1 Educatinal Cmpnent fr Au Pairs Schedule f Upcming Classes The U.S. Department f State requires that all au pairs must cmplete 6 credits (r its equivalent if it is a nn-credit curse - 6 CEUs r at least 72 hurs f classes) at an accredited pst-secndary institutin ver the curse f their year in the U.S. Hst families are respnsible fr cntributing up t $500 f this cst. Hst families are als respnsible fr facilitating enrllment, prviding time ff and transprtatin s that their au pair can attend these curses. Au pairs are able t take credit curses, nn- credit curses, r credit curses nt fr credit. Only if a curse is a nn- credit curse we are able t cunt the classrm hurs. Credit Curse: Generally any curse that is ffered t a full time student which a schl has assigned a set credit value that the student will receive upn cmpletin. Cultural Care will cunt the credits that the schl assigned t the curse. Nn- Credit Curse: A nn- credit curse is a curse that a schl has nt assigned a set credit value t. These are usually ffered thrugh the cmmunity r cntinuing educatin departments f clleges and universities. Cultural Care will cunt the classrm hurs f the curse since n credits are assigned t the curse and g by the educatinal standard that 12 hurs = 1 credit. Auditing Curses: Sme schls allw students t take a credit curse, but the student can elect nt t receive a grade r be awarded transferable credits. This is usually referred t as auditing a curse and sme schls allwing auditing fr discunted rates. Nt all schls allw peple t audit curses and it is ften at the discretin f the teacher and based n space available. If an au pair chses t audit a curse, Cultural Care will cunt the credits that the schl assigns the class (even thugh the au pair is nt being graded nr actually receiving transferable credit.) Au pairs cannt cunt hurs fr an audited class that has credits assigned by the schl. IMPORTANT EXTENSION INFORMATION An au pair must cmplete his r her educatinal cmpnent requirement in their first year by the end f the 11th mnth* t be eligible t extend. Au pairs wh are extending d nt have the full 12 mnths t cmplete their curses, as Cultural Care must submit the extensin request t the Department f State 30 days befre the end f the au pairs first year. The Department f State will nt accept an extensin request that des nt include prf that the au pair cmpleted the educatinal cmpnent. Any curses they take must end prir t the last day f the 11th mnth* and cannt extend int their extensin prgram term. The educatinal cmpnent requirement fr the extensin prgram varies depending n the length f time an au pair extends fr.

2 Fr 12 and 9 mnth extensin au pairs they must cmplete 6 credits and the hst family is respnsible fr paying up t $500. Fr 6 mnth extensin au pairs the must cmplete 3 credits and the hst family is respnsible fr paying up t $250. Au pairs are required t cmplete educatinal requirement during their extensin term as well. If an au pair has cmpleted mre than the required 6 credits during her initial year, extra credits may be carried ver t the apprved prgram extensin. Hwever au pairs cannt make up fr missed credits in their first year by taking extra credits during the extensin term. *If au pair's 11th mnth date falls n Saturday r Sunday she/he must cmplete her/his educatin by the previus Thursday. If an au pair is at the end f his/her year and has cmpleted 5 credits wrth f curses can they still extend? They cannt extend unless they are able t cmplete ne mre credit, r 12 classrm hurs in the case f a nn- credit curse, befre the last day f their first year. Can an au pair take a curse that begins in their first year but ends in their secnd year? The Department f State requires that they must cmplete the 6 credits prir t the end f their 11th mnth; therefre they must find a curse that will end n later than 30 days befre the end f her/his first year. If the 30 day deadline falls n a weekend, the final deadline might be a few days earlier, s if there is an au pair wh wuld like t extend and whse class ends very clse t the 30 day mark, please cntact the Operatins department at r [email protected] m t ensure that the class ends n time and she/he is eligible t extend.
