THE 2014 SHSMD EXECUTIVE DIALOGUE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIC ISSUES THE NEW WORLD OF HEALTH EXCHANGES Exchanges are creating a sea change in the way health insurance is sold and delivered in the US, both to consumers and employers. Gain insights on the impact of private and public exchanges for insurers and providers including considerations for participating in them, what can be learned from mature exchanges that have been operating in the Medicare space for years, and how exchanges are changing expectations and empowering consumers and employers alike. PHYSICIAN INTEGRATION Everyone is talking about aligning doctors for improved performance, but few have been successful managing the complexity involved in bringing together employed and private-practice physicians to achieve better quality, lower costs, and an environment of collaboration and accountability. 4 2014 SHSMD EXECUTIVE DIALOGUE SPEAKERS BRYCE WILLIAMS Managing Director, Exchange Solutions, Towers Watson Bryce Williams is managing director of Towers Watson s exchange solutions business segment. Towers Watson operates the nation s largest private Medicare health insurance exchange and offers exchange solutions for all workforce populations, including parttime and full-time employees and retirees. These solutions connect employer clients and customers to value with improved choice, expert advice in the decision-making process, and better control over their health benefits. Mr. Williams was CEO and founder of Extend Health before its acquisition by Towers Watson. He has also served as the senior vice president of marketing and business development at ehealth, Inc., director of development for OnCare, vice president and general counsel for Advance Paradigm, and corporate transactions attorney at Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue. In 2011, Mr. Williams was the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year for Northern California in the business services category. Under his leadership, Extend Health was ranked no. 94 on Inc. magazine s 2010 Inc. 500, a prestigious list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States. Mr. Williams received his law degree from The National Law Center at George Washington University and graduated from Baylor University. CURT THORNE President and Chief Executive Officer, MedSolutions Curt Thorne joined MedSolutions in 1998 and has led efforts by the company to deliver a diversified portfolio of medical cost management products and services that are designed to eliminate inconsistent care and waste, while improving patient outcomes and quality of life. He has responsibility for overall corporate strategy, operations, and business development. As the leader of 1,200 employees, he devotes his energies to attracting and retaining top talent to operate a growing enterprise, driving product and process innovation, and to building a culture that supports the ideals that underpin the company s commitment to reducing healthcare costs as a consequence of improving quality. Prior to joining MedSolutions, Mr. Thorne served as president and chief operating officer of a California-based specialty physician management company. He also served in senior management positions with Aetna Health plans, The Travelers, and Cigna. For each of these leading managed care companies, he led the development and operation of nationwide pharmacy benefit management companies, serving as general manager, chief operating officer, and president. Mr. Thorne earned his Master of Business Administration from the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest University and a bachelor s degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina. 4

5 SPEAKERS (continued) D. KEITH FERNANDEZ, MD President and Physician-in-Chief, MHMD Chief Medical Officer, Memorial Hermann ACO Dr. D. Keith Fernandez is president and physician-in-chief of MHMD, the Memorial Hermann Physician Network, and chief medical officer of the Memorial Hermann Accountable Care Organization. MHMD is one of the largest clinically integrated physician organizations in Texas, with more than 3,500 physician members throughout the greater Houston region. Dr. Fernandez has been a member of MHMD for 20 years and served as a director and chairman of the board immediately prior to his current role. He chairs the clinical programs committee, with 27 specialty and subspecialty committees that provide governance for quality, safety, and cost efficiency for MHMD and MHHS. Under his stewardship, the MHMD Compact was developed, which has successfully guided the daily interaction between management and physicians of his organization for the past five years. Over the last several years, the Advanced Primary Care Practices (patient centered medical homes) of MHMD have grown to 300 primary care physicians with embedded care managers, health coaches, and social workers and a clinic-based palliative care network. Ninety percent of the physicians in MHMD are in private practice. 5

6 2014 SHSMD EXECUTIVE DIALOGUE FACILITATOR BURL STAMP, FACHE Burl Stamp, FACHE, is a principal in the healthcare consulting group of Pershing Yoakley & Associates, where his practice focuses on strategy and performance improvement for hospitals, physician groups, and health systems. Mr. Stamp s expertise spans both strategic and operational disciplines within healthcare. As an experienced and sought-after facilitator, he has led dozens of strategy and operational improvement sessions for organizations ranging from physician practices to major academic medical centers, with participants ranging from boards of directors and physicians to frontline hospital staff. He draws from both backgrounds as a health system senior executive and as a seasoned consultant. Prior to launching his consulting practice, Mr. Stamp served several leading healthcare organizations in leadership roles. As president and CEO of Phoenix Children s Hospital, he led development and construction of Arizona s first comprehensive, freestanding healthcare campus dedicated to pediatrics. As an executive with St. Louis Children s Hospital and BJC HealthCare, he led pediatric clinical service line planning and development and started the highly successful Answer Line that provides reliable, accessible health advice to families. Mr. Stamp holds a Master of Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Southeast Missouri State University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Board of Directors member and frequent faculty member for the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development of the American Hospital Association, and the author of The Healing Art of Communication a healthcare professional s guide to improving communication with patients, families, physicians, and one another. 6

Because the SHSMD Executive Dialogue is designed to provide participants with extensive opportunities for discussion with speakers and peer-to-peer exchanges with colleagues, registration will be limited to 50 attendees. FEES SHSMD members enjoy a reduced rate of $1,150; the nonmember rate is $1,450. The rate for joining members is $1,350 and includes a one-year SHSMD membership at a discounted rate of $200, a $35 savings. Registration includes all meeting materials, one breakfast, one lunch, and one evening reception.
