2 Introduction to CIEL Innovate UK ( ) is establishing a network of agricultural innovation centres, one of the key recommendations of the UK s Agri-Tech Strategy published in June As part of the Government s Agri-tech Strategy published in 2013, Innovate UK ( has established four agricultural innovation centres. The largest of these, CIEL, is a partnership of the UK s leading academic and industry players in the field of livestock, and will develop and coordinate a network of state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to delivering cutting edge research to the UK s livestock sector. CIEL has been established as a Company Limited by Guarantee. Vision CIEL s vision is to support, promote and deliver innovative, industry-led research for sustainable intensification of the UK livestock sector through a single centre, with the aim of generating wealth and business competitiveness through the growth in profitability of that sector. CIEL is a partnership of multinational, UK and small companies across the animal breeding, health, feed, nutrition and technology sectors together with levy boards, leading research providers and veterinary service companies. CIEL USPs CIEL will bring together the UK s key research and knowledge exchange providers in the beef, dairy, pigs, poultry and sheep sectors in a unique collaboration CIEL will involve an 86.5 million investment over five years in state-of-the-art research facilities for UK animal science CIEL will cover the whole food chain at all levels from cell to system, from production to food quality and food safety CIEL headquarters will be at the National AgriFood Innovation Campus at York, giving easy access to CIEL

3 Business Development Manager (BDM) The Candidate Reporting to the Head of Innovation the Business Development Manager will facilitate the winning of new business and funding streams with multinational, and UK companies across the animal breeding, health, feed, nutrition and technology sectors together with levy boards, leading research providers and veterinary service companies. The right candidate will have knowledge and experience in the livestock sector and come with an established network and creative ideas on how to develop this into opportunities for CIEL. Creating appropriate collaboration and enabling partnership opportunities will be a major role of the positions. They will be enthused by being part of a new approach to research in the Livestock sector, and will bring exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills to bear on the role. Extensive travel will be required for this position, as well as a flexible attitude towards working hours. The Role Profile Prospect for potential new clients and turn this into increased business. Present new products and services and enhance existing relationships; Work with technical staff and other colleagues to meet customer needs; Arrange and participate in internal and external client debriefs; Cold call as appropriate within your market or geographic area to ensure a robust pipeline of opportunities; Identify potential clients, and the decision makers within the client organisation; Meet potential clients by growing, maintaining, and leveraging your network; Research and build relationships with new clients. Attend industry functions, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends; Plan approaches and pitches. Work with team to develop proposals that speaks to the client s needs, concerns, and objectives; Participate in pricing the solution/service; Present to and consult with Head of Innovation on business trends with a view to developing new services, products, and distribution channels; Work with the Research manager to ensure smooth transition into delivery; Identify opportunities for campaigns, services, and distribution channels that will lead to an increase in sales; Using knowledge of the market and competitors, identify and develop CIEL s unique selling propositions and differentiators; Ensure that data is accurately entered and managed within the company s CRM or other sales management system;

4 Track and record activity on accounts and help to close deals to meet these targets; Research and develop a thorough understanding of CIEL s capabilities. Experience and Qualifications Essential criteria: A good honours degree in a life sciences and/or environmental sustainability discipline (or equivalent experience); Proven, commercial, ability, within a relevant industry sector, in developing new business and fostering existing business contacts; Experience of writing successful proposals for funding within commercial technical research environment; Knowledge and understanding of technology exchange and technology commercialisation issues including intellectual property matters; Experience of preparing and giving presentations to a range of technical and non-technical audiences Experience of data collection and report writing; Experience of account management and co-ordinating cross-selling opportunities; Ability to liaise effectively with a wide variety of colleagues (both technical and nontechnical); Ability to build effective relationships between a range of different organisations; Experience of leading contract negotiations and a proven ability to interpret complex/scientific service needs; Experience of project management and of managing budgets Excellent interpersonal skills with an approachable demeanour that promotes customer confidence; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Track record of seeking fit-for purpose practicable solutions to customer s problems; Range of existing contacts in areas relevant to the role; Ability to analyse and solve problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications; Experience of developing and maintaining a network of contacts throughout own work area Good time management skills and ability to work pro-actively Flexible approach to work both as team member and on own initiative, willing to undertake some UK and overseas travel; Ability to work accurately to tight deadlines and on own initiative when required. Desirable criteria: Experience of business-university interactions; Experience of marketing/promotion or customer-facing activities;

5 Business Development Experience in the livestock sector; Experience of working at the business-academia interface; Experience of establishing and supporting large multi-partner, multi-organisational networks; Awareness of the mechanisms and project formats available for funding and facilitating university-business interaction. The Package Initially a 3 year fixed-term contract, there is an opportunity for this to position to become permanent pending the delivery of the CIEL vision and goals, which the CEO and the foundation management team will work together to achieve. The post is based at the National AgriFood Innovation Campus at York, where excellent facilities are available. A salary of 40k with the opportunity to earn up to a 10k performance based bonus plus a competitive benefits package will be available for the right candidate.
