1 Vide editing in the Bit Central Suites The Bit Central suites prvide a prfessinal, netwrked envirnment fr editing vide fr televisin newscasts. This envirnment includes inews, Premiere Pr, Bit Central s Precis system. 1. Stry Creatin (inews) When vide will be attached t a line item, an a must be typed int the BIT-C clumn in inews: Nte: inews is available in the edit suites. Duble check early n that yur stry is prperly frmatted. 2. Prject Setup (Edit Suites) Please see the Adbe Premiere Pr Initial Setup Instructins. Yu shuld have the custmized settings utlined in that manual saved t yur Adbe ID. Lg n t an edit suite cmputer using yur FCAD lgin. Duble-click n The RVR Icn n the desktp. Open the templates flder. Find the template fr yur class (ex: TrntTday, Ryersnian, etc). Nte that the template is an entire flder (nt just the Premiere Prject inside). Cpy the template flder fr yur shw, then navigate t the Prjects flder. Open yur class flder and paste the entire template flder. Rename the template flder clearly (ex FireSept25). This is nw yur prject flder. Open the flder, and duble click n the.pprj file. Frm there, click n the small Creative Clud buttn at the bttm-left f the screen. Chse Use Settings frm a Different Accunt Fllw the n-screen instructins t lgin. Premiere Pr will re-launch with yur Sync Settings. 3. Vide File Transfer **Nte: It is imprtant yu cpy all raw material frm the SD card nt the RVR. This is crucial s yu can pen yur prject frm any suite, and cllabrate with the rest f yu class n prductin elements, like headline packs. Insert yur SD Card. Cpy and paste the PRIVATE flder t yur prject flder n the RVR. What will happen if I dn t cpy the whle PRIVATE flder? These are the ptential issues: Audi drp uts, r cmplete lss f audi Red flashes in yur vide files Other file crruptin issues, including freezing Premiere Pr cmpletely. Safely remve the SD card befre yu cntinue. This will ensure that yu are wrking with the files in yur prject flder and nt directly ff the SD card. In Premiere Pr, chse File-Imprt-Files frm the tp menu, brwse t yur files in yur prject flder, and press the Imprt buttn. 2 REMEMBER: Premiere Pr imprts a LIST f files, nt the files themselves. If yu delete r discnnect frm the files, the prject will nt wrk. PLEASE ensure yu have transferred all files t yur prject flder. 4. Get t knw the Interface The Premiere Pr wrkspace cnsists f several panels: The desktp f the edit suite cmputers IS NOT a safe place fr files. If the cmputer rebts, anything saved t the cmputer will be lst. Prject files: This is where yu find the vide, audi and graphics fr yur prject. Nte that the template prvides several sequences and titles pre-made fr virtually all vide assignments. There are tw view ptins list r thumbnail. In thumbnail view, yu will als be able t see which files yu have already used, but this view makes it mre difficult t see all yur available files at nce. This panel is als searchable. Effects: This is where yu can brwse r search fr audi and vide effects and transitins. If yu have fllwed the Initial Setup instructins and are signed in with yur Sync Settings, yu shuld have a flder with yur name n it cntaining the mst cmmn effects and transitins. Surce viewer: This is where yu can mdify media befre r after it has been added t the timeline. Nested behind the is the Effect Cntrls Panel which is used fr mdifying effects and mtin ptins. Prgram viewer: This is the preview f yur final prject as it is being created. By pressing CTRL and ~, yu can maximize this panel fr a full-screen preview. Track Headers: This prtin f Sequence panel cntains the name f each track and sme track buttns. It can be custmized, and can be used t activate/deactivate tracks when using keybard shrtcuts. Timeline: This is the main prtin f Sequence panel. It is yur canvas where yu will build yur prject. VU meter: This shws yu the verall audi levels f yur prject. The headers can be custmized t include mini VU meters fr mnitr the levels n each track. Tl Panel: This is where yu can select tls t mdify clips in the timeline. Mst tls als have a keybard shrtcut. 3 5. Get t knw the Sequence Panel The Sequence panel cntains the timeline where yu will create yur prject. Here is sme useful infrmatin abut using this panel. Track Headers Premiere Pr defaults t three vide tracks, and several audi tracks. Ntice that a vide file will appear n a vide track and 2 audi tracks (with left and right audi channels). Yu are nt likely t need mre than the default tracks, and adding mre ften adds cnfusin rather than helping. Hwever, if yu wish t add mre tracks, simply click and drag a clip abve the tp vide track r belw the audi master track and a new vide r audi track will appear. Click and drag the tp edges f yur tracks t expand r cntract their height. This can be useful when editing audi wavefrms. Beside each track are buttns. The eye/speaker buttns will hide/mute a track. The next buttn is a sync lck buttn (sync lck is the default ptin, s audi and vide will remain in sync unless these buttns are turned ff). The final buttn is a lck ptin. When clicked, a padlck icn will appear and yu will nt be able t mve r mdify anything n the lcked track. There are pull-dwn arrws t the right f the track buttns that reveal mre infrmatin (see the Vide 1 and Audi 1 tracks in the image abve). This is als hw yu will be able t view the audi wavefrm. The Timeline T play the timeline, press the space bar. Press it again t stp. T g t a specific spt n the timeline, click and drag the cursr n the ruler at the tp f the panel. T zm in and ut, click and drag the ends f the scrllbar at the bttm f the timeline. Other Cntrls At the tp-left f the timeline windw yu will see yellw numbers that represent the time cde where yu cursr is currently psitined. Underneath the time cde display, there is a buttn with a magnet icn. This is a snapping ptin. When yu drag the cursr alng the timeline with this ptin active, it will be attracted t the beginning and ends f clips, as well as any key frames. 6. Edit yur Prject Basic Vide There are several ways t apprach the editing prcess. The fllwing are best practices fr editing vide under tight deadlines: There are tw appraches t adding clips (r media files) t the timeline. Click and drag shrter clips frm the Prject panel nt the timeline in the rder yu wish them t play, then using the instructins belw, yu can fine-tune the edit. Duble-click n lnger clips in the Prject Panel t lad them int the Surce Viewer. Using the htkeys I and O, select an in-pint and an ut-pint fr the sectin yu wish t use. Click and drag the preview image t the timeline, r click n either the audi r vide buttn belw the image t add just the audi r vide. The default tl is the Selectin Tl (the traditinal arrw cursr). If yu change tls, yu will want t return t the selectin tl t cntinue editing. T d this, click n the black arrw in the tlbar panel r use the htkey V There are tw ptins when arranging clips n the timeline. An verwrite edit ccurs when yu click and drag a clip ver anther clip. This erases any verlapping material frm the timeline. If yu hld Ctrl as yu click and drag a clip t the timeline, it will push the clips apart and make rm fr the new clip, which is knwn as an insert edit. 4 Here are three ways t edit the in-pints and ut-pints f clips alng the timeline: Click and drag the ends f clips t trim the beginning r end. Select the clip by clicking n it. Place the cursr at the desired cut pint, and then press CTRL+K t cut the clip int pieces. Alternatively, use the razr tl frm the tl panel (htkey C ) t cut a clip int pieces. T get rid f a gap n the timeline, right-click n the gap and select Ripple Delete A vide clip placed n vide track 2 will visually verride a clip n track 1, track 3 will verride tracks 2 and 1, etc Only use anther track when necessary. Hlding dwn the alt key as yu click n a clip n the timeline allws yu t select the audi r vide fr that clip separately. A split edit is a very cmmn and effective technique that makes fr a smther edit, allwing the viewer t hear the audi frm the next clip briefly befre the visuals change. Here is a simple way t achieve this: Press the htkey N t switch t the rll trim tl Click n the edit pint alng the vide track t select it Hld dwn the ALT key and click and drag the vide frward n the timeline by abut ne t tw secnds. Press the htkey V t return t the Selectin Tl 7. Edit yur Prject Mixing Audi Several audi surces are ften layered t get the desired result (music, ambient sund, vice-ver, etc). The verall utput shuld peek at abut -10. Watch the VU meter n the bttm-right f the screen fr the verall utput, and use the track VU meters t mnitr each track. There are tw ways t adjust audi levels: Audi Gain: T quickly adjust the verall audi level f a clip, right-click n the clip and chse Audi Gain In the bx that pps up, type in a new value beside Adjust Gain By: Start by adjusting the gain by 5 decibel increments. T lwer the audi level, type in a negative value (i.e. -5 ). Play the timeline and watch the VU meter t ensure yu have the desired levels. If nt, adjust again by adding r subtracting decibel increments as needed. Using the Pen tl: Duble-click the audi track header that crrelates t the clip yu wish t adjust. This will pen the wavefrm view. Select the pen tl frm the tl palette, r use the htkey P T change the levels f an entire clip with this tl, click and drag up r dwn n the thin white line that appears n the audi clip. T create a fade within a clip, add key frames alng the audi clip. With the pen tl selected, click at the pint at which yu wish the fade t begin. Add a secnd key frame where yu wish the fade t end. Click and drag the key frames up r dwn t create a fade. Click and drag the diamnd-shaped fade cntrl pints that will appear if yu need t adjust. T delete a fade cntrl pint, select it (the pint will turn yellw) and press the Delete key. Use the htkey V t return t the selectin tl when yu are dne. 5 8. Edit yur Prject Using Transitins Vide Disslve The crss-disslve transitin can be used t create a either fade r disslve. A disslve is when tw images blend ver time t create a subtle transitin. A fade is when an image disappears int a clur. Here is hw they will appear n the timeline: Type disslve int the search field in the Effects panel, and click and drag the Crss Disslve t the end f a clip t make a fade, r between tw clips n the same track t make a disslve. T adjust the length, click and drag the end f the effect. T remve it, click n the effect, and press the delete key. Audi Crssfade Similar t the disslve transitin, the crssfade transitin can be used t create an audi fade r crssfade. A fade is when an audi clip fades in at the start r ut and the end. A crssfade is when tw audi clips blend ver time t create a subtle transitin. Fr an audi crssfade, type cnstant int the search field in the Effects panel, then click and drag the Cnstant Gain between tw audi clips. T adjust the length, click and drag the end f the effect. T remve it, click n the effect, and press the delete key. Other Transitins The simplest way t find a particular transitin is t type its name int the search field at the tp f the panel. Fr example, fr a wipe, simply type wipe int the search bar and all available wipe transitins will appear. If yu click n a transitin, yu can mdify the effect (ex: change the directin f a wipe) in the Effects Cntrl panel. 9. Add Vicevers Turn dwn the speakers in the edit suite. Make sure the pre-amp (black bx) is turned n. Place the play head alng the timeline where yu wuld like t start the vicever Nte: the vicever shuld start at least three secnds after the beginning f the vide n the timeline. Leaving this space is called padding. Chse an empty audi track, r right-click the audi header and select Add Track t make a new ne. Right-click n the grey area f the header beside the empty audi track and chse Vice Over Settings In the windw that pps up, use the VU meter t set yur levels. Speak int the mic and adjust the levels using the knb n the pre-amp if necessary. Clse the windw. When yu are ready t recrd, click the micrphne buttn in the header beside the empty audi track. There will be a three secnd cuntdwn n the Prgram Viewer panel. Once it reaches 0, begin recrding the vicever. Ntice that the recrding nw appears alng the timeline, and the file has been placed in the Prject panel. Listen t the mix make sure that the vicever is clear and easy t hear ver the backgrund sund in the vide clips. Adjust as needed using the techniques in step 7 f this manual. 6 10. Add Titles As part f the template, there is a bin cntaining title templates fr yur class newscast in the Prject Panel. Frm the Prject panel, pen the Title Templates bin. Find the template yu wish t use. Click and drag it t a vide track n the timeline. If yu are creating a lwer third, place the title n a vide track abve the vide yu are referencing. Duble click n the title in the timeline t pen the Titler. Press T n the keybard t ensure yu are using the Type Tl. Click n the placehlder text and replace it with yur text. Ensure yu fllw the frmatting fr example when using the Lwer Thirds template, the name shuld be all caps, title in title case. Click the x at the tp right t clse the windw it will autmatically save the changes. Add fades t the beginning and end f yur titles using the Crss Disslve transitin. T make anther title using the same template, select the first title yu made n the timeline and ALT-drag it frward t the next lcatin (DO NOT COPY/PASTE!). Yu nw have a duplicate f the riginal title. Duble click n the duplicate title t pen the Titler and replace the text as needed. 11. Send Vide t the Studi fr Playut (Attach t Rundwn) *Befre attaching t Precis, delete any extra material at the end f the timeline.* *This step can nly be dne frm a Bit Central edit suite.* In inews, duble check that yur stry is in the lineup, and an a has been typed int the BIT-C clumn. In Premiere Pr, save yur prject (CTRL+S). Click n the sequence panel t ensure it is active. Chse File-Exprt-Attach t Rundwn frm the tp menu. In the windw that pps up, select yur lineup. Yur item s slug shuld appear in the list. Be very careful t select yur item s slug then click the Attach buttn. Premiere will then encde and send yur file t the playback system. Wait befre checking that yur file sent t the studi prperly, wait until the prcess is cmplete in the suite and add abut three mre minutes fr prcessing. If yu make changes and need t resend, simply repeat the steps abve t the same slug. NOTE: If yu d resend, DO NOT CANCEL nce the prcess starts, r nly a partial vide will play back. 7 12. Check the Precis Web Page T duble-check that yur item is successfully attached t the playback system, yu can use the Precis web page. There is a shrtcut n the desktp f every lab cmputer and every edit suite, r, if yu are lgged nt RU secure, yu can find it at n yur wn laptp. Yu will be prvided with the lgin infrmatin in the editing wrkshp. See the technical staff if yu frget. Once yu are lgged in, yu can navigate t yur lineup frm the list n the left, click n the camera buttn at the tp-right, and select yur slug frm the lineup t view a preview versin f yur item (nte: it may appear slightly cut-ff due t the dimensins f the preview player, but this des nt affect hw it will play in studi) 13. Exprt yur prject as a vide file When yu cmplete an item, yu may als chse t exprt tw files ne high quality, and ne web-quality. The web quality versin can be used n any f the schl s websites. Save yur prject (CTRL+S). Click n the sequence panel t ensure it is active. Frm the tp menu, chse File-Exprt-Media. In the windw that pps up, chse H.264 as the frmat. Fr submitting fr marking, chse Match Surce - Medium Bitrate as the preset. Fr uplading t YuTube r fr the CA package in JRN314, chse Match Surce High Bitrate. Fr uplad directly t Wrdpress, yu need a special imprted preset. Fr assistance, see the technical staff. Click n the blue writing beside Output Name. This brings yu t a brwser windw where yu can select where t save and rename the file. Make sure yu are saving t yur prject flder t start. Click the Exprt buttn at the bttm f the screen t exprt ne file at a time. T exprt tw versins at nce, yu can click the Queue buttn at the bttm f the screen. This will pen the Adbe Media Encder where yu can duplicate the exprt and change the preset. Then, press the green arrw at the tp-right f the screen t begin exprting bth files. D nt clse Premiere Pr until the prcess is cmplete. Befre yu leave Place cpies f yur finished vide in yur Hme flder n the netwrk, r n a USB strage device. Clean up any papers, pens, etc remember cleaning staff d nt regularly clean the edit suites. Make sure yu discnnect any external devices (including cameras, USB drives, SD cards ) and return any brrwed equipment d nt leave anything unattended. Make sure yu lg ut f the cmputer yu are using.
