1 Fermilab Time & Labr Desktp Cmputer Requirements Fermilab s new electrnic time and labr reprting (FTL) system utilizes the Wrkfrce Central prduct frm Krns. This system is accessed using a web brwser utilizing a sftware utility t run Java. Yur desktp will need t meet certain requirements t successfully use the system. Mre infrmatin abut different cnfiguratins is listed belw. Yu r yur cmputing supprt staff can use this infrmatin t ensure yur cmputer is ready t access the FTL system. upprted and Tested Cnfiguratins The cnfiguratins belw are supprted by Fermilab Cmputing Divisin and Krns and have been tested by the Krns team t verify peratin. If at all pssible, please use ne f these cnfiguratins t minimize prblems. If yu d encunter prblems using a different cnfiguratin, the Cmputing Divisin may ask yu t mve t ne f the supprted and tested cnfiguratins in rder t use the FTL system. These cmbinatins may wrk, but if yu chse t use ne f them and encunter prblems, the Cmputing Divisin will likely ask yu t use ne f the abve upprted and Tested Cnfiguratins. Windws cmputers Internet Explrer 7 r 8 with un Java 1.6 update 20 This cmbinatin may require yu t use the Java cntrl panel, Advanced tab t disable the next generatin Java Plug-in t allw access t sme FTL features Firefx 3.6 with un Java 1.6 update 7 r higher Apple Macintsh cmputers MacO , afari 5 with un Java 1.6 update 20 This cnfiguratin experiences sme csmetic prblems such as adding tw new lines t a timecard at times and sme cntrls r buttns have labels truncated me users have reprted prblems using the TimeCard save feature, but these prblems were crrected by exiting afari and using the Java Preferences utility t clear the files in the Java cache (use the Delete Files buttn n the Netwrk tab f the Java Preferences utility). As a precautinary step, ne shuld clear the Java cache after ding a MacO r afari 5 upgrade. cientific Linux Fermi (LF) cmputers The nly Linux distributin tested is LF. It is likely ther Linux distributins r variants may wrk as well, but they are nt supprted and have nt been tested. LF 4 r 5, 32-bit (i386) installatins Firefx with un Java 1.6 update 20 This cnfiguratin ften hangs Firefx when yu attempt t bring up the timecard. Users with timecard apprver rles in FTL are mre likely t find that this cnfiguratin wrks. LF 4 r 5, 64-bit (x86_64) installatins Revisin 4.00 Page 2

Find instructins fr cnfiguring 32-bit brwser and Java at LF 5 Firefx with un Java 1.6 A special fermi-timecard rpm has been created t prvide a separate Firefx brwser installatin designed t wrk with the new FTL pages. This brwser is cnfigured t wrk alngside the native Firefx brwser that is included in LF. Details n installing and using this rpm can be fund at This slutin wrks mst f the time, but freezes r crashes Firefx n ccasin. T 12 Firefx with un Java 1.6 T 12 desn t install un Java by default. The OpenJDK that is installed by default is knwn nt t wrk. ee fr instructins n installing un Java n T 12. 4 Fermi Time & Labr Desktp Cmputer Requirements MacO 10.5 Due t the fact that Firefx is a 32-bit applicatin n a 64-bit perating system (including 64-bit Java), Firefx cannt invke Java 1.6 as needed by the FTL applicatin. This versin f the perating system has afari 4 and Java 1.6 available, but due t differences in 32 and 64 bit variants f each, afari can t be made t invke the crrect Java versin when accessing FTL. MacO 10.4 and belw These envirnments d nt have the required Java 1.6 available frm Apple, s they d nt wrk with FTL. cientific Linux Fermi (LF) cmputers LF 3 LF 3 des nt wrk with FTL since Java 1.6 is nt available. LF 4 with Firefx Attempts were made t get Firefx running n LF 4, but the necessary dependencies (libraries, etc.) were nt present in LF 4 and culd nt be easily added. LF 4 r LF 5 with Firefx 3.6 Due t changes in hw Firefx invkes Java, this cnfiguratin desn t wrk with FTL. Alternative Access cnfiguratin If yu d nt have access t a wrking native cnfiguratin t use the FTL applicatin, yu can access the FTL applicatin thrugh the Windws Terminal erver. Micrsft Windws Terminal server Yu can use a remte desktp (r RDP) client frm Windws, Mac, r Linux t access a central terminal server t use the FTL system.
