The DMS Prgram is designed t prvide an pprtunity fr prfessinal and persnal advancement in the medical imaging prfessin. The duratin f the prgram is frm the Spring 2017 Semester thrugh the end f the Spring 2018 Semester. The prgram will cnsist f didactic/hybrid curses with cncurrent clinical/practicum training. Students in this certificate prgram will learn the fundamentals f ultrasund physics and instrumentatin alng with crss-sectinal anatmy and pathphysilgy in the fllwing areas: abdmen, pelvis, bstetrics (OB), high risk OB, gyneclgy (GYN), superficial structures, and the use f Dppler imaging in each area. Thrughut the clinical and practicum aspect f the prgram, students will train in varius medical facilities with experienced sngraphers. Upn successful cmpletin f the prgram, students will receive an Advanced Technical Certificate in Diagnstic Medical Sngraphy and will be cmpetent t challenge the American Registry fr Diagnstic Medical Sngraphy (ARDMS) natinal examinatin. The DMS Prgram is an extensin f the STC Radilgic Technlgy Prgram. As such, applicatin requirements fr entrance int the prgram will include an Assciate in Applied Science Degree in Radilgic Technlgy acquired in an accredited prgram, current certificatin as a registered technlgist by the American Registry f Radilgic Technlgists (ARRT), and current licensure by the Texas Department f State Health Services r Texas Medical Bard. Sectin III: Applicatin Requirements Candidates must meet the fllwing criteria in rder fr the applicatin t be cmplete and cnsidered fr review: 1

2 1. Applicants must cmplete and meet the general admissins requirements t Suth Texas Cllege. Yu may apply at 2. Submit an fficial transcript frm the educatinal institutin that the Assciate f Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Radilgic Technlgy was acquired. Only fficial transcripts will be accepted and the transcript must indicate cmpletin f the AAS. In rder t meet applicatin requirements, the AAS prgram must meet the fllwing standards: The prgram must cnsist f ne f the fllwing: 24 full-time cnsecutive calendar mnths r 60 semester credits r 84 quarter credits The prgram must include a clinical internship/externship segment within the degree plan. 3. Prvide a cpy f current American Registry f Radilgic Technlgist (ARRT) certificatin as a Radilgic Technlgist. Expired r inactive certificatin will nt be accepted. 4. Prvide a cpy f current licensure by the Texas Department f State Health Services r Texas Medical Bard as a Medical Radilgic Technlgist. Expired licensure will nt be accepted. 5. Initial, sign and submit the STC Nursing & Allied Health Divisin Technical Perfrmance Standards Requirement Frm with the applicatin packet. If the Disclsure Statement is nt included, the applicatin will be cnsidered incmplete. 6. Applicants are respnsible fr reading thrugh the applicatin packet in its entirety and the submissin f accurate infrmatin. Applicants are als respnsible fr the submissin f all required dcumentatin as stipulated by the Diagnstic Sngraphy Prgram. Radilgy faculty and staff will nt resume respnsibility fr checking the applicatin packets and/r assuring applicatin cmpletin. A checklist is prvided t assist with the cmpletin f the prgram applicatin packet. 7. Applicants must sign and date the cmpleted applicatin and include all additinal required dcumentatin. The applicatin deadline is Mnday, Octber 3, 2016 at 5:00 pm. Sectin IV: Applicatin Selectin Criteria Due t the limited class number in the Diagnstic Medical Sngraphy Prgram, applicants will cmplete a selectin prcess cmprised f tw phases: Phase I and Phase II. 1. Phase I is weighted at a maximum f 75 pints and cnsists f the fllwing: a. Pints earned frm the fllwing 14 curses taken in cmpletin f an AAS Degree in Radilgic Technlgy: Human Anatmy and Physilgy I Cllege Algebra r Higher Math* Cmmunicatin Skills curse: English, Cmpsitin r Speech* General Cllege Level Physics r Radilgy Physics* The first 10 Radilgic Technlgy didactic/clinical/practicum curses listed n transcript *The highest grade earned in each indicated categry will be taken int cnsideratin. b. Overall GPA upn cmpletin f all curses taken at the educatinal institutin where the AAS in Radilgic Technlgy was btained. 2. Phase II is weighted at maximum f 15 pints and cnsists f: a. A panel interview that includes a series f 15 questins. Each interview will be apprximately thirty (30) minutes in length. Each applicant will be ntified f his/her appintment date and time immediately after the applicatin deadline. Interviews will be scheduled at the STC Nursing & Allied Health Campus; it is the applicant s respnsibility t be present at the date and time designated by the prgram faculty. Qualified applicants will be ranked frm highest t lwest ttal acceptance pints. Ttal maximum acceptance pints fr bth phases are calculated as fllws: Phase I (75) + Phase II (15) = 90 pints 2

4 Sectin V: Acceptance int the DMS Prgram Letters f acceptance/alternate/denial status int the prgram will be sent t applicants via the included n this applicatin; as such, applicants are required t submit accurate infrmatin, as this will be the nly frm f cmmunicatin. Students accepted int the prgram will be given a deadline fr submissin f dcumentatin as t their decisin t accept the ffer. Deadline fr acceptance will be strictly enfrced and late submissins will nt be accepted, n exceptins. It is the applicant s respnsibility t check his r her n a regular basis and adhere t the indicated deadlines, regardless f individual circumstances. Students accepted int the prgram will receive a letter f acceptance that cntains instructins n cmpleting the acceptance prcess and preparatin fr the Spring 2017 Semester. Students in alternate status may be eligible fr acceptance int the prgram shuld an pening arise. Students wh are denied acceptance will nt be eligible fr acceptance this fiscal year. Students accepted int the prgram will be required t cmplete a clinical cmpliance packet and btain clinical clearance in rder t cmplete the acceptance prcess. Clinical clearance will nt be issued unless all segments f the packet are submitted in a satisfactry manner. There are tw items in the packet that may take an extended amunt f time t cmplete, t include verificatin f the Hepatitis B vaccine and/r titer and a criminal backgrund check. The Hepatitis B vaccine is a clinical requirement and takes several mnths t cmplete. If yu have nt had this vaccine, yu will need t begin the series immediately. Students must submit the Technical Perfrmance Standards as part f the applicatin packet. Applicatins will be deemed as incmplete if this frm is nt signed and/r submitted. Applicants are als required t adhere t the Sciety f Diagnstic Medical Sngraphers (SDMS) requirements fr emplyment, which are as fllws: Physical Requirements The student must be physically capable f carrying ut all assigned duties, such as having: Emtinal and physical health sufficient t meet the demands f the psitin. Strength sufficient t: lift sme patients, mve heavy equipment n wheels (up t apprximately 500 lbs.), and t mve patients in wheelchairs and stretchers. The ability t maintain prlnged arm psitins necessary fr scanning. 4

5 Essential Functins The student will: Perfrm clinical assessment and diagnstic sngraphy examinatins. Use cgnitive sngraphic skills t identify, recrd, and adapt prcedures as apprpriate t anatmical, pathlgical, diagnstic infrmatin and images. Use independent judgment during the sngraphic exam t accurately differentiate between nrmal and pathlgic findings. Analyze sngrams, synthesize sngraphic infrmatin and medical histry, and cmmunicate findings t the apprpriate physician. Assume respnsibility fr the safety, mental and physical cmfrt f patients while they are in the sngrapher's care. Assist with the daily peratins f the sngraphic labratry. Maintain a daily lg f patients seen/cmplete exam billing frms. Maintain ultrasund equipment and wrk area, and maintain adequate supplies. Participate in the maintenance f labratry accreditatin. Establish and maintain ethical wrking relatinships and gd rapprt with all interrelating hspitals, referral r cmmercial agencies. Perfrm ther wrk-related duties as assigned. Examples f Duties & Respnsibilities The student will: Perfrm all requested sngraphic examinatins as rdered by the attending physician. Prepare preliminary reprts and cntact referring physician when required, accrding t established prcedures. Crdinate with ther staff t assure apprpriate patient care is prvided. Address prblems f patient care as they arise and make decisins t apprpriately reslve the prblems. Organize daily wrk schedule and perfrm related clerical duties as required. Assume respnsibility fr the safety and well-being f all patients in the sngraphic area/department. Reprt equipment failures t the apprpriate supervisr r staff member. Prvide in-service educatin team n requirements f sngraphic prcedures as requested by ther members f the health care team. Perfrm ther related duties as assigned. Demnstratin f Skills and Abilities The student will have the ability t: Effectively perate sngraphic equipment. Evaluate sngrams in rder t acquire apprpriate diagnstic infrmatin. Integrate diagnstic sngrams, labratry results, patient histry and medical recrds, and adapt sngraphic examinatin as necessary. Use independent judgment t acquire the ptimum diagnstic sngraphic infrmatin in each examinatin perfrmed. Evaluate, synthesize, and cmmunicate diagnstic infrmatin t the attending physician. Cmmunicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recgnizing the special nature f sngraphic examinatins and patient's needs.
