This document does not form part of the terms and conditions, but aims to give you more information about the role, its context and an outline of the work you could be involved with. Background to The Scout Association s Headquarters The UK headquarters of The Scout Association is based at Gilwell Park, Chingford, London, and is operationally divided into four directorates: Outline of Role: To own and develop the Digital Strategy including delivery of the strategy through the team and across the staff and volunteer base. To manage and oversee all aspects of digital content, platforms and output. This will be achieved through the successful management of a team to ensure resources are deployed effectively and efficiently. 4 Job Description: Digital Communications Manager JOB TITLE: Digital Communications Manager DIRECTORATE: Marketing and Communications REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, LOCATION: Gilwell Park Digital and Volunteer Communications NUMBER OF JOB HOLDERS: 1 DIRECT REPORTS: 1 DATE OF JOB DESCRIPTION: Dec TSA RANGE: Band G, Level COMPETENCY LEVEL: 3 1. PURPOSE OF THE JOB To own and develop the Digital Strategy including delivery of the strategy through the team and across the staff and volunteer base. To manage and oversee all aspects of digital content, platforms and output. This will be achieved through the successful management of a team to ensure resources are deployed effectively and efficiently. 2. DIRECTORATE/DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW To support the achievement of Marketing and Communications Strategy objectives Working as part of the Marketing and Communications Directorate, you will primarily be responsible for the management of the digital communication output to staff, external contacts and the wider Scouting movement. Digital Communications Own and further develop The Scout Association (TSA) Digital Strategy Own and develop Digital Brand Guidelines, in line with TSA overall Brand Guidelines Support content owners, manage content owner process and system Day to day management of digital platforms and their content including: o TSA website o Subsidiaries and arm-length web sites o Intranet and members areas o Delivery of E-communications with internal and external audiences o Content syndication incl. YouTube o Supporting Marketing team manage Pay Per Click o o Search Engine Optimisation Delivering digital communications to planned corporate themes, enabling integrated communications campaigns across all channels Utilising content provided by owners and generating content e.g. podcasts. Delivery of tools and micro-sites, as specified by internal customers; account management and scheduling Support and develop income generation through digital output

5 To develop and provide more tools including web/sites pages for local Groups, and provide advice on digital communications to the wider Movement Work with colleagues in editorial and design teams to support design elements and generate additional content for digital outputs. Bringing into TSA innovation and best practice Communicate the diversity of Scouting and ensure all Scouting communications are accessible (shared with all senior managers in Directorate) This role requires close working with the IT team who provide all development and back end support. 3. DETAILS OF ANY LIMITS/AUTHORITY LEVELS/SUPERVISION OF STAFF Responsible for all aspects of both human and financial resources in relation to the Digital Communications team. Directly managing 1 x Digital Communications Executive 4. QUANTITIVE DIMENSIONS OF THE JOB Budget: Digital Communications expenditure budget c 30k, plus delivery to budgets held by internal clients. Opportunity to develop business cases to request funding for future development projects. Staff Digital Communications Executive x 1 Key Relationships: Assistant Director Digital and Volunteer Communications, Internal Communications Manager, Marketing Manager, Editorial and Design Manager, Creative and Brand Advisor, Business Systems Manager, and Head of IT. Also internal clients and content owners. 5. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Further develop and implement TSA Digital Strategy Day to day management of digital platforms and their content Delivery of digital output to internal customer requirements To advise, support and provide tools for use of digital mediums by local Scouting Support content owners, manage process and systems % of time Spent (Non - manag erial) 30% 25% 20% 15% 10%

6 6. MAJOR CHALLENGES (managers only - not obligatory) - Managing staff through period of change - To keep up to date with new and changing technologies. 7. OTHER INFORMATION - Occasional unsocial hours working, including weekends and evenings. - Occasional travel required, including overnights. Person Specification E = Essential HD = Highly Desirable D = Desirable KNOWLEDGE Educated to degree level, ideally in relevant subject. E Knowledge of the digital media industry. E Good knowledge and understanding of Content Management Systems, ideally the Umbraco system. E Knowledge of maximising digital platforms for corporate presence E Knowledge of how to support local element of organisation through advice, practical tools and training. E Knowledge of operating culture in the charity sector. HD Good understanding of developing content for mobile and tablet devices HD Basic knowledge of HTML. HD EXPERIENCE At least four years work in the digital media industry. E At least three years experience of leading creation and implementation of digital strategy. E Substantial experience and demonstrable success in managing and delivering large and complex online projects. E Experience of developing and implementing corporate strategy for digital outputs E Experience of maximising digital platforms for corporate presence E Experience of delivering to internal clients needs, and balancing the delivery of the corporate programme with client requirements E Experience of managing a digital team, of at least two people. E Experience of conducting reviews and appraisals, and developing staff. E Budget management. E Knowledge and experience of dealing with data protection and internet protocol/protection issues. HD Experience of leading creation and delivery of digital material for young people. D SKILLS People management skills including the ability to motivate and inspire, driving

7 development and performance. E Sound strategic thinking, project management and planning skills. E Ability to provide and accept creative direction, advice and support, including articulate concepts and briefs. E Able to work well under pressure, and manage multiple priorities. E Excellent communication skills including diplomacy, promotional writing and delivering oral presentations. E To keep current skills/knowledge relevant and up to date. E Ability to use Microsoft packages (outlook, word, excel, PowerPoint). E

8 What s in it for me? Annual Salary: Starting salary non negotiable at 36,305 (including OLW) which represents Level 1 of Band B with the possibility to increase on an annual incremental basis by 1 level (subject to satisfactory performance), to a maximum of Level 5 42,401. Salaries are paid monthly by direct transfer on or about the 20 th of the month. Overtime is not paid although time of in lieu may be authorised. Hours of Work: 35 hours per week Location: Gilwell Park, Chingford Holiday Entitlement: 23 days per year plus bank holidays. This increases after two years service to 26 days and after five years to 30 days. Probationary Period: This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period. Being a member of the Health Club and Wellbeing Scheme gives you and your family access to the lowest corporate membership rates at over 2,000 health clubs, gyms and leisure centres across the UK. Food and Drink Free lunch is provided to all employees when they are working at Gilwell Park, between Monday and Friday. Alternative arrangements are in place for staff at our Scout Activity Centres. Free beverages are available at all sites. This benefit is available immediately upon taking up employment. Looking after your future Pension For all employees, the Association has a Group Personal Pension Plan. This plan allows employees to contribute a minimum of 1.5% of their gross salary up to the maximum allowed within HMRC limits. The Association will contribute twice the employee s contribution, up to a maximum of 10% of gross salary.

9 Life Assurance All employees are covered by a scheme which pays two times the basic salary in the event of death in service. Getting to and from work Interest free season ticket loan Employees may apply for a loan to assist with the purchase of a travel season ticket. The loan will be paid back monthly by automatic deduction from salary. Car parking All sites offer free car parking to employees Cycle to Work scheme This scheme is a form of salary sacrifice which enables employees to purchase a bicycle through the Government s Cycle to Work Scheme and can save you up to 50% on the retail value (depending on the employees tax bracket). Minibus Service (Gilwell Park) A minibus service is provided which collects colleagues at 08:40 and 08:50 from Chingford Station and drops off to the same location at 17:00 hours. Making your money go that little bit further Scout Shops purchase Employees can make purchases from Scout Shops LTD with a discount of 25% on certain items, excluding uniforms. Restaurant discount card This discount card is in conjunction with TasteCard and allows a range of discounts (up to 50%) on a range of restaurants across the UK. This can be purchased for approximately 30. Developing yourself and others Study and volunteer leave Special leave includes paid leave for volunteering and study leave.
