1 Engineering by the Numbers By Brian L. Yoder, Ph.D. Bachelor s Degrees and Enrollment Degrees awarded to students graduating with a bachelor s degree from an engineering program increased by 7.5 percent from 214 to 215, continuing a trend of annual growth since 27. Some of the largest year-to-year percentage increases were seen in computer engineeringrelated programs: Computer Engineering, 16.2 percent; Computer Science (inside engineering), 17.6 percent; and Electrical/Computer Engineering, 21.3 percent. Electrical Engineering was an outlier, showing only a 1.1 percent gain in bachelor s degrees over the previous year. -time enrollment in undergraduate engineering programs increased by 7.4 percent over 214, continuing a growth trend evident since 25. The largest gains were in Computer Science (inside engineering), 17.6 percent, and Engineering Management, 23.5 percent. Only two programs saw a decrease in enrollment at the bachelor s degree level: Engineering (General), which fell by 7.6 percent, and Mining Engineering, which saw a 13.4 percent drop. Master s Degrees and Enrollment Master s degrees awarded in 215 increased by 11.1 percent over 214. Similar to the trend in bachelor s degrees, computer engineering-related programs saw some of the largest percentage increases at the Master s level: Computer Science (inside engineering) rose by 32.2 percent, Electrical Engineering by 18.8 percent; and Electrical/ Computer Engineering by 2.4 percent. Engineering programs related to extraction of resources also saw large gains in Master s degrees between 214 and 215, with Mining Engineering showing a 65.3 percent gain and Petroleum Engineering growing by 25.4 percent. Enrollment in engineering Master s degree programs increased by 6.7 percent from 214 to 215. Chemical Engineering saw the largest increase: 14.4 percent. Architectural Engineering enrollment showed the biggest drop: 17.2 percent. Doctoral Degrees and Enrollment Engineering Doctoral degrees increased by 3.4 percent over 214. The largest percentage gains were seen in Computer Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Engineering Management, which saw 19. percent, 41.2 percent, and 15.6 percent gains over 214, respectively. Meanwhile, enrollment in engineering doctoral programs increased by 7.6 percent, with Engineering Management showing the biggest gain: 33.1 percent. The largest decrease was in Environmental Engineering, which fell by 6.2 percent. Engineering Students from Other Countries Students from outside the United States earned approximately the same percentage of Engineering degrees as in 214, but their enrollment increased at all degree levels. The percentage of Bachelor s degrees increased slightly, to 9.1 percent, while undergraduate enrolment increased a full percentage point, to 9.8 percent. The percentage of Master s degrees decreased slightly to 47. percent, but enrollment increased to 56.1 percent. The percentage of Doctoral degrees awarded to international students fell slightly in 215 to 54.7 percent, while enrolment was up about 2 percent to 56.9 percent. Female Engineering Students Continuing a trend of the past several years, women represented a larger percentage of Master s and Doctoral students in 215 than the year before. They also earned a larger share of graduate than of Bachelor s degrees. Females were awarded 19.9 percent of all Bachelor s degrees awarded by an engineering program in 215 and made up 21.4 percent of undergraduates enrolled in engineering. They received 25.2 percent of Master s degrees and 23.1 percent of doctoral degrees in 215. Women represented 24.1 percent of students studying for a Master s degree in 215 and 26.2 percent of those pursuing a doctorate. Faculty The number of tenured and tenure-track faculty increased from the prior year to 26,839. The number of full professors reached 13,111 as of the fall of 214, only slightly less than the combined total of associate and assistant professors 7,459 and 6,269, respectively. Women increased their representation in faculty ranks to 15.7 percent, a more than 4 percent gain since 26. African Americans stayed at the same percentage as last year, 2.5 percent, having gained only a.1 percent share since 26. Hispanics also stayed at the same percentage as last year, 3.9 percent, a.6 percent gain since 26. The proportion of Asians grew to 26.3 percent of all engineering faculty in 215. More detailed data for 368 U.S. and 9 Canadian engineering colleges can be found in the following pages of the 215 Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology Colleges or online at Brian Yoder is director of assessment, evaluation and institutional research at the American Society for Engineering Education.
