JOB IDENTIFICATION Job Title: Senior Technician Mentor Department(s): Central Sterile Processing Department (CSPD) Job Holder Reference: No of Job Holders: 2. JOB PURPOSE To work as a team member in providing a high quality decontamination/sterilisation service for theatres, wards and departments. Assisting the Production and Quality Supervisors in ensuring a smooth and efficient delivery of service complying with ISO To assist the Manager and Production Supervisor in delivering the training programme which will ensure the development of all staff. To ensure the knowledge and skills are developed for the department to meet the needs of the users. 3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION See attached chart 4. SCOPE AND RANGE Working in all areas of the department experienced in the following processes decontamination, checking, packing, sterilisation and dispatch. 2 Services provided to Theatre specialities: Cardiothoracic, Orthopaedic, General, Ophthalmics. ICU s and HDU s Wards on levels 2 and 3 Departments: Outpatients, Cardiology 5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Identifying sorting and preparation of dirty instruments and patient care equipment, for processing either manually or automated. Operate and maintain washers as required. Operation of computerised instrument Tracking System. Checking, inspection and assembly of equipment. The packing of instrument trays and supplementaries for Theatres. Also trays and equipment from wards and departments. Conducting the 2 nd check during trainee assessment, advising of tray errors Ensure compliance to ISO13485 by following documented procedures at all times. Compliance with all aspects of Health & Safety within the Department The appropriate use of all equipment in accordance with written instructions. Carrying out the routine daily testing and operating of Autoclaves. Work with the Production Supervisor in ensuring process workflow is maintained and priority items are identified, processed and dispatched in a timely manner. Ensure that all documentation pertinent to the Quality and production systems are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Assist with quality control and quality assurance checks and document findings as necessary. Ensuring stock levels are maintained and sufficient raw materials are available at all times. Reporting equipment faults and irregularities or difficulties to management. Instrument sets are correctly identified and contents are accurately documented. Instrument and equipment repairs are dealt with promptly, clinical staff informed of incomplete sets. Prepare Daily work rota ensuring adequate skill mix is utilised effectively

3 Take charge of any situations that arises to ensure customer requirements are met Communicate positively with Theatres Wards and Departments Carry out spot checks in working areas Keep CSPD Management up to date daily with events Ensure break times are adhered to whilst still providing cover to the department Support and develop the use of departmental competencies for induction and ongoing development of staff To deliver staff training in order to achieve the competency and skills necessary which will ensure compliance with the Quality System Liaise with the Production Supervisor to ensure training records are updated as necessary 6. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT Cart washer For cleaning carts and equipment. Ultrasonic Cleaner Used prior to washer disinfectors Washer/disinfectors For cleaning instruments, equipment & containers. Autoclaves For sterilising instruments and equipment. Anville system Independent monitoring for steriliser cycles Heat Sealer For sealing bags containing instruments and equipment prior to sterilisation. Cart Lift Clean Area For transferring sterile instruments to Theatre. Cart lift Dirty Area For returning contaminated instruments to the department. Computers Fingerprint Tracking System for rigid tracking of instruments and equipment through the above processes. Occasional work on Microsoft Word and Excel. 7. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Respond confidently to enquiries from Theatres regarding turnaround times of equipment and expected delivery. If the Production Supervisor is unavailable, then all problems or needs are dealt with by the post- holder. Acceptance of completed loads from washers and sterilisers. Non conformance of item/s and returning them to the previous process for reworking Internally, questions arising regarding instrument trays and equipment will also be directed to the post-holder. Contributes to the planning of training needs for individual staff Gives feedback on performance directly and sensitively whether the issue is positive or otherwise Performance issues will be communicated to the Production Supervisor and or CSPD Management

4 8.COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS CSPD Staff Advise of all priority work, pass on information regarding Theatre,Wards and Department requests. Training and evaluation of staff in all areas of the department Discuss issues with Senior Technicians to ensure a high standard of work is is achieved within the workplace Build and maintain effective communication between all members of the team Facilitate and encourage CSPD Staff involvement in all aspects of their development Theatre Staff Inform regarding instrument repairs, missing instruments, equipment turnaround times, requirements for following day. Resolve any problems within capabilities. Ward Staff Advise of missing instruments, resolve any problems within capabilities. Engineering Staff Inform of breakdowns and problems encountered with equipment. 9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Staff are rotated through all areas of the department. These duties are carried out in the course of the day the time spent on each part of the process varies. Good manual handling skills are necessary. Decontamination room 1. Standing at the sinks and setting up instruments in baskets. 2. Pulling carts from Theatre out of lifts. 3. Lifting instruments from carts. 4. Loading/ unloading instruments from ultrasonic cleaner. 5. Loading instruments onto washer rack pushing into washer. 6. Lifting of instrument racks and baskets onto trolleys for washers. 7. Pushing carts into the cart washer Packing room 1. Standing at the heat sealer. 2. Removing hot racks from the washer on to trolley. 3. Lifting instruments and containers from washer. 4. Sitting or standing checking and setting up instruments. 5. Lifting completed instrument sets into transfer hatch.

5 Sterilisation room 1. Lifting instrument set from transfer hatch onto Steriliser trolleys. 2. Pushing and lining up trolley into steriliser. 3. Pulling hot trolley from steriliser. 4. Loading carts for Theatres. 5. Pushing carts into lifts for Theatres. Working environment Daily exposure to heavily soiled contaminated equipment ie; Blood, bone and tissue whilst handling instruments. Exposure to hot equipment possible burn hazard following decontamination and sterilisation. Increased temperatures in the decontamination room during constant activity. 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Quick turnaround of instruments when demand is greater than available resources Machinery failures or breakdowns at critical times Late arrival of loan equipment which is unfamiliar / familiar to staff Late deliveries of equipment required in Theatres within 4 hours. To be sufficiently influential with staff and instil the highest possible standards in the delivery of the service 11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB Attendance of training course for Operators on Sterilisers and washer disinfectors. Achieved IDSc Technical Certificate At least 3 years Sterile Service experience Good organisational skills Good communication skills Good knowledge base of instrumentation Ability to work under pressure whilst ensuring standards are maintained 12.
