STATEMENT OF NEED: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an important public health problem where every year, at least 1.7 million TBIs occur either as an isolated injury or along with other injuries. The CDC also reports that TBI is a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States and that about 75% of TBIs that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild TBI. This program will outline provide updates on current research and evidence-based practice in the medical management of brain injury and mild TBI including concussion to facilitate maximum recovery of traumatic brain injured patients. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: All North Shore-LIJ Health System continuing education activities are designed to improve patient care, safety and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: n DESCRIBE the acute care management after a traumatic brain injury. n EXPLAIN the treatment of neuropsychiatric manifestations after traumatic brain injury in an outpatient setting. n DISCUSS the utility of neurocognitive evaluation in concussion evaluation and management. n EXPLAIN sexuality after traumatic brain injury. n DESCRIBE current concepts of pain and suffering in traumatic brain injury. n EXPLAIN return to play guidelines in concussion. n DISCUSS the management of concussions when symptoms do not resolve. n DESCRIBE the assessment of vestibular and ocular function after a traumatic brain injury. n EXPLAIN the approach to concussions in the pediatric athlete. n DISCUSS how to translate evidence-based cognitive remediation recommendations into practice. n DESCRIBE the team approach to concussion management. TARGET AUDIENCE: Physiatrists, Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Neuropsychologists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Nurses, Residents, Athletic Trainers, Coaches, Physical Education Teachers and other health care professionals involved in practice, education, management, treatment and research of brain injury and concussion. CME ACCREDITATION: North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT DESIGNATION: North Shore-LIJ Health System designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: Physical Therapists: Long Island Jewish Medical Center, member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is recognized by the New York State Education Department s State Board for Physical Therapy as an approved provider of physical therapy and physical therapist assistant continuing education. Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the conference for 7.8 contact hours. Occupational Therapists: North Shore-LIJ Health System Rehabilitation Network is a NBCOT Professional Development Provider 6.5 contact hours. Speech-Language Pathologists: This introductory course is offered for.65 ASHA CEUs (Introductory Level, Professional Area). Nursing Credit: The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) will accept 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 credit as equal to 1.0 ANCC contact hours. Athletic Trainers: North Shore-LIJ Health System Rehabilitation Network is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers. This program has been approved for a maximum of 6.5 hours of Category A continuing education. CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE: Certificate of attendance will be awarded to qualifying participants at the end of the lecture.
