Management cnsle still requires that a user view the cnsle and manually respnd t a state change in the mdel. Usually these tls are used t detect prblems with services and devices autmatically. When it cmes dwn t an autmatic respnse n certain events, scripts have t be prgrammed t define rules fr the reactins n these events. This apprach leads t sme serius prblems: An administratr is nt necessarily a gd prgrammer (and vice versa). Primary design gals f the AmdSft/b4 architecture are t allw fr the autmatin f deplyment, peratins, and maintenance tasks within the data center. The architecture defines an bject mdel, which virtualizes the data center. The architecture realizes the manipulatin f these bjects in the real wrld by perfrming peratins n actual devices. The abstractin hides the cmplexity f individual service implementatins. Manipulating the Object Mdel The bject manager manages the bject mdel and the bject realizatins. The bject manager prvides a Client API, which allws varius clients applicatins t be written that can retrieve data frm the mdel and manipulate the bjects in the mdel. Autmating Client Applicatins Within AmdSft/b4 there are intrinsic and extrinsic client applicatins that perfrm varius levels f autmatin. There are 3 methds f adding autmatin lgic: 1. The management cnsle has a Rules Editr fr a user t quickly write a rule and enable it t run with the user s privileges. The rule sets execute with a given rles s access cntrl is maintained and the rule has n mre authrity than the rle which created it. A set f rules, which mnitr a service and, upn failure, the cntrller s the peratr and attempts t restart the service. Pssible Appraches Graphical General Purpse Tls There are a variety f graphical develpment tls in the market that culd be used t address this prblem. These tls usually use graphical ntatins such as UML t describe structure and behavir f sftware. Frm the graphical descriptin f rules the cde culd be generated autmatically. Therefre this apprach cannt nly slve the same prblems like the graphical general-purpse tls, but can als address the remaining prblems: An administratr des nt need t be a gd prgrammer, because he nly has a cuple f methds t deal with. Since they have a clear fcus n ne prblem it takes nly a cuple f hurs r days f training and experience t be able t wrk with these tls. A graphical dmain specific tl can supprt directly methds fr handling netwrk bjects such as agents and mnitrs because it is designed t supprt them. The restricted and specific set f methds leads t similar slutins fr the same kind f prblem. Hence patterns used by ne administratr can easily be recgnized by anther. The AmdSft/b4 Graphical Rules Engine (b4/gre) is a graphical dmain specific tl, which allws the IT administratr t create and manage rules/prcesses t describe an autmated respnse changes in the IT infrastructure. 12 AmdSft Systems b4 White Paper Rule Develpment and Executin Cycle 1. The administratr describes (graphical mdeling) hw t react if certain events ccur within the b4 cntrlled IT infrastructure. The autmated rule checker detects syntax and semantic errrs during the mdeling prcess. 2. b4 Cntrller mnitrs the bjects and services and changes the bject state accrdingly (e.g. SQL Database state is DOWN). If a mnitred event r cmbinatin f events ccurs, it triggers a specific rule t fix the prblem. 3. The Rules Engine executes and cntrls the activated rules. 4. The rules can be cnfigured t infrm the administratr per r SMS abut the status f the peratin. 5. Incident Management Systems can be autmatically infrmed and incident created (ITIL). Single rules r grups f rules can be activated and deactivated. Rules and grups can be shwn and hidden manually r by using filters. This is very useful in bigger envirnments that require a large amunt f rules. The service prvisining prcess is accmplished by installing sftware n a Resurce. The Resurce bject is defined as a server running an perating system. This creates a Sftware Element bject. The Sftware Element bject, in turn, creates a Service bject. Once the Service bject is created, it can be started t make that Service visible n the netwrk. 16 AmdSft Systems b4 White Paper Operating System Prvisining Prvisining is the prcess by which bjects are created. A Resurce is defined as a device with an Operating System installed. Hence, OS Prvisining is the mean by which an un-prvisined device is transfrmed int a Resurce. Once a Resurce has been created, Sftware Prvisining is the mean by which a Sftware Element is created n a Resurce. A Sftware Element represents an installed sftware package. A Sftware Element may supprt multiple services, just as ne Resurce may supprt multiple sftware elements. Unattended OS Prvisining prvides numerus benefits: The first is the reductin in time taken t install an Operating System. Additinally OS installatin is standardized and cntrlled thrugh a single Management Cnsle. Mrever, prvisining can be dne cncurrently. Resurce Resurce Available Device Unavailable Device Figure 9 shws the transitin f the bjects thrugh Unavailable Device and Available Device states. When a new server is bted, it nly has a MAC address fr each netwrk card and n IP address. This is called the Unavailable Device state. The system is dwnladed with an image, which can be cntrlled by the b4 cntrller. Once the image reprts t the cntrller, the device appears n the management cnsle as an Available Device, which the MAC address displayed as its name. At this pint, an OS prvisining package can be installed n the Available devices. Once the installatin is cmplete and the device rebted, it appears as a new Resurce. The user selects an perating system and the pane refreshes with the OS installatin parameters that are required t install that OS prvisining package. Once the installatin parameters are cmplete, the OS installatin begins. This installatin shuld be cmplete withut any further interventin. The first is the reductin in time taken t install an perating system t apprximately 10 minutes fr Linux 7.1, less than 30 minutes fr Windws NT, and less than 60 minutes fr Windws Additinally, this prvisining can be dne cncurrently. Applicatin Prvisining The management cnsle displays a list f sftware prvisining packages that can be installed. The user selects a sftware package and the pane refreshes with the sftware installatin parameters that are required t install the selected sftware-prvisining package. Parameters preceded by a star are required parameters. Once the installatin parameters are cmplete, the sftware installatin begins. This installatin shuld be cmplete withut any further interventin. An installed sftware package is a sftware element. This is accmplished by selecting the sftware element (via the Device pane r the Sftware pane) and pressing the Create Service icn. The management cnsle displays a list f sftware versins and patches that can be installed. When new perating systems r applicatin patches are released, administratrs can quickly deply server snapshts t all servers remtely. By reducing cmplexity f server deplyment, b4 reduces server dwntime and peratr errrs in setting up r cnfiguring servers. Cntent Prvisining The final step in making a service fully functinal is t install its cntent. Frm the management cnsle, the user selects a target Service n which t install a cntent prvisining package. The management cnsle displays a list f cntent prvisining packages that can be installed. The user selects a package and the pane refreshes with the installatin parameters that are required t install the selected cntent prvisining package. Once the installatin parameters are cmplete, the cntent installatin begins. This installatin shuld be cmplete withut any further interventin. The management structure bjects within the b4 mdel allw fr the same peratins t be perfrmed n a cllectin bject, which is interpreted as having the same actin perfrmed n each member bject. These actins are handling in parallel. In additin, these peratins are accessible via the Client API such that a client applicatin can be written t prvide higher levels f functinality. The pd prvisining applicatin is ne such client applicatin, which reads in a file, which defines the rder in which multiple cmpnents f a pd are t be prvisined. In additin, it can create the management hierarchy frm scratch r append the newly create bjects t an existing management hierarchy. The Prvisining System gives the cntrller the ability t add cmpute devices and services t the custmer pd. The cntrller recgnizes a new system when it is cnnected int the netwrk (and rebted) and displays it n the management cnsle. The user interacts with the management cnsle t select the perating system and then the applicatin, which will be installed n the device. Once installed and started, the device and service can be added int the hierarchy. In additin, existing devices, already managed by the cntrller, can have additinal applicatins installed n them.
