History Great Minds in STEM is at the forefront of developing and implementing innovative programs and partnerships focused on the continuous expansion of STEM education opportunities for our nation s underserved communities. 3 Historical Milestones 1989 The first HENAAC Conference was held as a means to identify, honor and document the contributions of outstanding Hispanic STEM professionals The organization became a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit. This new classification allowed the organization to develop additional educational programs The inaugural HENAAC College Bowl is held. This very popular conference competition provides an experience for corporations to interact with students unlike any other The HENAAC Scholars Program launches. Since then, over 830 STEM students have received scholarships totaling more than $2 million The Viva Technology Program was created to engage underserved and underrepresented youth, teachers and parents in STEM opportunities so they gain an understanding, appreciation, motivation and access to STEM-related education and career fields. Since then, Viva Technology has been implemented in 18 states and the District of Columbia, reaching over 100,000 students, teachers and parents! 2004 Future STEM Leaders Awards launched to honor the next generation of U.S. Department of Defense personnel by recognizing cadets and ROTC students for their academic and leadership achievements The STEM-Up Initiative, a first of its kind comprehensive community-based program, was introduced in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles. The initiative implements a value chain of opportunities to create Awareness, Inspiration, Motivation and Skills for students from 20 public schools, their parents, and teachers. Locally based STEM entities are actively engaged in associated activities. Best Practices at the Conference 2009 The organization s name changed from HENAAC to Great Minds in STEM. Chevron COllege Bowl Team All scholars have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA; are enrolled full-time in a STEM degree-seeking program, at an accredited college/university in the U.S. or its territories; and are either of Hispanic descent or demonstrate extensive service within the Hispanic community. GMiS offers three types of scholarships: Corporate/Government Scholarships; Special Recognition Scholarships; and In Memoriam and Personal Tribute Scholarships. Corporations, government agencies and individuals are invited to support HENAAC Scholars by sponsoring scholarships starting at $1,000. Sponsors work with GMiS to customize selection criteria and review processes, and to select applicants who merit their criteria. At the HENAAC Conference, sponsors will have the opportunity to meet their scholars and present scholarships at the Student Leadership Dinner.
