To understand the role and assessment process of the chaplain and social worker in providing care to patients, families and community and how it fits into inter-disciplinary care on an ICU brain injury unit. 6 Presenters Kenneth Britton, DO Kenneth Britton is a physiatrist practicing in St. Paul, MN. He graduated from Des Moines University, interned at Des Moines General Hospital and then served as a primary care physician with the Public Health Service before completing his residency training at the University of Minnesota. He is a former Rehabilitation Medical Director at and now practices in his private clinic in St. Paul. Dr. Britton also serves as the Medical Director for Brain Injury Services at Red Wing Healthcare Community. Linda Griffith, MOT, OTR/L, CBIS As an occupational therapist, Linda Griffith has been working with brain injury clientele for the past 23 years. In 2002 she received her brain injury specialist certification and now serves on the outpatient brain injury team. Linda also works with patients in the Community Reintegration Program at the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute of Golden Valley. Tom Odland In March of 2008 at the age 48, Tom Odland survived a stroke. He is married and has four daughters, all of whom were teenagers at the time of his stroke. After 5 ½ years of recovery, Tom returned to his work as a consultant in the medical device industry. Bud Rosenfield, JD Bud Rosenfield is a supervising attorney with the Minnesota Disability Law Center (MDLC). The MDLC is a project of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA), a private, non-profit legal aid office that serves as the statewide Protection and Advocacy System for persons with disabilities in Minnesota. The MDLC provides direct representation to children and adults with brain injuries and other disabilities, in many subject areas including special education, community services, health care and civil rights. The MDLC also provides legislative and policy advocacy, training and outreach on these and other subjects. Mr. Rosenfield supervises the work of the MDLC s Community Services & Integration and Access & Discrimination teams. Rev. Brian Gutzmann, MDiv, BCC Brian is an ordained pastor with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and a board certified chaplain (BCC) with the Association of Professional Chaplains. He has been employed as a chaplain at HealthEast for the past seven years six of which as designated chaplain to the National Brain Aneurysm Center at St. Joseph s Hospital. Brian has an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Master of Divinity degree from the Graduate Theological Union/University of California-Berkeley. Previous to his work as a chaplain, Mr. Gutzmann also served as a parish pastor in California and Minnesota. Heidi Hamilton, MPH For the past 20 years, Heidi Hamilton has played an integral role in the disabled community as a direct care staff, case manager, advocate and family member. She completed her master s degree in Public Health and Community Health Education from the University of Minnesota. Heidi is currently the legislative lead for the Disability Services Division at the Minnesota Department of Human Services and also has responsibility for several large policy initiatives, including the implementation in Minnesota of the new federal definition of home and community-based settings. Mary Tschida, CMSW Mary completed her bachelor s degree in in social work from Mankato State University; she then went on to earn her master s degree in social work from Augsburg College. Over the past 19 years, she has served as a clinical social worker with HealthEast Care System including the roles in the mental health and hospice care units, and as the designated clinical social worker for the National Brain Aneurysm Center at St. Joseph s Hospital. In all, Mary has over 25 years of experience as a medical social worker and currently serves on HealthEast s Ethic and Patient s Rights Committee. Richard Young, PhD Richard Young completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology at Kent State University. For most of his career, he worked directly with adult and geriatric medical patients as a hospital-based psychologist in Ohio and Minnesota. Currently, Dr. Young serves as the rehabilitation psychologist at the Regions Rehabilitation Institute, where he assesses and treats patients who have experienced traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and other conditions. Nicole Lainhart, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIS Nicole Lainhart is a lead Speech-Language pathologist and coordinator of the Community Reintegration Program at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Golden Valley.
