1 Carlinas Cllege f Health Sciences Phlebtmy Prgram What is Phlebtmy? Phlebtmy is the technique f btaining bld fr a vein r skin puncture fr labratry analysis, which aids in the patient s diagnsis. A persn trained t perfrm phlebtmy prcedures is called a phlebtmist r venipuncture technician. The testing fee fr natinal certificatin is $ The salary range fr phlebtmists is apprximately $22,000 - $32,000 per year. Phlebtmy Prgram Descriptin: Weeks 1-5: Classrm and student lab instructin (80 hurs) teach skills needed fr prper cllectin f bld. Emphasis is placed n ethics, legalities, medical terminlgy, safety and infectin cntrl, quality assurance, health care delivery systems, patient relatins, anatmy and physilgy and specimen cllectin/prcessing. Classes are held at Carlinas Cllege f Health Sciences n the campus f Carlinas Medical Center in Charltte, NC. Weeks 6-10: Clinical experience (120 hurs). Students visit a variety f healthcare settings within Carlinas Healthcare System* t develp skills necessary t perfrm successful phlebtmy prcedures. Times, days, and lcatins will vary due t the availability f clinical sites. Students will g t a different site each week fr 5 weeks t btain a minimum f 150 successful venipunctures and 25 finger sticks. *Clinical rtatins will be in a variety f settings within Carlinas HealthCare System. 3 HOW TO APPLY PHASE I Attend an infrmatin sessin. Call t reserve a space. An academic assessment test * (12 minutes) will be administered during this sessin. Detailed infrmatin abut this prgram will be discussed. Yu must scre 14 r higher n the assessment test t be cnsidered fr the prgram. Cmplete and bring with yu t the sessin the CCHS applicatin frm and criminal backgrund release frm and $20 nn-refundable applicatin/testing fee. Dcumented cllege grades (unpened transcript shwing at least 12 successful semester hurs f credit) can be used in lieu f a high schl transcript. A minimum 2.0 GPA n a 4.0 scale will be evaluated.
