Fr us t achieve that high quality, Rbb Reprt requires that a cntract prf be submitted with each advertising submissin. All cntact prfs shuld be made accrding t the manufacturer s SWOP/ GRACL Applicatin Data Sheet. Fr a current list f SWOP/GRACL Applicatin Data Sheets and utput requirements, please visit Acceptable clr prfs fr new advertising materials are limited t: Kdak Veris (Frmerly Cre Veris) EFI/Best ClrPrf (Cann, Epsn, HP) GMG clrprf (Cann, Epsn, HP) Fuji FinalPrf Fuji PictrPrf Agfa Sherpa CGS ORIS (Cann, Epsn) CntractPrf (Epsn) All prfs must be made frm the riginal digital file, include trim/bleed marks, a clr cntrl bar, ID f prfing system used, calibratin date/time, and target utput prfile. Rbb Reprt will nt accept film-based halftne prfs, clr lasers, acetate clr keys, tear sheets, blue lines r any prf ther than thse mentined abve. All cntract prfs are required t be supplied with a 6 mm calibrated clr bar shwing 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 95%, and 100% tne values fr each prcess clr. Additinally, three-clr gray balance values shuld be included as described by SWOP/GRACL. Cntract Prf Targets Line Screen All cntract prfs shuld be utput at 175 line screen, with a rund halftne dt. Ttal Area Cverage Ttal area cverage (TAC) fr all supplied material shuld nt exceed 320%. Tne Value Increase and Slid Ink Density Tne Value Increase (TVI) reflects the difference between the dt in the digital file and the final printed dt. The table belw reflects target TVI (dt gain) values, as well as the assciated tlerance range fr each prcess clr. All disks shuld be labeled with advertiser name, publicatin and insertin mnth. General Guidelines Trap all artwrk when required t Ensure that all images are a minimum f 300 ppi at 100% f final placement size. Cnvert all spt/special clrs t fur-clr prcess. Please prvide CMYK files and images nly. D nt submit files in RGB, r files cntaining additinal channels. Use 12 pint ffsets fr registratin marks. All ads shuld be built with either Macintsh PstScript Type 1 fnts r OpenType fnts with PstScript utlines (.tf ). TrueType fnts will nt be accepted. What prgram files des Rbb Reprt accept? If yu are wrking n a Macintsh we can accept yur files in a variety f ways. We prefer either PDF/X-1a files r packaged layut applicatin files built in InDesign. We als accept Phtshp and Illustratr files saved in EPS r TIFF frmat. 5. Can Rbb Reprt make changes t my ad? Smetimes. If the file is supplied as a PDF/X-1a, EPS r TIFF file, we are unable t edit the advertisement. Hwever, if the file is supplied in a Macintsh-based layut prgram, we can. Please remember that any alteratins t a file will incur an additinal charge. Als, due t strict printing deadlines, smetimes we are unable t make an alteratin if it is requested t late in ur prductin cycle. 6. Why d I need t give Rbb Reprt a high quality cntract prf? In rder t ensure that what we reprduce in Rbb Reprt magazine is exactly what yu envisin, we require a cntract prf f each ad t accmpany the digital file. Nt nly des this help us eliminate errrs in the reprductin, but it gives us visual guidance while wrking n yur ad, making the entire prcess run much mre smthly. We ask that yur prf shw trim marks fr psitining and bleed. Each prf must als be supplied with a calibrated clr bar. These include images, lgs, and fnts. Either OpenType r Macintsh Pstscript Type1 screen and printer fnts are required fr us t be able t view the image n-screen and t print it crrectly. 8. What is a PstScript Type1 fnt? PstScript Type1 refers t the type f PstScript encding used t recgnize a fnt and its characteristics. Because the RIP (Raster Image Prcessing) prcess (see What is lcalized styling and why is it bad? ) renders files by their PstScript cde, a nn-pstscript fnt is nt recgnized prperly during utput. 8 faq 9. What is an OpenType fnt with PstScript utlines? OpenType is a new crss-platfrm fnt file frmat develped jintly by Adbe and Micrsft. Adbe has cnverted the entire Adbe Type Library int this new frmat. The tw main benefits f the OpenType frmat are its crss-platfrm cmpatibility (the same fnt file wrks n Macintsh and Windws cmputers) and its ability t supprt widely expanded character sets and layut features, which prvide richer linguistic supprt and advanced typgraphic cntrl. OpenType fnts use a single fnt file fr all utline, metric, and bitmap data, rather than seperate screen and utline fnt files. The OpenType frmat is a superset f the existing TrueType and PstScript Type 1 fnt frmats. OpenType can cntain either PstScript fnt utlines (.tf ) r TrueType fnt utlines (.ttf ). OpenType.tf fnts are recgnized and rendered n-screen by a PstScript rasterizer, such as Adbe Type Manager (ATM), which is either installed as an add-n system sftware cmpnent, r built int sme perating systems, such as Mac OS X. OpenType fnts peacefully cexist with current fnt frmats and can be used in the same dcument alngside PstScript Type 1 fnts. CurtC Rbb Media, LLC recmmends using either Macintsh PstScript Type 1 fnts r OpenType fnts with PstScript utlines (.tf) fr final page cmpsitin. 10. What is lcalized styling and why is it bad? Lcalized styling is altering the bld r italic appearance f a fnt (typeface) within a prgram. Fr example, if yu are using the fnt Minin in yur ad and yu wuld like certain cpy t be bld, yu might be tempted t simply make the fnt bld by using the bld buttn in the style menu. The prper way t handle this is t use the fnt that gives yu exactly the lk yu want, i.e. Minin Bld frm the glbal fnt menu. By using the layut sftware s bld functin rather than using the bld versin f the fnt, yu are als disregarding the type designers kerning and character shape adjustments. The reasn we avid lcalized styling is t avid ptential prblems during the prcess f sending the final electrnic file fr utput. This prcess is knwn as Raster Image Prcessing (RIP). RIPs used fr print prductin are generally based n PstScript technlgy. Basically, the RIP translates all elements f the file, including the fnts, accrding t its PstScript cde t enable prper press-ready utput. Smetimes, when lcalized styling is applied t a fnt, the RIP sftware des nt recgnize this encding as part f the fnt s PstScript cde and this infrmatin can be lst, resulting in incrrect reprductin. 11. Can I use an image frm a web site? Mst likely nt. Mst images that are used n the Internet are prepared at a reslutin f 72 ppi (the reslutin f mst cmmn cmputer mnitrs), t allw them t be laded and viewed quickly. Unfrtunately, this reslutin is much t lw fr quality print reprductin; we recmmend 300 ppi at 100% f final placement size. Otherwise, the image may lk jagged. 12. What shuld I d if my file is very large? All files shuld be cmpressed int ne flder befre electrnic submissin. We can accept files cmpressed using Zip (.zip), StuffIt (.sit and/r.sea), r Binhex (.hqx).
