4 INTRODUCTION Cmprehensive Guidance & Cunseling Prgram There is a critical need fr educatinal prgrams that cmprehensively integrate the skills and knwledge that will develp prductive citizens fr the 21 st century. In ur changing glbal sciety, we need a prcess fr students, educatrs, and cmmunity members t clarify thinking, t identify what graduates need t knw and be able t d, and t set gals fr educatin. An effective develpmental and cmprehensive schl cunseling prgram prvides a slid framewrk fr ensuring that ur students are well prepared t meet the academic, scial/emtinal and career challenges presented t them. This prgram intends t supprt students in meeting academic standards, assist in prviding a safe and secure envirnment fr learning, reduce dangerus and cunterprductive risk taking behavirs, and enhance student resiliency. Partnerships amng cunselrs, teachers, administratrs, parents, students, and the cmmunity at large are necessary t implement this prgram t its full extent. Thrugh partnerships, we can create practive, preventive, develpmental prgrams that will benefit all students. The cunselr is nt the prgram. Hwever, trained prfessinal cunselrs have the skills t facilitate and crdinate these partnerships fr the academic and scial grwth f children, yuth, and adults. 5 Missin/Philsphy The Suth Brunswick Schl District Guidance and Cunseling Prgram supprts student achievement thrugh a cmprehensive and develpmentally apprpriate prgram that addresses the academic, career, and persnal/scial grwth f all students. In partnership with students, staff, parents/guardians and the cmmunity, schl cunselrs facilitate and assess the effectiveness f the prgram t assist all students in acquiring the cmpetencies needed fr cnstructive participatin in sciety. The intent f this guide is t prvide cunselrs and administratrs with an verview and definitin f cmprehensive cunseling and guidance prgrams and the tls and resurces necessary t implement them. 6 OVERVIEW Cmprehensive Guidance & Cunseling Prgram Prgram Delivery The Suth Brunswick Bard f Educatin requires that a planned prgram f guidance and cunseling be an integral part f the educatinal prgram f the schls t assist pupils in making and implementing infrmed educatinal and ccupatinal chices including academic, career, and persnal/scial develpment. As such, the Bard emplyees certified staff members at each level f the rganizatin t prvide a wide-range f cunseling and guidance services based upn student need. Cunselrs assist students in persnal grwth thrugh develpment f educatinal planning, self awareness, cllectin, interpretatin and utilizatin f data, setting f gals, decisin-making, implementatin f career plans and evaluatin f persnal and career gals. The Guidance and Cunseling Prgram seeks t supprt the Bard f Educatin's Missin Statement and district gals. Belw is the prgram delivery mdel that is in place in the Suth Brunswick Schl District. Elementary Schl The Elementary Schl Cunselr prvides schl services designed t prmte student success in academics and life skills. These services include facilitating interventin and referral fr services, crdinating a unified character educatin prgram, delivering direct instructin f the Health Educatin curriculum, serving as, r supprting, the schl s Harassment, Intimidatin, and Bullying (HIB) Specialist, and prviding supprt t parents and staff, as well as individual students. Middle Schl Each middle schl is served by tw schl cunselrs. Cunselrs at the middle schl level take lead rles in teaching students abut career educatin and the 16 career clusters f the States Career Clusters Initiative. They teach students anti-bullying lessns and lessns abut sexual harassment. The cunselrs at this level help students make the transitin frm elementary schl t middle schl and assist them with their curse selectin fr the high schl. They wrk with students individually and in small grups n scial, emtinal and academic issues. High Schl: The Suth Brunswick High Schl cunseling department is designed t meet the individual needs f ur diverse student bdy by the implementatin f age apprpriate cunseling strategies and the intrductin f infrmatin that allws students t achieve their gals and reach their full ptential. The high schl cunselrs prvide a multitude f services including: individual and grup cunseling, prmting the schl s cre ethical values and character educatin, participating in the Student Supprt Team, classrm instructin n Naviance t facilitate career awareness, individualized fur-year academic planning, and serving as the schl s Harassment, Intimidatin, and Bullying (HIB) specialist. 7 OVERVIEW Cmprehensive Guidance & Cunseling Prgram Prgram Cmpnents The cmprehensive develpmental guidance and cunseling prgram cmpnents rganize the wrk f cunselrs int fur majr cmpnents: guidance curriculum, individual planning, respnsive services, and system supprt. The guidance curriculum cmpnent includes structured experiences presented systematically thrugh large- and small-grup activities frm prekindergarten thrugh grade twelve. The curriculum emphasizes decisin-making, self-understanding, career develpment, and the imprvement f study skills. The individual planning cmpnent includes cunseling activities t assist all students in planning, mnitring, and managing their wn academic achievement as well as their persnal and career develpment. Individual planning emphasizes test interpretatin and educatinal cunseling including pstsecndary and career planning. The respnsive services cmpnent addresses the immediate needs and cncerns f students. Such services include persnal cunseling; crisis cunseling; agency referral; cnsultatin with parents, teachers, and ther prfessinals; and supprt grups. The system supprt cmpnent includes indirect guidance management activities that maintain and enhance the ttal guidance and cunseling prgram. The respnsibilities f guidance cunselrs in this cmpnent encmpass staff and cmmunity relatins, special research prjects, cmmittees, prfessinal develpment, and student-supprt teams.
