2 Course Description The Joint Commission requires institutions to have a mechanism to address ethical issues in patient care. Most institutions comply with this requirement by ethics consultation. This symposium will sharpen your skills and prepare you to meet future certification requirements to perform ethics consultation in your institution. The keynote speaker, Mark Kuczewski, PhD, is Director of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics at Loyola University Chicago and a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) Clinical Ethics Consultation Affairs Committee that is developing the certification program for ethics consultants. The Symposium will feature a video and discussion of how to evaluate the quality of ethics case consultations, demonstrate that the language used by healthcare professionals including ethics consultants matters; highlight societal changes making decision-making in patient care and ethics consultation for older patients more challenging; and provide interdisciplinary opportunities for practicing ethical analysis and resolution of challenging cases in the opening panel case discussion and setting-specific breakout groups. Objectives At the completion of this program, participants should be able to identify competencies that provide evidence of quality ethics case consultation; 2. apply the process of ethical decision-making to particular clinical ethics case consultations; 3. discuss ways in which word choice can contribute to conflict resulting in a need for ethics consultation; 4. explore ways in which word choice and framing can be used as vehicles to facilitate competent and honest ethics consultation; and 5. highlight the new ethical challenges in treating older adults. Course Credits This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the WVU School of Medicine and WV Network of Ethics Committees. The WVU School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The WVU Office of CME designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This continuing education activity has been provided by the West Virginia University School of Nursing for 6.3 contact hours. The West Virginia University School of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing education by the State of West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses, Legislative Rule 19CSR11-4 under provider number WV RN. This course is sponsored by the Center for Health Ethics and Law, Provider Number , which is a Certified Provider of continuing education credits for social workers. This program has been awarded up to 5.25 hours of continuing education credit. This program qualifies for 6.30 hours of credit under the West Virginia Rules for Mandatory Continuing Legal Education. This educational offering has been reviewed and approved by the Division of Continuing and Professional Education of West Virginia University for CEUs. 4 Course Faculty Mark Kuczewski, PhD - Director of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, the Father Michael I. English, S.J., Professor in Medical Ethics, and Chair, Department of Medical Education at the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities Clinical Ethics Consultation Affairs Committee that is developing the certification program for ethics consultants. He oversees one of the most popular online Master s programs in Bioethics in the country. Alvin Moss, MD, FACP, FAAHPM - Professor of Medicine, West Virginia University School of Medicine; Chair, WVUH Ethics Committee; Director, WV Network of Ethics Committees. Dr. Moss is the Medical Director of the WVU Hospital Supportive Care team. Dr. Moss has performed ethics consults for more than 25 years and taught about ethics consultation at the state and national level for more than 20 years. His research includes innovations to improve advance care planning and end-of-life care. Sandra Price, JD - Risk Manager for the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center at WVU. Sandy regularly presents educational programs on risk management, documentation and liability, informed consent, communication, confidentiality, and related legal issues to the students, residents and faculty in the clinical departments of the Health Sciences Center. Additionally, she serves as an ex-officio member of the Advisory Committee for the WVNEC and teaches Health Care Torts at the West Virginia University College of Law. Valerie Satkoske, MSW, PhD - Director of Ethics and ethics committee member for Wheeling Hospital and an ethics consultant for The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the West Virginia Rural Emergency Trauma Institute. Dr. Satkoske is faculty at West Virginia University School of Medicine and a core faculty member in the University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics and Health Law and the University of Pittsburgh Consortium Ethics Program.
