1 Guidelines fr Develping an Online Curse 1) If interested in develping an Online Curse, please cntact the Office f Distance Learning (ODL) t speak t ne f the instructinal designers: Charlene Stubblefield ( cjstubblefield@pvamu.edu; phne: ) r Majr Stewart ( mjstewart@pvamu.edu; phne: ). a) Please be prepared t discuss yur curse, the semester yu will teach the curse nline, and yur develpment schedule. b) At this pint yu will receive mre infrmatin abut the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and Texas A&M University System plicies and rules regarding distance learning, curse develpment, and cpyright infrmatin. c) Schedule training and/r cnsultatin with an instructinal designer. d) Please be aware that PVAMU faculty members are required t use WebCT fr all nline curses. 2) Develp nline curse - IMPORTANT NOTE: The apprval frm must be submitted and curse develpment must be cmpleted at least ne semester befre the semester in which the curse is t be delivered. Curses slated fr nline delivery in the fall must be cmplete - with apprval frms - by the previus spring (see table belw fr deadlines). Semester f new Online Curse delivery: Deadline fr cmpletin f curse develpment and submissin f apprval frms (if the 1 st falls n a weekend, the deadline will be the fllwing Mnday): Spring December 1 Summer April 1 Fall May 1 The steps fr develping an nline curse are listed belw: a) Assemble curse materials. If training is required, please assemble materials fr ne unit befre attending training and bring thse materials t the sessin. Curse materials include: i) The Official Curse Syllabus ii) The types f dcuments related t ne unit that may include: (1) Lectures (2) Assignments (3) Discussin Tpics (4) Study Guides (5) Exams (nt necessary fr intrductry training sessin) iii) Curse schedule (shuld be a separate dcument frm the syllabus) iv) Media Files (if applicable) (1) Vide files (2) Sund files (3) Image files v) Be sure t bring materials n a flash drive (USB drive), CD, r flppy disk b) Attend training. Training and cnsultatin sessins are very imprtant because they help t establish a prductive wrking relatinship between university faculty members and the ODL staff. The ODL staff is prepared t assist faculty during the entire develpment, certificatin, and delivery prcesses. i) After scheduling the training r cnsultatin sessin, develpment space n the curse management system (WebCT) server will be created fr the curse. ii) Certificatin is required fr faculty members wh intend t teach nline curses here at PVAMU. 2 Page 2 3) Obtain apprval t teach the nline curse frm Cllege Dean r Department Head. a) Cmplete curse apprval frms b) Submit signed curse apprval frms t the Office f Distance Learning (ODL) 4) Curse Review. Imprtant nte: Be sure t allw adequate review time fr the curse prir t the semester in which the curse is t be delivered. a) Ntify the ODL when curse develpment is cmplete and submit the signed Curse Apprval frm. T cmplete the curse apprval frm, please perfrm the fllwing: i) Peer review: The curse cntent must be apprved by the department s curriculum cmmittee. At this pint, issues such as the curse syllabus, subject matter, grammar, and rganizatin are reviewed. After successful review, the curriculum cmmittee chair signs the apprpriate line n the curse apprval frm. ii) Department Head review: The department reviews the curse and ensures that the answers t the questins in the self-study abve are accurate and truthful. After successful review, the department head signs the apprpriate line n the curse apprval frm. iii) Dean s Apprval: The dean reviews the self study. If the dean cncurs with the recmmendatin f the curriculum cmmittee and department head, he r she signs the apprpriate line n the curse apprval frm. The cllege dean may require a cllege-level cmmittee t review the curse and prvide recmmendatins. b) The Distance Learning Cuncil (DLC) reviews the curse and vtes n whether r nt t apprve it. i) The curse can be apprved as-is r with mdificatins ii) If mdificatins are required, the designer/faculty member will be ntified and the curse will be reviewed again after mdificatins are made. c) Once the DLC apprves the curse, the curse dcumentatin is frwarded t the Office fr Academic and Student Affairs fr apprval. i) Once apprved by the Office fr Academic and Student Affairs, the curse dcumentatin is frwarded t the University Registrar. ii) The Registrar then adds the apprved curse t the university curse inventry. Ntes: 1) In additin t the current cst per semester credit hur, students are currently charged $35.00 per credit hur fr nline curses (eg: a three semester hur curse wuld cst an additinal $105.00). 2) Any student name changes must be made thrugh the Registrar s ffice. 5) Release time Release time is t be prvided t PVAMU faculty wh develp and teach a curse which has nt been previusly delivered nline. As stated in the Distance Learning Plan (fund n the PVAMU website at: ( The assigned faculty member will receive a ne-curse reductin fr the semester in which the develpment/cnversin ccurs. In additin, the faculty member presenting the curse fr the first time will receive a ne-curse reductin. Release time is nt prvided fr duplicate curse develpment. A statement n release time can als be fund in the PVAMU Finance and Administratin Administrative Prcedures Manual (Prcedures) ) Curse Delivery Please remember t btain as much feedback frm yur students during the curse as yu can s that adjustments can be made if necessary. Student feedback is very imprtant t the prcess f making the curse as effective and engaging as pssible.
