Job purpose To manage digital projects, publishing workflows, and the implementation of NCVOs content strategy. 3. Dimensions Works with stakeholders across NCVO to implement NCVO s content strategy and schedule content development and publication across NCVO s suite of websites Product owner of NCVOs digital publishing systems and production processes, ensuring they remain fit for purpose, and liaising with suppliers in order to do so Manages digital projects as delegated by the web manager Line manages one assistant web content editor and assigns tasks to a web content editor 4. 3 5. Main accountabilities of the post Specific responsibilities 1. Manage the NCVO s content strategy and publishing workflows Manage large content projects, such as the migration of content from one website to another Commission, schedule, develop and publish high-quality web content that meets the needs of NCVO members and other website users Determine the appropriate form and business model for content, eg premium, member only, multimedia, etc Engage with stakeholders and internal customers across NCVO to make sure content on the organisation s digital platforms meets their needs Act as an advocate for accessibility and usability standards, and for a coherent and logical suite of websites and digital services, while remaining sensitive to the requirements and goals of stakeholders Design and implement effective publishing workflows, allocating tasks and projects to the web content editor and assistant web content editor as appropriate. 2. Manage digital projects as delegated by the web manager Scope and define technical developments and enhancements, and propose appropriate action bearing in mind budgetary constraints and return on investment Project manage developments, under the supervision of the web manager, proposing the allocation of resources and prioritising as appropriate to ensure delivery of outcomes within budget, on time and to the required standards, including effective risk management and progress reporting Ensure technical developments take account of user preferences through user research, acceptance and usability testing Deputise for the web manager on projects where necessary 3. Act as product owner of NCVO s CMSs and other digital publication systems Provide support and training for colleagues Ensure these systems develop to meet the organisation s needs Liaise with suppliers of digital publishing systems 4. Line manage one assistant web content editor Motivate, support, and manage the web assistant to successfully deliver agreed objectives, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and support to do so Management of HR matters in accordance with NCVO s HR policies and devolved approach General responsibilities

4 5. Ensure that all content is optimised for search engines and is appropriately tagged to ensure users can find relevant information in a straightforward manner 6. Monitor statistical information on engagement and ROI of NCVO content, and analyse such data to inform NCVO s strategy in this regard 7. Define, and provide regular statistical reports to internal colleagues to help them understand how NCVO s digital work supports the organisation s priorities 8. Contribute ideas to the on-going development of NCVO s websites and other platforms including user research, acceptance and usability tests 9. Liaise with technical partners, in conjunction with the web manager, to ensure that user feedback drives enhancements 10. Manage all work related contacts and projects on NCVO s CRM system 6. This thriving voluntary sector and volunteer movement are essential for a better society especially in times of challenge and change. That s why, inspired and empowered by our 11,000 members, NCVO champions the voluntary sector and volunteering. We do this by connecting, representing and supporting voluntary organisations, from the smallest community groups to the largest charities. The volunteering and development department is led by the executive director of volunteering and development and is of one of four departments at NCVO. It comprises three functions: digital and communications team; infrastructure development team; and volunteering development unit. The digital and communications team leads and develops NCVO s digital and online work, including: management of web development (across a broad range of websites) online content strategy online engagement culture and practices digital literacy, skills and confidence across the organisation communications campaign planning across and social media

5 The team leads and develops other communications functions, including: development and use of NCVO s brand, including brand positioning, visual identity and tone of voice commissioning and production of publications (both print and digital) management and/or sign off all design projects implementation of a new CRM system (2013/14). The other three departments are enterprise; volunteering and development; and planning and resources. NCVO is an Investor in People and Positive about Disabled People. 7. Autonomy and decision-making The post holder has day to day responsibility for implementing NCVO s content strategy, scheduling and prioritising the development and publication of content across NCVO s suite of websites. The post holder is responsible for managing their own workload, in collaboration with other members of the digital and communications team and within the context of NCVO s strategic priorities. The post holder is also responsible for designing and implementing effective publishing workflows, and will therefore allocate tasks and projects to the web content editor and assistant web content editor as appropriate. The post holder will manage digital projects as delegated by the web manager. The post holder ensures that all expenditure related to content publication and digital projects is managed within the agreed budget and adheres to NCVO s financial management practices. 8. Communications The post holder communicates both internally and externally with a wide range of people and organisations, and will often be the key point of contact for the development and publication of NCVO web content. Internal The post holder has a responsibility to manage the publication process and scheduling of content on NCVO s suite of websites. They will liaise with stakeholders from across the organisation to ensure that content meets institutional needs, and will also advocate for the target audience and for best-practice in the development of online content.

6 The post holder works closely with the rest of the digital and communications team to ensure consistency across all of NCVO s websites. External The post holder liaises externally with content creators, consultants and other users in the creation of, and engagement with NCVO content. The post holder acts as product owner and super user of NCVOs digital publication systems, and liaises with the suppliers of these systems to ensure they are maintained and remain fit for purpose. 9. Main areas of difficulty The post holder is working within a changing environment with multiple internal stakeholders. Scheduling and prioritising the publication of content will involve keeping stakeholders informed and, at times, prioritising the needs of one area of the organisation over another, which will need to be handled transparently and with diplomacy. NCVO has a wide range of websites, digital services, and other presences online, and the post holder will act as a champion of the target audience and for usability and best practice in online content. There is a need to ensure the NCVO s suite of digital services remains coherent, consistent and accessible. The post holder will be required to advise colleagues on how best to achieve their goals, while being sensitive to the needs and priorities of stakeholders. The post holder will manage digital projects, which may be complex either technically, in terms of user requirements, or both. The post holder is responsible for the quality of content that is often created by other NCVO staff. Tact and diplomacy will be required in working effectively to ensure quality. 10. Essential knowledge and skills required Knowledge 1. Educated to degree level, or experience that demonstrates equivalent ability to analyse information 2. Knowledge and understanding of the voluntary sector 3. Excellent up-to-date grasp of online technologies and the effective use of them, including architecture and navigation, and usability issues and techniques Skills

7 4. Developing and refining digital publishing workflows 5. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, including explaining technical concepts to a non-technical audience 6. Ability to keep up to date with changing software and systems, and support colleagues in the use of these systems 7. Managing multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment 8.
