2 About Future First Future First works to close the achievement gap between those born into low-income and high-income homes and, in doing so, contribute to improving social mobility. We help state schools and colleges build thriving, engaged alumni communities. Former students can have a transformative effect on young people studying today, returning to act as inspirational career role models and mentors, or to offer valuable work experience placements or in-lesson support. Former students can also support the wider school community to flourish by acting as governors, using their experience of the school and community to shape its future, or by raising funds to support the school to run additional activities and provide further resources. We build the infrastructure around state schools which allows them to engage, track and mobilise their former students both older alumni and recent leavers. Within every school and college s alumni community, there is a host of potential career and education role models, work experience providers, mentors, fundraisers and donors. Future First helps schools and colleges to harness this resource. We currently work with over 400 state schools and colleges across England and Wales (more than 10% nationwide). In we worked directly with over 24,000 young people, and have signed up more than 100,000 people to support their old school. Our work is guided by a range of education policy experts, from our Executive Chair, Christine Gilbert CBE, former Head of Ofsted, to an Advisory Council including former Secretary of State for Education, Baroness Estelle Morris CBE. In 2014 our work was included in the Department for Education s best practice guidance on Careers guidance and inspiration for young people in schools. However there is still more to do! We re committed to expanding our work to more schools, including in Scotland and Northern Ireland, learning as we go and refining and adapting our programme to achieve the biggest possible impact for young people. We re proud of our culture and are committed to Future First being a great place to work. On our most recent staff survey I have positive working relationship with colleagues and Success is recognised and praised in the team scored especially highly (5.7 and 5.3 out of 6 respectively). About this role This is a new role, reflecting an exciting new phase in Future First s growth. You will be responsible for developing Future First s communications, fundraising and business development functions, ensuring we cultivate and manage the key external relationships that will support the growth of alumni networks into every state school and college across the country.

3 As the head of a small team, the role combines the leadership and management of each function with a key operational role in delivering against each one. You will also play a critical role in our senior leadership team working with the wider team to develop our operations now, as well as our long-term strategy. This in one of two roles on our senior leadership team for which we are currently recruiting. You will join our existing Executive Chair, Managing Director and Director of Operations, as well as a new Director of Programmes. This is a hugely exciting time to be joining the organisation. We ve already helped 10% of schools to reach out to their former students. Now we re looking for an exceptional candidate to help us create a genuinely national culture of alumni engagement. We need someone who will build amazing relationships, thrive in this fast paced environment and is motivated by having significant personal impact on the future success of the organisation.

4 Director - Business Development, Partnerships & Communications - Job Description Job title Director Business Development, Partnerships & Communications Reports to Managing Director Responsible for Fundraising & Advocacy Officer, Press Officer, Sales Officer* *this role is currently in place for part of the year only Salary band 36,000-40,000 Contract type Permanent (with three month probation period) Location Future First head office, central London Last updated May 2015 Role purpose To raise awareness of Future First and raise sufficient income to ensure our work continues to grow, have the maximum possible impact and be financially sustainable. Duties & responsibilities 1. Business development Lead our sales into new state secondary schools and colleges, from individual to group sales e.g. academy chains. Seek and build new partnerships with employers which help further our social objectives and generate revenue. 2. Marketing and communications Lead the creation and implementation of an integrated media and communications strategy. Lead the development of Future First s brand identity and ensure it is consistently applied across the charity. 3. Fundraising Oversee the organisation s development function, generating sufficient income to ensure financial sustainability and development. This will include taking a personal lead on larger grant applications. Seek new funders and manage relationships with a number of Future First s key supporters.

5 4. Advocacy and campaigns Ensure Future First is recognised and has a voice at a UK policy level; including through government at all levels and influential think tanks. Planning and leading on campaigns, including securing sponsorship for larger campaigns such as Back to School Week. 5. Strategic partnerships Build great relationships with key individuals and organisations across the public, private and social sector. Create strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations. Ensure programmatic partnerships are aligned with core operational targets, alongside the Director of Programmes. 6. Other Represent Future First externally. Work collaboratively as a member of the Senior Leadership Team to develop Future First s strategic direction and operational plans. Act as a role model and motivator through living the charity s values and ensuring staff work collaboratively to deliver organisational goals. Take responsibility for overseeing and supporting those team members under his/her line management to ensure they are trained, supported and resourced to undertake their jobs effectively.

6 Director Business Development, Partnerships & Communications Person Specification Essential: Significant experience in at least one of the key areas of this role. Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to pitch to senior people. Excellent interpersonal skills to manage a wide variety of internal and external relationships. Outstanding written communication skills. Strong knowledge of the UK state education system and an understanding of issues facing students in UK. Passion for issues surrounding social mobility and education. Entrepreneurial, self-starter, able to turn ideas into outcomes. Strategic thinker, able to question and improve upon the status quo. Ability to manage competing priorities, to work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment and still produce quality outputs. Degree-level qualified or significant relevant work experience. Desirable: Experience of direct sales, in particular to schools and further education colleges Experience of fundraising from grant and corporate donors Experience of policy and campaigning Experience of managing staff
