6 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Thursday 9.00 am Raj Behal Stanford University Hospital The Journey to a High-Performance Organisation Raj Behal MD, MPH, is the chief quality officer and associate dean for quality at Stanford Stanford's quality and patient safety strategies are 1) broad-based engagement and collaboration; 2) managing complexity of care and reducing variations in care; and 3) scholarship in care improvement so we can learn, innovate and set new standards. These strategies are geared toward enhancing patient-centered, safe, clinically effective care patient safety is always the first priority Over a decade ago Raj started developing risk adjustment models for measuring in-hospital mortality. He quickly realized that data was necessary for improvement, but not sufficient alone. Without physician engagement and thoughtful change management, there could not be sustained improvement. At Stanford current strategies are to work with the physician leaders of clinical programs and multidisciplinary teams to examine quality and cost outcomes side by side, examine variations and use clinical effectiveness methods to improve quality while lowering costs. Stanford is also developing next-generation smart clinical pathways that standardize medical assessment, anticipate risk and build in both mitigation of and rescue from potential complications. Much of this work requires integrated clinical and financial data, advanced analytic methods and tools. At Stanford the goal is to achieve pre-eminence in clinical quality, safety and efficiency. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Thursday 4.00 pm Stephen Simpson-The Charles Perkins Centre An Innovative approach to chronic disease and the story of ageing Stephen J. Simpson AC, FAA, FRS is Academic Director (CEO) of the Charles Perkins Centre, a $500 million University of Sydney initiative which engages all 16 faculties of the University as well as partners in health, government, community, national and international agencies. Stephen is also Executive Director of Obesity Australia and holds numerous other public and professional roles. He spent 22 years at the University of Oxford, first in Experimental Psychology, then in the Department of Zoology and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, before returning to Australia in In 2007 Stephen was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, in 2008 he won the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research and in 2009 was NSW Scientist of the Year. In 2013 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London as one of the world s foremost entomologists and nutritional biologists, and in 2015 was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to biological and biomedical science as an educator, researcher and author. His particular achievements are in human nutrition, obesity and metabolic disease, higher education, and for roles with a range of professional scientific organisations.
