Event Invitation Dear Community Leader, On behalf of the Valley Scholars Program of South Texas College, I invite you to join us at our upcoming 9 th Annual fundraising event, A Night with the Stars. This special event scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Corinthian Banquet and Special Event Center, will be an evening of celebration, recognition, awards, and entertainment. Net proceeds from this event will benefit the Valley Scholars Program scholarships. During this event, we plan to recognize two of our valued community partners who have made significant contributions to the Valley Scholars Program. This year, the two distinguished businesses selected to be recognized as star supporters of education are Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and H-E-B. These businesses have regularly donated to the Valley Scholars Program and their contributions have made it possible for South Texas College to continue to provide financial support to many Valley students as they continue their education. Reception Entertainment Welcome Reception...6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Welcome Reception will feature a live performance from the South Texas College Music Department s Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Daniel P. Cather, STC Music Instructor. South Texas College s Music Department, through excellent teaching and service to the community, promotes an enhanced awareness of the role of music in society. The department s purpose is to provide a stimulating environment that encourages lifelong learning, promotes South Texas College Jazz Ensemble cultural awareness and enriches the quality of life in Hidalgo and Starr counties through performance and study. Daniel Cather Daniel Cather joined the STC music faculty in 2008. He received his Bachelor s and Master s degrees from Eastern Illinois University where he studied piano and composition. During his tenure at STC, Daniel started the first Electronic Music classes south of San Antonio and also launched the STC Jazz Combo. Esperanza Medina Esperanza Medina received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from UTPA. During her studies, she took part in opera workshops. She won the Concierto Vocal Competition held at UTPA in 2002 earning her a solo engagement with the Valley Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Medina has been an active member of the Valley Symphony Chorale since 2003. She is currently the Choir Director at Palmview High School in La Joya and admires how young vocalists find passion in vocal music as much as she does.
Dinner Entertainment Recognition Dinner...7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. T he evening will include a celebration with an elegant dinner, recognition, awards, and delectable desserts from South Texas College s Culinary Arts Program. Faculty and students will encompass culinary and fine arts in a firsthand demonstration of an assortment of sweet confections. Join us for A Taste of New York prepared especially for you by Culinary Arts students. The Culinary Arts Program at STC has set a goal of being recognized not just in the community, but in the country, as one of the best schools to receive a culinary education. Our faculty and staff constantly seek new opportunities to advance our program and expose our students to real world experiences. In events such as the culinary wars, a week-long series of competitions, students have an opportunity to flex their culinary muscles and demonstrate knowledge, skill and grace while under pressure. Culinary Arts students also participate in countless events outside the walls of the campus, where they can share their experience and have a positive impact in the community.

Three distinguished supporters of higher education were honored during the 8 th Annual South Texas College Valley Scholars Program s A Night with the Stars on October 10, 2013. Attendees enjoyed a night of dining and entertainment as the College saluted BBVA Compass, the City of McAllen, and Time Warner Cable Media as Star Supporters of Education. We are really proud to get this recognition from South Texas College, said Robert McDaniel, Market President for BBVA Compass. At BBVA, one of our core pillars is helping provide a better future for people, and we feel STC offers that as a major part of our community. Valley Scholars Program Valley Scholars Class XVII The Valley Scholars Program was established in 1997 through a partnership between South Texas College, members of the local community, and representatives from business and industry to recognize and promote academic excellence by providing financial assistance and leadership development opportunities to academically gifted and highly motivated students. The program recruits students who graduate within the top 10% of their high school class or obtain an average of 85 or above. The Valley Scholars Program supports its students by providing scholarships, academic assistance and mentorship, as well as encouraging service within the community, as they work toward the completion of an Associate Degree. Over the past seventeen years, more than 700 students have participated in the program and continued their education at premier universities around the state and nation. Valley Scholars Program alumni have gone on to successful careers and become leaders who are making significant contributions to their communities.
