Lectures, demnstratins, grup/nline discussins, field trips, guest lecturers, and ther nline cntent will intrduce varius issues assciated with digital media arts and STEM careers and educatinal prgrams. Assigned prjects, readings, presentatins, and nline wrk will assist in a critical understanding better preparing the student fr further study in Digital Media Arts careers and prgrams. Objectives Students will demnstrate an appreciatin f and/r be able t navigate: - Cllege life, academic, and career ptins specific t STEM and DMA fields - Effective learning and study techniques - Academic cunseling in rder t cmplete a degree and/r transfer t a university in tw years - Current prfessinals wrking in the fields f DMA thrugh Field Trips and Guest Lectures - UNM Main Campus ptins fr transfer thrugh a guided tur f multiple facilities and advising services - A familiarity with the variety f media available in the digital media arts and understand the pprtunities ffered by these varius materials and techniques fr career and educatinal ptins. - Lifelng learning and citizenship skills

2 Student Respnsibilities - Have a UNM and NetID t access WebCT. - Students MUST have access t a cmputer with Internet fr this nline curse. Office Max (nt recmmended very expensive!) - Students must have basic cmputer and file management skills fr all DMA curses, especially hybrid curses. Required pre/c requisite is IT 101: Cmputer FUNdamentals. Students that fall behind due t lack f basic cmputer skills will be drpped. - Students must successfully cmplete all in-class assignments n time and maintain a safe, respectable, psitive lab envirnment. - Students must cmplete all nline requirements and be an active participant in this nline curse s cmmunity. - Students must lg n t this curse at a minimum f three times a week. It is a requirement t check yur regularly fr any cmmunicatin frm the instructr. - Students must understand that this curse requires utside f the classrm attendance. We will g n field trips as a grup, and yu will g n sme n yur wn. If there are any transprtatin issues that may hinder this, please let the instructr knw as sn as pssible s arrangements fr transprtatin can be made. - Always keep a backup f yur wrk! Yu will need t back up all f yur wrk in at least 2 places, but I recmmend 3. Yu can save yur wrk t the classrm netwrk, a Flash Drive, CD s, and ther lcatins nline. Yu will never get credit fr wrk that was lst withut a back-up!!! - Any frm f plagiarism is strictly prhibited. - All cell phnes need t be muted during class times. If yu must receive a call, leave the lab BEFORE yu answer. 3 Attendance/Participatin Attendance: - Students are required t attend class, arrive n time, remain present until the end f class, and be prepared fr each day s wrk. Mre than three absences withut prir cnsultatin may result in a failing grade r a drp frm the class. Leaving early r arriving late three times results in ne absence. - If yu have nt attended class fr three cnsecutive class perids (including classrm and nline) and have made n attempt t call/ /im/cntact me, yu WILL be drpped. - Students wh d nt attend the first week f class will autmatically be drpped. - Students will need t wrk a few hurs each tw week sessin in additin t the scheduled class times. Participatin: Weekly student classrm/nline attendance, participatin and respnse in hybrid curses are cnsidered a necessary factr in the learning prcess. In this frm f classrm AND cmputer-based learning, weekly nline participatin is equivalent t class attendance fr that week. If n student nline respnse ccurs during a week f the semester, the student is cnsidered absent. Students are still held respnsible fr all academic wrk required r perfrmed during their absence regardless f the reasns fr thse absences. Class participatin influences yur grade heavily. Participatin includes: Successful participatin in this curse requires access t the crrect technlgy with the necessary cmputer skills. Please see Student Respnsibilities. Students are required t cmplete all wrk n time. This includes ding the fllwing: Participate in class discussins, nt nly by being present, but by als talking!! Attend all field trips and guest lecture events D all the required reading within the week it is psted Cmplete and cmprehend the weekly lectures (in-class & nline) within the week they are presented Cntribute t all threaded discussins in a timely manner Make meaningful entries t the nline Jurnal(s) as requested Participate in cmpleting/discussing the Virtual Field Trip & Web Search Cmplete each weekly Learning Mdule successfully and within the timeframe alltted Exhibiting a general willingness t try!

4 Grading Plicy - All nline wrk will be graded accrding t the DISCUSSION RUBRICS r JOURNAL RUBRICS (see separate dcument) - Lectures, Readings, Web Searches, Field Trips and Other Activities will all be evaluated either thrugh Threaded Discussins and/r Jurnal Entries. - Grading is based n a timely cmpletin f curse participatin requirements, the quality f individual critical develpment, and a persnal cmmitment t yur wrk. Persnal cmmitment invlves regular participatin, cnsistent effrt, cmpletin f wrk, and the general willingness t try. - N full credit will be given fr any late wrk. If wrk is nt delivered n time, an autmatic 0 pints will be given. Yu will need t make arrangements with me if yu are planning t make-up the wrk, and a fair grade will be issued nce the wrk has been submitted. N late discussin pstings will be accepted. Full credit will never be issued fr late wrk except in extreme cases and with prir ntificatin n exceptins. There will be ne discussin psting make-up assignment: T substitute fr ne missed discussin psting, the student can write a 500-wrd article summing up the missed discussin bard cntent. If thers disagree with what smene has said, "flaming," r ranting at smene else is unacceptable; it's the equivalent f having a tantrum, smething mst f us wuldn't d in a traditinal classrm setting. Stalking and dergatry cmments are inapprpriate. Stalking smene, r any dergatry r inapprpriate cmments, jkes, and frwarded s regarding race, gender, age, religin, sexual rientatin, are unacceptable and subject t the same disciplinary actin that they wuld receive if they ccurred in the physical classrm. 7 Methd f Instructin Methds f instructin include in-class lectures, demnstratins, discussins, field trips, guest lecturers and presentatins. There will als be supplemental ut-f-class and nline instructin (listed n the schedule as WebCT: L.M.. ) that will include readings, lectures, threaded discussins, jurnal questins, virtual field trips, web searches, reading nline articles/websites, and ther activities presented t the student thrugh Weekly Learning Mdules. In-Class Lectures, Demnstratins, Discussins, Presentatins every tw weeks we will meet nce n campus. A variety f issues will be presented and discussed. Field Trips We will g n tw scheduled field trips this semester. Guest Lecturers There will be at least ne, if nt mre, visiting lecturers t ur class this semester. Online Lecture In the Weekly Learning Mdule in WebCT, the student will access an nline lecture t supplement the in-class cntent fr the tw week perid. The lecture will be presented in any number f frmats, including written, pht, audi, vide, and mre. A written transcript will be prvided as needed. Threaded Discussin Yu will be required t participate in nline discussins meant t simulate classrm discussin. The due date fr discussin pstings is lcated in the Learning Mdules psted every tw weeks, n the curse schedule and in the calendar tl in WebCT. The student shuld pst his/her wn reply t the listed tpic and then pst a reply t at least three ther student s pstings befre each due date. I encurage yu t pst thrughut the week, and nt wait until the last day. I will nt accept ANY late discussin pstings fr credit. Jurnal Entries Tpic questins that will be answered and submitted n WebCT. Virtual Field Trip The student will click n a list f websites that will take the student t a variety f supprting websites fr that week s learning mdule. A summary f the trip will be psted in the Grup Jurnal f the curse. Web Searches The student may be given a tpic t search fr credible websites and then required t list the URLs and descriptins f cinema related tpics fund n the Internet. Online Reading The student will be required t read a variety f nline articles. Links t these articles will be psted in the Learning Mdules. Other Activities There may be ther learning activities assciated with the weekly cntent f the curse that will be fund in the Learning Mdules r given in class.
