London Allowance Fixed Term for 3 years Project Principal Investigator An agreed programme of research Job Summary: The Post-Doctoral Researcher Officer will conduct primary research in the Arab world (and specifically the Arabian Peninsula) for the project Military Mobilities and Mobilising Movements funded by the UK s Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC). Research duties will include conducting face-to-face interviews, qualitative data entry and analysis and research in various archives (news media, business, etc) in relation to the social, economic, labour, business and political impacts of shipping and logistics infrastructure construction and commercial practice. The candidate will be based at SOAS in London, however the project will involve periods of overseas travel for fieldwork in the Arabian Peninsula. Key Tasks: Conduct literature searches and contribute to literature reviews; Contribute to research design; Collect qualitative data from fieldwork as well as some quantitative data such as from business databases, IMF and WorldBank, and government sources; Conduct face-to-face interviews with key stakeholder groups involved in transport infrastructure and construction, including business, government officials, and workers; Prepare draft working papers, reports and papers for peer-reviewed publications in international journals; Manage research data collected from interviews and other sources; Contribute to the analysis of research data; including by using narrative analysis; Use qualitative data analysis software; Liaise with other relevant project stakeholders such as the International Transport Workers Federation, other organisations and the media, where appropriate; Contribute to the writing of routine progress reports to the project funding agency;

2 Lead the organisation of team meetings, events and workshops for the project, including helping to organise travel arrangements and helping to make enquiries and bookings; Participate in the dissemination of research outcomes and recommendations, including attending and presenting at workshops and conferences; Contribute to the creation and maintenance of the project web site; Performing other duties occasionally, which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role and the work of the project team; Contribute to the research culture of the Department of Politics and International Studies You will be working with the Principal Investigator for the project at SOAS, Professor Laleh Khalili. In addition, you will be working with researchers at the International Transport Workers Federation, who will be a beneficiary of the project. You will be based at SOAS in London, however the project will involve periods of overseas travel for fieldwork in the Arabian Peninsula and conference attendance in Europe and overseas. You will be supervised by the Principal Investigator. However you need to be able to work independently when you are away or when the PI is away. You will be expected to set up the project together with the Principal Investigator in the first few months of the project. You will need to be confident of managing the project, your share of the research budget and the on-going activities and communications with the project partners without much supervision during the Principal Investigator s absence. You will also have opportunities to interact with other researchers within SOAS and with other project partners and collaborating organisations. You will be encouraged to attend relevant research meetings, seminars and training/staff development opportunities within and beyond SOAS. Competency and Evidence Communication Oral: Be able to conduct face-to-face interviews with a range of interlocutors (business, government, labour, etc.) in the Arabian Peninsula. Respond to verbal queries from SOAS, the funders, the research partners in the UK as well as the overseas research partners and other project stakeholders on matters relating to the research and the project and budget management. Handle external/internal telephone requests for information about the project from a wide range of callers. Make presentations on the research at internal and external forums and conferences. Participate in discussions in meetings between the core research team and its partners. Written: Respond to written queries from SOAS, the funders, the research partners in the UK as well as the overseas research partners and other project stakeholders on matters relating to the research and the project and budget management. Write s and letters to core team members, partners and other stakeholders to communicate research activities and progress, and to timetable meetings. Contribute to the writing of routine progress reports to the project funding agency. Write and distribute minutes of team research meetings. Write working papers and reports.

3 Write academic papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals. Write other outputs related to the project such as briefings, media statements, website text, etc. Teamwork and Motivation Help with the management and conduct of the research project. Manage contact and ongoing interaction between SOAS, the research partners in the UK as well as the overseas research partners. Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the PI, partner organisations, funders, and peers and professional organisations. Collaborate for the purposes of the research with other team members and partners. Contribute to the teamwork culture of the Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS by taking part in relevant meetings and activities. Liaison and Networking Frequent liaison with research team and partners on project activities. Build up contacts with project stakeholders and relevant professional networks. Make contact with other comparable projects and research groups. Manage contact and ongoing interaction between SOAS, the research partners in the UK as well as the overseas research partners, and respond to queries. Help to manage and oversee the project budget, including liaising with relevant SOAS research office and finance staff as well as the funding organisation ESRC. Lead the organisation of team meetings, events and workshops for the project, including helping to organise travel arrangements and helping to make enquiries and bookings. Contribute to the creation and maintenance of the project web site. Decision Making Processes and Outcomes In consultation with the project Principal Investigator take decisions on appropriate research methods, research design, analysis of research data and analytical approaches. In consultation with the project Principal Investigator take decisions on timing of fieldwork and data collection activities. In consultation with the project Principal Investigator take decisions on publication plans. In consultation with the project Principal Investigator take decisions on dissemination and event plans. Planning and Organising Resources Help with the organisation of team meetings, events and workshops for the project, including helping to organise travel arrangements and making enquiries and bookings. Help to plan the dissemination of research outcomes and recommendations. Plan and manage fieldwork, data collection and data analysis. Manage contact and ongoing interaction between SOAS, the research partners in the UK as well as the overseas research partners, and respond to queries. Help to manage and oversee the project budget, including liaising with relevant SOAS research office and finance staff as well as the funding organisation ESRC, and managing sub-contracts with project partners. Initiative and Problem Solving Respond to day-to-day problems and contingencies in project management and implementation, for example, track missing documents or data records, liaise with partners and deal with problems arising from fieldwork and events with partners and stakeholders. Ability to help set up and troubleshoot any problems with data management, data

4 archiving and publications. Ability to help set up and troubleshoot any problems with budget management, including sub-contracts and funding reports. Be aware of the sensitivity and the political / economic interests relating to some of the data and the research activities. Be able to plan ahead and respond adequately to these challenges. Analysis and Research Carry out an agreed programme of research and analysis consisting of the following: Conduct literature searches and contribute to literature reviews. Experience in academic writing and scientific publications. Experience in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with a multidisciplinary research team, UK and overseas partner organisations, and peers and professional organisations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce drafts of joint publications for scientific journals. Experience to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Experience with meeting tight deadlines. High degree of professional judgement and integrity. Record of research experience in the Arabian Peninsula preferably (and the Arab world more broadly). Ability and willingness to travel to field work locations in the Arabian Peninsula. Competent skills and experience of working with ICT, including Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), data analysis software, for example NVivo9, and willingness to learn how to work with relational databases A research interest in the politics of transport and infrastructure issues, particularly in relation to the Middle East. Essential Qualifications: 6. A PhD in Politics, Sociology, International Relations, Geography, Anthropology, Development Studies, History or a relevant closely related discipline and have research experience in the field of political economy. Essential Personal Qualities: 7. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a small research team, UK and overseas partner organisations, and peers and professional organisations. 8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce drafts of joint publications for scientific peer-reviewed journals. 9. Ability to manage own research projects, research partners, budgets and events. 10. Self motivation and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team. 11. Ability to meet tight deadlines. 12. High degree of professional judgement and integrity. 13. Record of research experience in an Arab country, preferably on the Arabian Peninsula. 14.
