1 RESIDENT ADVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION Jb Respnsibilities Resident Advisrs (RA) are an imprtant part f Bradley University's residence hall staff. RAs are paraprfessinal students wh are accuntable t their Hall Directr(s) and the Directr f Residential Living. RAs prvide an essential liaisn rle between the University Husing and the residents. They share a large part f the daily respnsibility fr the peratin f the residence halls. The RA psitin, by its very nature, requires an individual wh is acutely sensitive t the needs f students; can be flexible regarding time demands; is willing and able t relate t a wide variety f individuals; is knwledgeable abut supprt services available t students; can perfrm essential administrative tasks; is sensitive t diversity in lifestyles; and has a genuine desire t be f service t thers. The RA must have a knwledge and appreciatin fr the varius stresses placed upn the individual student in the academic cmmunity envirnment, as well as an understanding f each resident s respnsibility t the welfare f the cmmunity. Administrative Prepare flr reprts as directed by the Residence Directr. Be thrughly familiar with the Staff Manual, University Student Handbk, and ther Husing and University publicatins. Sit a predetermined number f ffice hurs, nt t exceed 5 hurs per week. Assist with check-in prcess, including preparing bulletin bards, dr decratins, keys, and ther infrmatin fr check-in and being present and active thrughut the prcess. Assist with check-ut, including remaining n flr beynd the cnclusin f final exams, Thanksgiving Break, and Spring Break. Meet residence hall, area, and departmental deadlines. Inspect flr public areas weekly and cmplete maintenance requests fr repairs and/r upkeep n an nging basis. Participate in all training, staff meetings and prfessinal develpment as directed by supervisr r department. Be respnsible fr all keys/equipment issued t yu by University Husing. Cmmunicate with the Hall Directrs cncerning all aspects f the psitin and all develpments in the RA's area f respnsibility.
2 Cmmunicate all husekeeping and maintenance prblems, and t fllw up t see that they are crrected. Assist in the staff selectin prcess by writing prfessinal applicant evaluatins. Perfrm ther duties as assigned. Advising/Cunseling Advise individual residents in persnal, scial, and academic matters. Make necessary and apprpriate referrals. Mediate in rm cnflicts. Intervene in crisis situatins as needed. Help students becme aware f the University's expectatins f them as expressed in the student handbk and the University Standards f Cnduct. Encurage students t deal with prblem situatins n a peer level. Respnd t unacceptable behavir whenever and wherever the RA becmes aware f it. Cmmunicatin Serve as a liaisn between University Husing and yur residents. Maintain cnsistency with yur Hall Directrs and staff partner. Cmmunity Develpment Be visible and available t residents n a regular basis. Visit their rms n a regular basis. By example and influence, encurage respnsible study habits and class attendance amng residents. Supprt established rules and regulatins including thse with which yu may persnally disagree. Serve as a cmmunicatin link between the students and University Husing. Lead by example and influence, prmte and encurage respnsible behavir amng residents bth n and ff campus. Recgnize the varius backgrunds, experiences, and values present n the flr and/in the residence hall/cmplex and plan cmmunitybuilding activities that help residents understand and accept each ther. Prmte inclusin. Use rmmate agreements t facilitate discussin and reduce cnflicts. Prmte and plan regular prgrams that meet student's scial and develpmental needs. RAs are required t implement regular prgramming, thugh specific requirements vary with Cmmunity
3 Directr expectatins and residence hall flr needs. Be inclusive, students may never again have pprtunity t participate in a cmmunity with the variety f peple wh live n the flr and in the hall. Adhere t the prvisins in this jb descriptin Adhere t the staff alchl plicy Cmplete incident reprts within 24 hurs fllwing the incident. Cperate with and supprt ther staff members. On-Duty Respnsibilities Serve a predetermined number f weekday cverage nights, nt t exceed 15 nights per semester. Serve a predetermined number f weekend cverages, nt t exceed 5 nights per semester. Adhere t cverage and weekend duty prcedures as utlined in the staff manual. Staff Invlvement/Supervisin Attend all staff meetings scheduled with yur hall directrs. Demnstrate cmmitment t the staff members in yur residence hall. Supprt RAs and staff when visiting ther buildings. Remember -- a RA is always a RA. Shw a willingness t grw and learn in the psitin. Cmply with any requests made by a Hall Directr r the Directr f Residential Living As an RA, assist in the develpment and training f yur ARA partner. Time Cmmitments Cnsult, in advance, with the Residential Living Office befre making any majr time cmmitments such as any remunerative psitins,
4 majr campus rganizatin invlvements, student teaching r c-p psitins, etc. RAs are expected t be available and visible n their flrs n a regular basis-abve and beynd their duty nights. In additin t a 1-2 week training just prir t the beginning f each semester, RAs are expected t participate in prfessinal develpment. Remuneratin Resident Advisrs receive rm and bard as cmpensatin. Assistant Resident Advisrs receive rm as cmpensatin. ARAs may be assigned a rmmate depending n the building and availability f single rms. Staff Ethics Residence Life staff members bear a sizable respnsibility fr the welfare f student residents. At the same time, they must maintain sund relatinships within the structure f the University and the University Husing. The ethical cnsideratins set frth belw are excellent behaviral guidelines fr the administratin f a student residence. Knw bth the rules and regulatins f the University and city and state statutes, which gvern the students f the University and, as an individual, cnduct yurself in accrdance with them. Carry ut t the fullest the respnsibilities, which yu assume as part f yur residence hall psitin. If ever yu becme negligent, negative, r apathetic tward yur respnsibilities yu risk ding a great disservice t the residents f the hall. Shuld such an attitude prblem arise, it is yur duty t see the Hall Directr IMMEDIATELY s yu can reslve the situatin. Always respect the privacy and prperty f thers. Never criticize University plicies r persnnel and services in frnt f residents. If yu are unhappy with specific individuals r plicies, there are apprpriate ways fr yu t express yur cmplaints and suggestins. Never criticize anther staff member in frnt f anyne, whether they are a staff member r nt. G directly t the persn(s) with whm yu have an issue and cmmunicate with each ther until the prblem is reslved. When necessary, ask anther staff member t facilitate the discussin knwing that nthing discussed amng the grup will be shared with anyne
5 utside the rm unless failure t d s cnstitutes a vilatin f the law. Disharmny amng staff members can have a negative impact n the effectiveness f University Husing. Never discuss a student's prblem r hall situatin with anther staff member unless the prblem directly affects that staff member. Never discuss a cnfidential matter in the presence f anther student. Be careful nt t be verheard when discussing cnfidential matters. Peridically yu will receive cnfidential material and infrmatin. Keep it cnfidential. Failure t keep infrmatin cnfidential can have a negative impact n the effectiveness f the Department and may affect yur status as an emplyee. Never allw yur judgment t be adversely affected by ethnic, racial bias, r prejudice twards thers. As a staff member, yur actins serve as an example t ther students. Always cnduct yurself in a mature, dignified manner. There is n better way t cmmand respect. Never respnd t a situatin when under the influence f drugs r alchl. Eligibility Requirements GPA Requirements Must maintain a cumulative GPA f 2.5 r abve (3.0 fr graduate students). This is knwn as the staff academic standard. If a staff member's cumulative GPA falls belw the staff academic standard, he/she will be placed n staff academic prbatin fr ne semester. If at the cmpletin f the prbatin semester, the cumulative GPA meets the staff academic standard, the prbatin will be remved and the staff member will be returned t gd standing. If at the cmpletin f the prbatin semester, the cumulative GPA des nt meets the staff academic standard, the staff member will be asked t take a leave f absence. When the staff member meets the staff academic standard, the staff member may be readmitted t staff upn the discretin f the Directr f Residential Living.
6 The Directr f Residential Living will take int cnsideratin the fllwing when a staff member reapplies' fr a staff psitin: A staff member's past jb perfrmance will be taken int cnsideratin. Current staff retentin and prmtin prjectins. Circumstances that might have been beynd a staff member's cntrl. Academic Lad Staff members are expected t be making reasnable prgress tward a degree. The academic lad fr undergraduate staff members shuld be n less than twelve semester hurs. The academic lad fr Graduate staff member shuld be n less than six semester hurs. Exceptins t this must be apprved in advance by the Center fr Residential Living and Leadership. Any additinal Graduate Assistantships and Practicums must be apprved in advance by the Center fr Residential Living and Leadership. Cnsult, in advance, with the Residential Living Office befre making any majr time cmmitments such as any remunerative psitins, majr campus rganizatin invlvements, student teaching r c-p psitins, etc. The Directr f Residential Living will take int cnsideratin the fllwing when a dismissed staff member reapplies fr a staff psitin: A staff member s past jb perfrmance will be taken int cnsideratin in regards t a staff member returning. 7 Being rehired fr staff depends upn availability f psitins and the jb perfrmance f the staff member when he/she tk leave f absence. Assistant Resident Advisr prmtins are based n perfrmance evaluatins and psitin availability.
