2 Leadership transitions are critical events for every nonprofit, yet so few organizations have workable leadership transition plans in place. Ask yourself: Is our organization ready to meet a change of leadership head-on? This year, answer this question once and for all. This first-of-its-kind program represents a comprehensive, relevant tool for nonprofits to use in creating a meaningful response to leadership change. It combines in-depth succession planning, leadership change management, and emergency preparedness into a dynamic learning experience. While well-managed nonprofits adopt plans to deal with key organizational priorities program delivery, budget and finance, fundraising, board development research tells us that few have contingencies in place to address a change in leadership or implement a transition plan. Leadership transition planning is one of the most important issues facing nonprofits today. Attend this workshop, and your organization will have a tangible, renewable resource to address leadership transitions. In the corporate sector, management succession planning models have existed for many years. But due to issues of scope, scale and relevance, nonprofits find it difficult to apply corporate models. In addition, nonprofits typically lack the staffing depth and financial resources to make corporatetype succession planning possible. Based on research conducted by Kittleman, Seven Steps to Leadership Transition Planning is designed to specifically address the unique issues of nonprofit organizations. This workshop provides a universal tool, based on the concept of scenario planning, applicable to any nonprofit regardless of mission, scale or history.
3 This workshop is designed for a team of two: the organization s executive director and the current or incoming chair of the board. This ground-breaking and interactive program begins with an overview; then each of the seven steps is presented in sequence, with time allotted after each step for teams to work through specific assignments based on their organizations unique circumstances. Each step is also followed by group discussion. Workshop attendees will leave with valuable tools and learning to help them create a comprehensive, detailed and customized leadership transition plan for their nonprofit organizations. Specifically, attendees will: Learn to analyze organizational leadership transition options and address scenarios for both planned and unplanned change. Understand how to determine the connections between critical organizational priorities and leadership performance criteria. Gain new means of assessing organizational human resource strengths and gaps as they pertain to leadership potential, then identify and prepare key individuals to assume leadership roles. Develop the policies and procedures necessary for board and management to successfully respond to leadership change. Learn how to implement an annual, self-administered transition plan review and update. King President & CEO, Kittleman & Associates, LLC Rick King has nearly 40 years of nonprofit leadership experience as a nationally-known nonprofit executive search consultant and nonprofit chief executive officer. As President & CEO of Kittleman & Associates, LLC, he has served as the lead consultant on hundreds of searches for chief executive officers as well as for senior-level management leaders for nonprofit organizations and institutions. He is a well-known speaker and educator in nonprofit succession planning and is the creator of Seven Steps to Leadership Transition Planning, a workshop for board chairs and their CEOs. He is also the author of From Making a Profit to Making a Difference (1999), the first book written on the subject of business career transition into nonprofit sector leadership. Prior to joining Kittleman, he served as chief executive officer of three different nonprofit organizations in the fields of human services and healthcare administration. He is a founding member of the National Network of Nonprofit Search Consultants. Mr. King earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology/Sociology from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master of Social Work degree from Florida State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Dominican University. He has served as a Trustee of Dominican University for the past 13 years and is currently Chairman of the Board. He is also a Trustee on the Board of Illinois Wesleyan University.
