2 SUCCESS WITH FAILURE: An Advanced Heart Disease Symposium PURPOSE: This symposium will enable practitioners to gain insight in to the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances for patients with advanced cardiac disease. This continuing medical education program is designed for physicians and allied health professionals, including nurse practitioners, transplant coordinators, physician assistants, RNs and case managers interested in the prevention and management of heart failure, heart transplant evaluation, posttransplant care and surgical options in heart failure. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the program, the participants will be able to: 1. Define the guidelines for the treatment of heart failure. 2. Discuss the various types of mechanical circulatory support. 3. Review mechanical circulatory support outcomes and rates of adverse events. 4. Analyze the results of recent clinical trials and their implications for patient care. 5. Differentiate treatment options for patients with advanced heart failure; transplantation vs. palliative care. 6. Identify strategies for improving patient outcomes post hospitalization. 7. Examine key clinical issues in pre and post care of the transplant patient. 8. Plan appropriate postoperative management of the transplant patient.
