1 The World Alliance for Arts Education Global Summit 2014: Transform: From Inception to Innovation in Arts Education November 2014 Griffith University School of Education and Professional Studies Mt Gravatt Campus, Brisbane, Australia Call for Abstracts It is with great pleasure that we, the organising committee, invite you to attend the World Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE) Global Summit 2014 which will be held at Griffith avatt Campus, Brisbane, Australia from Wednesday the 26 th to Friday the 28 th November, Summit Theme: The theme of the WAAE Global Summit is Transform: From Inception to Innovation in Arts Education. This summit will focus on traditional, indigenous and contemporary innovations in arts education practice across the globe. As arts educators we have an obligation to support and maintain indigenous traditions as well as push boundaries in creating new and contemporary practice. The summit will connect arts educators, practitioners and researchers with the aim of forging new partnerships. Our special Keynote speaker for this event will be Professor Emeritus Tom Barone. The summit aims to promote a positive approach to sustaining and continuing arts education. The focus of the summit includes: Supporting and maintaining indigenous arts practice (both traditional and contemporary) Embracing innovation in arts education Developing global partnerships through arts education Continuing the important work of the WAAE through research, networking and advocacy. The WAAE summit usually targets approximately 120 arts educators of international standing across the globe.

2 Call for Abstracts: This WAAE Global Summit combines the requirements of an academic conference with the needs for WAAE strategic planning and working groups. The four world member associations: International Drama/Theatre and Education Association (IDEA); International Society of Education through Art (InSEA); International Society for Music Education (ISME), and the World Dance Alliance (WDA) of the WAAE will each call for academic paper presentations from In respecting the equity and diversity philosophies driving the WAAE, the conference seeks representation from all of the member organisations and those working in arts education beyond these organisations. Arts educators from the Asia- Pacific region are especially welcome, and as such, Griffith University and the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) Arts Education Practice and Research (AEPR) SIG, will draw upon their networks, encouraging other regional experts to the Summit. With approximately 120 delegates in total as well as members of the public participating as audience members for the keynote presentations, the Summit maintains a focus and intensity that distinguishes this type of WAAE Global Summit. In respect to the dual (academic and strategic working party) purposes of the Summit, speakers will be selected based on the following: acceptance of their word academic abstract for presentation at the Summit; current involvement in an arts education organization committee/organizational activity and willingness to maintain this involvement in 2015; willingness to contribute to WAAE working groups/projects on Advocacy, Research, Networking; and Engagement with specific and diverse communities. We understand that these criteria go beyond the normal requirements of an academic conference. However, the WAAE Global Summits always maintain this dual focus as we seek to establish project and policy infrastructures. For your presentation to be considered you will be required to submit the following: 1. A 500 word abstract for your presentation; 2. A 150 word statement on your current involvement in arts education; 3. A 100 word biography. You are invited to take part in this exciting international event by submitting the above requirements by Friday 18 th July 2014 to Dr Georgina Barton g.barton@griffith.edu.au. Participation in this summit is by invitation only. Each paper presentation will be limited to minutes (10 ppt slides) with a chaired discussion. If you are successful you will be part of approximately 90 presentations from quality arts educators across the globe in dance, drama, media arts, music, visual arts and cross- arts education. We invite you to share your research evidence, innovations and best practices in arts education globally. 6 Confirmed Keynote Presenters Professor Emeritus Tom Barone Thomas (Tom) Barone is Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University Teachers College in Tempe, AZ. Barone received his doctorate in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education from Stanford University in the late 1970s. He taught courses in curriculum studies and qualitative research methods (including narrative and arts based research) for over two decades at ASU before his retirement in Barone is the author and editor of several books, including Arts Based Research (2012), co- authored with Elliot Eisner. Barone is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of Division B (Curriculum Studies) of the American Education Research Association, and, in 2012, the first recipient of the Tom Barone Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Arts Based Educational Research by the ABR Special Interest Group of AERA. Tom currently resides in his beloved home town of New Orleans, Louisiana.
