Users with little t mderate knwledge f cmputers shuld be able t use this tutrial. The tutrial details hw t set up a cmputer t accept a remte desktp cnnectin and hw t cnnect t that cmputer using the remte desktp cnnectin n anther cmputer. It is imprtant t nte that the cmputer yu will be cnnecting t must have Windws XP Prfessinal, Windws Vista Business r Windws Vista Ultimate. The cmputer yu will be cnnecting frm can have any f these versins r a hme versin f Windws. This tutrial shws hw t use remte desktp ver yur hme netwrk. I d nt shw yu hw t use remte desktp t cnnect t a machine that is nt cnnected t yur hme netwrk. Yu may ask, why wuld I need t cnnect t anther cmputer in my wn hme? Well, yu can maintain all f yur hme cmputers frm ne lcatin instead f running arund t all f thse cmputers. Yu can mnitr yur netwrk activity, including yur children s cmputers. If yu have nly ne license fr a prgram, yu can access that prgram by using remte desktp t access the cmputer with the prgram installed. Whatever the applicatin f use, Remte Desktp is explained here. Required Equipment: One cmputer with ne f the fllwing perating systems Windws XP Prfessinal Windws Vista Business Windws Vista Ultimate A secnd cmputer with any f the fllwing perating systems Windws XP Hme Windws XP Prfessinal Windws Vista Hme Basic Windws Vista Hme Premium Windws Vista Business Windws Vista Ultimate Wired r Wireless Ruter Bth cmputers must be cnnected wirelessly r wired t this ruter

3 Remte Desktp Tutrial Virginia Ginny Mrris Page 3 Sectin 1: Setting up the cmputer yu will be cnnecting t Befre yu can cnnect t a cmputer using remte desktp, yu must make sme changes t that cmputer s set-up. Yu must have a user accunt with a passwrd n that cmputer, and yu must tell that cmputer that it can accept remte cnnectins. Yu als need t knw the IP address f the cmputer yu will be cnnecting t. Step 1: The Cntrl Panel 1. Open the cntrl panel by ging t the start menu and clicking Cntrl Panel r click the Cmputer icn and click Cntrl Panel 2. Select Classic View in the tp left hand crner f the cntrl panel 3. Select User Accunts.

If yu d nt have an accunt n the machine, select Manage User Accunts then Create an Accunt. Fllw the prmpts t create an accunt and passwrd. 4. G back t the cntrl panel and select System. Within this screen, yu can tell what versin f windws yu are using. Vista users shuld select Advanced System Settings. If the UAC (User Accunt Cntrl) asks if yu wuld like t prceed, select yes. a. Select the remte tab b. Select the ptin that allws cmputers t cnnect t yur cmputer thrugh remte desktp c. Click Select Users. If yur user accunt is nt listed, click add and add yur user name t the list. d. Press OK until yu are back t the cntrl panel and clse the cntrl Panel Step 2: Cmmand Prmpt 1. G t the Start Menu, Select Run, Type cmd and press enter 2. In the cmmand prmpt windw, type ipcnfig (withut qutatins) and press enter. 3. Scrll up until yu find the IPv4 Address 4. Write dwn the address and clse the windw. 5. Lg ut f the cmputer but d nt turn it ff.

G t the Start Menu, Select All Prgrams, Select Accessries, then Select Remte Desktp Cnnectin 2. Type the IP Address that yu wrte dwn earlier int the dialgue bx. Press enter. 3. Yu may be asked if yu trust the remte cnnectin, select yes r cnnect.

Yu can use this machine just as yu wuld yur lcal desktp. 6. T exit, either press the X at the tp f the windw r g the start menu and select lg ff. Sectin 3: Remte Desktp Additinal Optins (ptinal) Display: Gives the user the ptin f pening the remte desktp windw in full screen mde r n a prtin f yur desktp. Users can als select clr ptins. Lcal Resurces: Allws users t munt lcal printers, the clipbard, lcal drives, USB and plug and play devices t the remte cmputer. This is useful because yu can share files between the cmputers, cpy and paste between the cmputers, and print frm the remte cmputer. Prgrams: Allws a user t pen a prgram upn lgin t the remte machine. Experience: Gives the user different ptins based n their cnnectin speed. Since remte desktp wrks ver yur netwrk cnnectin, the mre ptins yu select, the slwer remte desktp can ptentially be. Advanced: Gives ptins fr server authentificatin and Cnnect frm Anywhere. I d nt suggest using these ptins unless yu are a mre advanced user.
