A. JOB SUMMARY The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice, and is recognized internationally as a ground breaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing. The Baltic Sea region has great possibilities for establishing the MSC concept. In late 2010, the MSC opened an Office for the Baltic Sea Region in Stockholm with the generous support from the Baltic Sea 2020 Foundation focusing on Sweden and Denmark. The MSC concept is now established in these countries. The MSC Baltic Sea regional programme is now seeking to further engaging with stakeholders in other countries surrounding the Baltic Sea to establish the MSC programme. The MSC acknowledges the need for a local approach and is therefore recruiting a Polish speaking Project Manager (PM) to engage with Polish stakeholders. The PM will be responsible for the delivery of the MSC s overarching aims and objectives in Poland under the supervision of the Baltic Sea Regional Manager. This will initially entail establishing contacts and relationships with key stakeholders in the fishing industry in Poland such as processors, traders, fisheries clients and fisheries management authorities, as well as with environmental NGOs. Ultimately, the PM will strive to increase the awareness about the MSC ecolabel and its credibility both with institutions and among Polish consumers, as well as to seek purchasing opportunities of MSC-certified and labelled products for consumers in Poland. The PM will be responsible for high level outreach to fisheries and commercial stakeholders, as well as government representatives and partners in the NGO community. Outreach involves presentations, workshops, press conferences, interviews, relationship building and promoting the MSC concept and certification programme to potential partners. The PM will also be expected to build Media and PR relations to build consumer awareness of the MSC. The PM will report to the Baltic Sea Regional Manager based in Stockholm and will be a part of the Baltic Sea Regional team. The PM will also work in collaboration with the other members of the European Team and MSC head office, to deliver a consistent approach to target markets around the Baltic Sea. B. Dimensions of the Role This is a consultancy position within the MSC. Sound judgement on how to prioritise and use resources available for the position s function are expected. C. Responsibilities (Key results and Outcomes) The post will contribute to a diverse range of activities to promote MSC s mission and ensure successful delivery of the BSR objectives in Poland. The PM will be responsible for high level outreach to the fishery, supply chain and market, as well as public sector, promoting the MSC brand and increasing the support for the programme across a broad range of interest groups including; fisheries and supply chain stakeholders, government representatives, retailers and foodservice companies, partners in the NGO community. Activities will include: Engaging with fisheries stakeholders: Establish and maintain relationships with fisheries organizations and associations Arrange meetings and workshops to inform potential fisheries clients/groups about the MSC Fisheries Standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. Engaging with stakeholders in the supply chain: 2
Develop and maintain contact lists for Polish commercial contacts Conduct market research and analysis, as well as developing a strategy for commercial outreach. Prepare the processing industry, including producer organisation to obtain MSC Chain of Custody for potential MSC certified Polish fisheries engaged in the programme. Conduct outreach to processors, traders, foodservice companies and retailers to inform about the MSC programme with the objectives to supply or source MSC certified seafood products. Seek commitments from commercial partners to source MSC-certified products Act as first point of enquiries about Chain of Custody and supply chain matters Engaging/Liaison with non-industry stakeholders: Responsible for engaging with fisheries government representatives Liaise and engage with engos and fisheries research institutions. Communication & Marketing: Coordinate the translation of MSC documents into Polish. Develop a Polish MSC microsite. Be the first point of contact in Poland for MSC enquiries. Coordinate MSC joint marketing campaigns with retailers and producers in Poland. Development of communication materials. Establish a list of key environmental journalists for dissemination of press materials Track and monitor press coverage in Poland. Organise press events. This position will require travelling within Poland as well as occasional travel to MSC head office in London and BSR Office in Stockholm. The consultant is also responsible for making their own travel arrangements. D. PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience Experience dealing with stakeholders at all levels. Evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators. Experience working with fisheries and partners within the seafood supply chain. Experience developing communications materials. Demonstrated excellence in preparing and delivering presentations. Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised. Must be self-motivated. Excellent project planning, work planning, personal organization, and time management skills. Technical Relevant degree. Postgraduate degree or diploma an advantage. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of qualifications. Excellent computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). 3
Knowledge of third party certification schemes and the role of eco-labelling an advantage. Communication Bilingual in Polish and English. The ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken Polish and English. Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme by stakeholders around the world. The post holder will need be a strategic thinker, able to grasp complex and intellectually challenging ideas and communicate them to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Personal Skills Willingness and enthusiasm to contribute to MSC-wide responsibilities and development, where appropriate, in pursuit of the MSC s mission and vision. A friendly personality and the clear capacity to engage with staff at all levels. The post holder will need to be bright, confident and people centred and able to develop excellent working relationships and partnerships with existing and new contacts.
