2 Dear Colleague, Please join us and our distinguished faculty for the 6th Annual Illinois Chapter ACC Practice Management Symposium, taking place May 8, This year s theme is Electronic Health Records: The Winners and Losers. Any health reform proposal that includes quality reporting or outcomes data requires Electronic Medical Records (EMR). The government has mandated the acceleration of adoption of EMR. Cost, conversion of records, workflow upheaval, lack of uniformity, intraoperability and just plain fear of choosing the wrong system has prevented physicians from adopting EMR. Learners will be presented with information from experts and experiences from other cardiovascular professionals that will help ease the transition and implementation. Through evaluation of current market trends, practices will be able to identify options and methods that will work for them in the implementation of EHR. The economic stimulus package contains $20 billion to assist in the development of robust health IT infrastructure, including $17.2 billion incentives through Medicare and Medicaid, as well as new grant programs, to assist providers in adopting Health IT. The symposium faculty will provide up-to-date presentations that will improve and increase learners competence with EHR systems through expert knowledge and guidelines to evaluate, prepare, and improve EHR adoption. Through electronic records, patient safety is enhanced via erx, quality of care ensured by embedding appropriateness criteria, and patient care improved by having clinical guidelines at practitioners finger tips during every visit or phone call. Topics will include the use of EHR and quality reporting, understanding guidelines from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), workflow and staffing issues, government initiatives and funding, case studies dissecting different cardiology practice EHR adoption issues and success, a look at Cardiology in 2010, and more! 3 Symposium Objectives Review the current statistics and history of EHR adoption and understand the challenges to increasing adoption in Illinois. Distinguish between the current and proposed federal guidelines for e-prescribing. Identify the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology/ACC guidelines and process for evaluation of EHR systems and be able to evaluate systems for the participant s practice. Recognize the differences between the small, medium, larger practices and the enterprise healthcare systems and articulate EHR issues for each. Discuss ACC IC3 program, goals, and role in quality patient care and recognize the IC3 program s links to EHR.
