and the following year received the Health and Social care award for safety in patient care.
