1 Article ID: 1449 Q&A Dial Backup fr Dedicated T1 Circuits using the ATLAS Q: Dial Backup fr Dedicated T1 Circuits using the ATLAS A: Intrductin This technical supprt nte describes hw t cnfigure the ATLAS 550/800 PLUS /810 PLUS /830/890 fr ISDN dial backup f a dedicated T1 circuit. The ATLAS 550/800 PLUS /810 PLUS /830/890 can be cnfigured t either riginate r answer an ISDN call when a failure cnditin is detected n the T1. Befre Yu Begin This applicatin requires an ATLAS 800 PLUS /810 PLUS with firmware revisin F.02 r later, and an ATLAS 550 must have firmware revisin B.01 r later. Please nte that an ATLAS 800 (Part Number L1 r L1) des nt have the capability f dial backup fr dedicated circuits. A V.35Nx mdule (Part Number L1) r USSI mdule (Part Number L1, L2 r L3) will need t be installed in the ATLAS 800 Plus. A V.35Nx mdule (Part Number L1) will need t be installed in the ATLAS 550. If bnding f B-channels is required fr the applicatin, the IMUX mdule (Part Number L1 fr ATLAS 800 PLUS /810 PLUS, L1 fr ATLAS 550) will als need t be installed. Hw Dial Backup Wrks The ATLAS 550/800 PLUS /810 PLUS will either riginate r answer a dial backup call upn detectin f a netwrk failure r netwrk/data failure n the T1. A netwrk failure is any physical layer T1 failure, such as red alarm r lss f signal. A netwrk/data failure is detected when the ATLAS n lnger receives keep-alive respnses ver the 8K inband channel. The netwrk/data criteria fr dial backup can nly be used when cnfigured t mnitr the inband channel. Fr the purpses f this technical nte, the netwrk diagram

2 in Figure 1 will be used as an example (Nte: In this example, the TSU 120 has a NxDBU mdule installed. This dcument des nt detail hw t cnfigure the TSU r the ISU.) Cnfiguring the Dedicated Map Figure 1 1. Telnet int the ATLAS (r cnnect directly thrugh the Cntrl/Chain In prt) and g t Dedicated Maps, Create/Edit Maps, then Cnnects. In FROM Slt and Prt, press enter and select the apprpriate V.35Nx mdule and prt number. NOTE: It is imprtant fr this applicatin that the V.35Nx endpint be placed in the FROM Slt clumn and nt the TO Slt clumn psitin. 2. In TO Slt and Prt/PEP, press enter and select the T1/PRI mdule and prt number t which the V.35Nx shuld be crss-cnnected. 3. Press enter n Frm Cnfig and anther menu will be displayed. Press enter n DSO Rate and select the T1 DS0 channel rate, either 56K r 64K. Press escape t return t the Cnnects menu. 4. Press enter n T Cnfig and anther menu will be displayed. Press enter n DS0 Selectin and enter the range f channels t be mapped n that T1; fr example, channels ne thrugh eighteen wuld be represented as Press escape t return t the Cnnects menu. Figure 2 shws hw the Cnnects menu shuld appear nce cnfigured.

Frm the main menu (press 'H' t return t the main menu frm anywhere) g t Dial Plan, Netwrk Term and enter n the Slt and Prt ptins t select the apprpriate mdule and prt. This will be the primary T1 cming frm the telephne cmpany. (Fr mre infrmatin n when t use Netwrk Term versus User Term, see the ATLAS FAQs.) Figure 3 shws the Dial Plan entry fr a PRI cnnected t slt 0, prt 1.

4 Figure 3 2. Next, yu will set up the backup entry in the User Term. Use the arrws n yur keybard t navigate the cursr t the User Term and press enter. Fr the Slt field, yu will select CKT Backup. The Prt field will nly allw yu t select V.35 r USSI prts that were entered n the FROM Slt field in the Dedicated Map. Select the apprpriate prt that yu wish t use. This is the prt that will be backed up if a failure ccurs n the T1. Figure 4 shws the entry fr the Circuit Backup.

5 Figure 4 3. The next step is t cnfigure the Ifce Cfg ptins. These include the DBU parameters. Navigate t the Ifce Cfg ptin and press enter. This will take yu t a different screen. The fllwing ptins are available here. Originate/Answer: If yu wish fr the ATLAS t be the riginate side, yu shuld set this ptin t Originate. The ther chices are Answer r Answer Always. Outging Call Type: Yur chices are Digital 64 r Digital 56 and shuld be set accrding t the type call yu are trying t make. Surce ID: The surce ID shuld remain at 0 unless yu have specified a surce ID elsewhere in the prgramming. Outdial Number: This field shuld cntain the number yu want the ATLAS t dial t g int backup. Frce Mde: Optins are Aut, Frced r Disable. This ptin shuld be left at Aut unless yu want t either frce DBU all the time, r disable DBU t never be active. Backup Criteria: Optins are Net/Data Fail, Net Fail r Manual. Net/Data Fail: DBU is initiated when either the netwrk fails (pssible causes include Red, Yellw, Blue, r LOS alarms) r when the Nx56/64 mdule detects a lss f data transitins n the V.35 interface. If Net/Data Fail is selected, the V.35 Nx INBAND ptin must be ON. The remte TSU INBAND ptin must als be enabled. Net Fail: DBU is initiated when there is a netwrk failure. Pssible causes include LOS, RED, Yellw, r Blue alarms.

6 Manual: The ATLAS will never initiate DBU until it is manually set t d s. Restre Criteria: Manual Only is the nly ptin available when Backup Criteria is set fr NET/DATA FAIL. When Backup Criteria is set t NET FAIL, then NET SUCCESS may be selected s that data is autmatically switched back t the main circuit when the netwrk alarm clears. Startup Delay: Length f time (in secnds) that determines hw lng t wait befre implementing the DBU capabilities after being cnfigured. Backup Delay: Length f time (in secnds) that determines hw lng the T1 must be in a fail state befre dial backup will take affect. Restre Delay: Length f time (in secnds) that determines hw lng the main circuit must be restred befre the DBU will switch ff. Max Number f Retries: Optins are Nne, 3, 10, and Unlimited. This is the number f times the ATLAS will redial if first DBU cnnectin fails. Redial Timer: Length f time (in secnds) that determines hw lng t wait befre retry. Enable Schedule: This ptin will take yu t a different screen where yu can cnfigure times that yu will allw (r nt allw) the ATLAS t g int DBU mde. Test Call: Optins include Hurly, Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, r manual nly. The ATLAS can be set t autmatically place a DBU test call at any ne f these times. If yu d nt wish fr the ATLAS t use this feature, select Manual Only. Min DS0s: Specifies the minimum number f DS0s t use fr DBU. This ptin shuld be set t 1 unless yu are trying t place a bnded call. Bnding requires that the IMUX mdule be installed in the ATLAS. Max DS0s: Specifies the maximum number f DS0s t use fr DBU. The valid range fr this field is The Ifce Cfg ptins will resemble Figure 5 when set fr Originate:

8 Figure 6 Circuit Status It is pssible t mnitr the status f the dial backup circuit. Frm the main menu, select Circuit Status. The Frm clumn shws the circuits that have been cnfigured fr backup. The Man field allws the user t manually frce backup (FB), r restre the circuit t regular (FR). The Line Status shws the status f the backup line. Pssible values and descriptins f these values can be viewed by highlighting the entry and pressing ctrl-a fr the help screen. Figure 7 shws the Circuit Status screen and Figure 8 shws the Circuit Status screen with the help menus:

10 Figure 8 Imprtant Things t Nte and Trubleshting Tips Remember that the ATLAS 800 PLUS /810 PLUS requires firmware revisin F.02 r higher. The ATLAS 550 requires firmware revisin B.01 r higher. If yu are using an Adtran TSU prduct with dial backup at the remte end, disable the 'Pattern Verify' ptin, as the ATLAS des nt supprt this feature. If yu are ding Bnding, remember that the ATLAS will NOT fall back t a single channel if it is nt able t bnd. Yu must manually set the MIN/MAX DS0s ptin t the number f channels yu are trying t cnnect. If the ATLAS will nt allw yu t select a prt t backup n the User Term menu, g t the Dedicated Map menus and make sure that the V.35Nx prt is listed in the FROM Slt field. Yu may highlight any field n the ATLAS cnfiguratin screen and press ctrla. If a help menu is available, a text bx will appear n yur screen explaining pssible ptins fr the highlighted screen. Sample Cnfiguratin Files The sample cnfiguratin files (see belw) are examples f the applicatin described in this nte. These files may nt cntain all the cnfiguratin ptins needed fr yur specific applicatin and are nt meant t be used as a wrking cnfiguratin fr a live netwrk. WARNING: Lading these sample cnfiguratin files will verwrite any existing cnfiguratin n yur ATLAS prduct. NOTE: Prir t lading a cnfiguratin file t the ATLAS, disengage any mdules currently installed in the ATLAS. The cnfiguratin file may cntain mdules cnfigured in certain slts which cnflicts with mdules installed in yur ATLAS. If a cnfiguratin file is laded nt an ATLAS in which the cnfigured mdules d cnflict with installed mdules, then the prtin f the cnfiguratin relating t thse mdules prts will nt be laded. Execute the file by duble clicking n it.
