1 Position Title: Veterinary Central Supply Technician Position Number: Faculty/Division: Sciences Classification: HEO3 No. Direct Reports & Highest Classified Position: School/Branch: Animal and Veterinary Sciences FTE: Reports to: Director VHC Fixed Continuing x Discipline/Unit: Veterinary Health Centre Position Summary: The School of Animal and Veterinary Science at the Roseworthy Campus conducts teaching, research and clinical services through the Veterinary Health Centre (VHC), comprising the Production Animal, Equine, and Companion Animal (CAHC) Health Centres, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The school is situated on a 1600 ha property that includes a working farm, the Veterinary Health Centre, animal holding facilities, yards and sheds, and a range of general purpose and specialist teaching and research spaces and laboratories. The Veterinary Health Centre is the commercial clinical services structure embedded within the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. The VHC provides teaching and clinical services to internal and external clients offering a range of first opinion and referral services. Reporting to the Director VHC, the Central Supply Technician is a dedicated team member of the Veterinary Health Centre professional staff including veterinary nurses, client relations and laboratory technicians. Working under general direction, the Technician will provide a service to all four centres in relation to instrument preparation (cleaning, autoclaving, gas sterilizing, packing, cleaning and maintenance) in addition to arranging for repairs and maintenance of veterinary equipment whilst maintaining accurate equipment records.. Developing relationships with veterinary supply companies and advising key personnel about equipment options and purchases is required. The Technician will be required to work flexibly anywhere within the four units of the VHC as dictated by the business needs. Position Characteristics: Scope Significant internal/external relationships Special conditions The Veterinary Health Centre provides support to the school to facilitate both teaching and clinical services. The role is a part of the Veterinary Health Centre team working with Practice Managers, veterinarians and Veterinary nurses and other school staff. 2 Key Responsibilities and Outcomes Describe the key responsibilities and outcomes required for the role in the normal course of work 1 Provide equipment cleaning, maintenance and sterilising for the VHC 2 Provide administrative systems and procedures for maintaining records 3 Communicate and develop relationships with key internal and external stakeholders such as equipment companies. 4 Provide support in cleaning and maintaining surgical areas Interchange between centres transporting and distributing surgical equipment and instruments Cleaning and sterilising in autoclaves and Ethylene Oxide chambers Packing, delivering and storing surgical equipment Cleaning of instruments in ultrasonic cleaner, by and hand and instrument washer Review and develop with Practice Managers appropriate quality control systems for instrument cleaning, sterilisation and maintenance of equipment Recording and maintaining equipment records for the VHC Maintain good time management and provision of services to all four units Documenting and storing quality control records Review and develop with Practice Managers appropriate systems for cataloguing equipment and instruments Identify companies that can supply and support equipment needs to recommend to practice managers Work closely with Practice Managers to identify and source new equipment Liaise with the OH&W unit identifying any issues Supporting veterinary nurses and technicians with cleaning and maintaining surgical areas Oversee surgical and medical schedules in relation to collection, cleaning and sterilising equipment Other related duties as required in line with surgical areas

4 Knowledge and Experience Extensive experience preferable human hospital or alternative busy veterinary hospital in central supply or sterilising unit Good knowledge and understanding of bio-security and bio hazards in a clinical environment Demonstrated capacity to work independently and effectively participating in teams Good time management skills Diligence with cleaning and care of instruments to preserve their quality and ensure longevity Excellent technical and theoretical knowledge of autoclaves, gas sterilisation systems, their function and potential hazards to ensure safety. Proven ability to communicate effectively both written and oral Knowledge of basic computer skills in Microsoft office or software systems Qualifications A relevant qualification or experience in a human hospital or busy veterinary medical facility Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Requirements All Supervising staff are required to implement and maintain the University s OH&S Management System in areas under their control ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and the established Performance Standards. All other staff will assist the Head of School/Branch to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment by working safely, adhering to instructions and using the equipment provided in accordance with safe operating procedures. Where appropriate, staff will initiate and participate in worksite inspections, accident reporting and investigations, develop safe work procedures and provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision. Staff will also inform the Head of School/Branch of any unsafe working practices or hazardous working conditions.
