1 CBM UK, Senior Officer Major Donor Fundraising Background information The role CBM UK CBM is the largest charity dedicated to disability work in the world s poorest countries, supporting around 30 million people globally each year. We make comprehensive healthcare, education and rehabilitation services accessible to people with disabilities in the developing world. Working through local partners to transform lives and based on Christian values, we promote an inclusive world in which all people with disabilities achieve their full potential. CBM UK is one of 11 member associations around the world and is based in Cambridge. Our team of 24 staff, together with our committed Board have ambitious plans for the future. CBM UK s Fundraising & Communications department Our Fundraising and Communications Department is a dynamic team of 13, dedicated to maximising funds available for our charitable work and increasing the impact of CBM and our key messages. Our fundraising streams currently include major individual donors, trusts & foundations, legacies, corporate partnerships, direct marketing, community fundraising, as well as statutory partnerships. Our 100,000 inspirational UK supporters give around 6m annually and we have exciting growth plans under development. The Major Relationships Team Sitting within the Fundraising & Communications department, the Major Relationships team is responsible for recruiting, developing and retaining significant supporters, including individuals, trusts & foundations, legacy prospects & pledgers, as well as companies. Job title: Senior Officer Major Donor Fundraising Based: Oakington, Cambridgeshire (moving to a central Cambridge location in 2014/15). Reports to: Head of Major Relationships Direct reports: None. Purpose: To facilitate an integrated programme of acquiring and retaining individual supporters with the propensity to donate at least 2k per year. To improve our understanding of donors and prospects, develop compelling tailored
2 proposals that meet individuals needs, organise and sometimes attend engagements, and provide administrative support. Overall, to help maximise net income streams. Salary band: 3-25,000 Key criteria for success Within 12 months, the Senior Officer Major Donor Fundraising will: Be working to clear and agreed strategic objectives and plans Have contributed to the development of a compelling case for support, including a portfolio of strong project proposals for a range of funding levels Be using identified research tools to gather information useful for strong relationship-building Have up-to-date touch-point plans and gift tables Have systems which identify connections between donors and prospects with current CBM UK networks and leadership Be regularly reviewing the pool of existing and prospective major donors to ensure the programme includes the potentially most significant supporters Have organised multiple face to face meetings between CBM UK colleagues and major donors as well as attended some in support of colleagues. Key responsibilities The Senior Officer Major Donor Fundraising is a key support role, facilitating donations from a maturing major donor fundraising programme. 1. Major donor activity (70%) a) Co-ordinate regular and appropriate screening of the CBM UK database to identify high net worth individuals. b) Research the charitable interests and other relevant background information of appropriate individuals to help identify, solicit and cultivate individual donors with the propensity to give at least 2k per year. Identify opportunities for further support. c) Develop and implement systems for mapping contacts and ensuring appropriate follow-up is carried out. d) Prepare briefs on donors /prospects/influential advocates for colleagues. e) Write and develop compelling, tailored proposals which inspire major financial support. Where appropriate source images and obtain content from others. Contribute to the development of a strong overarching case for support. f) Organise major donor events, visits and meetings attended by colleagues. Events may also be attended by other supporters as appropriate, such as high donors, legacy prospects, regular givers or high profile supporters. g) Provide support to Head of Major Relationships and others at face to face major donor events, meetings and presentation pitches. 2
3 h) Other support for Head of Major Relationships, including diary management and UK travel and accommodation arrangements. 2. Communications and networking (20%) a) Internal i) Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of CBM UK s work, current ii) objectives and future plans in order to match donor interests effectively, produce appropriate and timely communications reflecting the funding needs and operational priorities of CBM UK Liaise with the Supporter Care and Supporter Growth teams to ensure major donor prospects are fed through. iii) Liaise with the Programmes and Communications teams on the production of supporting content and materials for major donor fundraising. iv) Work with other teams, including CBM International to maximise crossfertilisation opportunities and integrated working. b) External i) Work with project partners to gain information and organise supporter visits ii) to strengthen major donor fundraising. Maintain an awareness and anticipation of charity sector trends relating to major relationship fundraising to enable CBM to respond and adapt quickly where appropriate. iii) Be an outstanding advocate for CBM, delivering communications in line with the vision and values of the charity. 3. Planning, reporting, budgets (10%) a) Ensure appropriate recording of major donor fundraising activity through the database (alms.net) where possible or standard spread-sheets or files, such as the touchpoint plan, donation grids and gift records. b) Work closely with finance and programme colleagues to ensure all grants are correctly allocated and used and conditions met. c) Collate data and information to enable reporting for key performance indicators, milestones, budgets and targets to facilitate informed decisions and improved working practice. 4. Culture a) Help develop a culture of enthusiasm and success which reflects the ambitions of CBM UK. b) Play an active role across the CBM UK team, promoting positive working and innovation. Seek to improve working practice at all opportunities. Ensure that the 3
4 values of the CBM UK brand are understood by the team and its external partners and are always reflected in communications. 5. Other a) In the event of a humanitarian crisis, contribute to developing an emergency appeal to appropriate major supporters at short notice. b) Support the Head of Major Relationships in developing strategies for individual major donors. c) Occasional travel throughout the UK, including out of normal office working hours. d) Carry out any other duties as required by the Head of Major Relationships and Director of Fundraising & Communications. Person specification Experience and knowledge Demonstrable success working within a major relationships fundraising team (preferably with individuals giving at least five figure gifts) Experience developing strong case for support and/or multiple tailored fundraising proposals for major donors Experience working with relationship fundraising database Knowledge of effective prospect research techniques Experience working with influential advocates and/or high profile individuals and their support functions Experience of working in a developing country context and/or in the development sector Knowledge of disability issues Skills/competencies/personal qualities Outstanding writing skills. Ability to take information from a variety of sources and summarise into compelling content which inspires gifts and allows supporters to have major impact. Excellent English language skills. Intellectual curiosity to understand complex arguments within international development. Ability to prepare a brief quickly; to produce innovative proposals. Strong organisational skills. Effective time-management with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks to ensure deadlines are met. Able to analyse and prioritise information gathered from multiple sources to summarise/accurately record appropriate donor information. Understanding of donor interests; appreciation of different donor motivations, triggers for giving, values and beliefs. Problem solving: able to evaluate issues, come up with imaginative solutions, and make a convincing case for those solutions. Robust, can-do attitude that thrives on challenges. Target driven. Friendly manner, able to liaise sensitively with supporters. Adept in use of MS Office, including Excel. / 4
