As a local Cairns tourism operator having attended 18 previous Australian Tourism Exchange events around Australia, I felt this event was a standout and showcased our region perfectly. I have also received a number of positive comments from wholesalers attending the event. Well done to the entire team at the Cairns Convention Centre for an outstanding event. 3 Satchels for Schools In 2009 the Cairns Convention Centre team commenced the Satchels for Schools program, supplying left-over delegate satchels to disadvantaged school students. We are very proud to be associated with the Cairns Convention Centre. We are grateful to everyone who has been a part of this program that encourages children to go to school. When delivering the most recent satchels, parents walked seven miles to thank me for enriching their children s lives. Rev Kofi Boateng ~ Founder & CEO African Christian Homes & Rehabilitation Centre During the last five years with the outstanding support of our clients and delegates, 12,000 conference satchels for use as schoolbags have been dispatched. The satchels contained items such as caps, hats, tee shirts, disposable cups, water bottles and soft toys together with 5,000 notepads and 3,000 pens. Additionally, the Centre s staff conducted toy drives for orphans in Ghana and collected educational story books which were used to create the first library in Kalapata a village in Eastern Uganda. Some of the communities who benefit from the Centre s activities include: African Homes and Rehabilitation Centre Ghana Tanosa, a small farming community in Ghana Kalapata Children s Charity in eastern Uganda Remote schools in western Queensland (Mt Surprise & Karumba) Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) kids programs in Papua New Guinea & Arnhem Land Street Level Youth Care, Cairns Harold s House, Cairns (safe place for homeless youth) Rev. Discussion on $948 Million Industry Australia was proud to host the 16th International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding in May. This important meeting is the premier international forum for researchers, academics and industry concerned with the nutrition and feeding of aquatic animals. Aquaculture production, valued at $948 million to Australia is largely based in regional areas. The Symposium stimulated innovation in the world s growing aquaculture industries which supply more than half the world s edible seafood. Discussions included the development of sustainable feeds to support the industry and the ever present challenges of global food security. In addition to the important meeting outcomes, networking was a key element of the Symposium for the 400 delegates. A welcome reception and gala dinner were held on the Outdoor Plaza of the Cairns Convention Centre and a gap day during the Symposium allowed delegates to explore and enjoy the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.

4 Cairns Delivers Best ATE in 35 Year History The world s tourism industry was welcomed to Cairns in May when the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) attracted 1,200 Australian delegates from 429 tourism businesses who met with 600 key buyers from 38 countries for 50,000 business appointments over five days. In an unprecedented collaborative effort by Tourism Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, the State and Federal governments, Cairns Regional Council and the Cairns Convention Centre, ATE was held in a regional city for the first time in its 35 year history. The Cairns Convention Centre was completely transformed as the porte cochere area became the front verandah, the outdoor plaza a lounging space and four thousand square metres of temporary exhibition space was added to the building. In true Tropical North Queensland style, the whole Cairns community galvanized to support ATE ensuring buyers enjoyed our friendly tropical hospitality. The city was branded ATE for a week with everyone participating from airport staff, taxi drivers, restaurants, coffee shops and retail outlets. Alex De Waal, CEO Tourism Tropical North Queensland congratulated the Cairns Convention Centre team for meeting and exceeding the significant logistical demands associated with delivery of the ATE event. The feedback from our team here at Tourism and Events Queensland was that Cairns Convention Centre over delivered on every aspect of the event through the planning process as well as during the event days. As the venue for the appointments and core business element of ATE14, the Cairns Convention Centre was integral to the overwhelming success of the event. Their flexibility to include the temporary structure in the footprint, the exceptional catering, service and AV delivery all contributed to make this the best ATE ever as many of the delegates have commented. 5 Tradies Do Business The Cairns Convention Centre hosted the 2014 Danks National Trade Conference from 6-7 May attracting more than 600 delegates who participated in the business sessions, trade show and networking functions. Danks is Australia s leading hardware and garden distributor and services around 600 independently owned and operated retailers who are members of Danks marketing groups Home Timber & Hardware, Thrifty-Link Hardware and Plants Plus Garden Centres nationally. On day one delegates were immersed in the exhibition with over 100 trade suppliers, they participated in interactive seminar presentations and enjoyed the welcome reception at the historic Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. Day two saw plenary sessions designed to give an insight into the Home Timber Hardware Group trade program as well as to inspire, motivate and provide delegates with key learning outcomes to apply to their businesses. The conference ended on a high note with a gala awards dinner at the Cairns Convention Centre. I sincerely appreciated the helpfulness of your staff; they did their best to ensure all aspects of the Meeting ran smoothly. Their attention to detail and great efforts made the Meeting management much easier for me and my team.
