Research Activity In the last few years the research activity f Luca Cnsle fcused n tw main tpics cncerning Artificial Intelligence and Knwledge-based intelligent agents: mdel-based diagnsis and adaptive intelligent systems. Diagnstic Systems. Research in this area fcused n bth methdlgical and applicatin issues As regards methdlgical cntributins, the wrk cncentrated n the fllwing tpics: Diagnsis f tempral and dynamic systems; definitin f strategies and algrithms fr mdeling and diagnsing devices with time-varying and dynamic behavir. Embedded diagnsis. Definitin f a new cncept f decisin tree including the ntin f time and f an algrithm fr learning these trees frm data (a tempral extensin f ID3- like algrithms). This new ntin f tree is mtivated by the need f embedding diagnstic sftware int electrnically cntrlled devised (e.g., in a car) whse behavir is time dependent and that thus cannt be diagnsed using static decisin trees. In the apprach the diagnstic trees can be learned autmatically starting frm data and using a mdel-based diagnstic engine t generate examples. Variants f the algrithm allws taking int accunt additinal aspects such as csts f sensrs, deadlines, recvery actins,.. Frmalizatin f diagnsis using prcess algebras. A new frmalizatin f the diagnstic prcess has been prpsed based n the ntin f prcess algebras. In this way all aspects cncerning diagnsis (including time varying, tempral and dynamic behavir) have been frmalized in an unifrm way. Mrever ntins such as diagnsability, detectability and discriminability have been studied and frmalized. These methdlgical studies have been carried n in strict cnnectin with the analysis f realwrld applicatins, mainly in tw areas: autmtive and aerspace. The frmer, in particular, is very interesting fr mdel-based diagnsis and indeed several applicatins have been built recently. In particular Luca Cnsle wrked n the develpment f embedded diagnstic systems, t the design f a tlkit fr develping mdel-based systems and f a tlkit fr integrating

Supprt fr FMECA generatin fr aircrafts. Wrk carried n in the AUTAS EU prject and in c-peratin with Alenia. Intelligent Interfaces and Adaptive systems. Als in this area the research activity f Luca Cnsle cncerned bth methdlgical and applicatin issues. Frm the methdlgical pint f view he cncentrated n the study and design f (i) a framewrk and architecture fr adaptive systems and (ii) a specialized framewrk fr adaptive systems t be installed n-bard vehicles. The main prblem in this case is t prvide a different range f services (e.g., infrmatin) in a way that is adapted t the lcatin, cntext f use (mainly driving situatin), the device being used and the specific user interests and preferences, in a way which is cmpatible with the task being carried n by the user n the car. Frm the sftware pint f view, mrever, the prblem is t distribute the intelligent agents and the infrmatin surces in a way the minimizes cmmunicatin, yet guaranteeing a reliable and upt-date service. A framewrk has been prpsed and experimented n a specific applicatin fr the prvisin f turist infrmatin. Frm the applicatin pint f view, the attentin fcuses n three aspects: Design f adaptive systems fr electrnic cmmerce. This has been carried n in tw prjects: SETA (funded by Telecm Italia) and the EU prject CAWICOMS. In the latter the attentin fcused als n the cnfiguratin f the services/prducts t be prvided. Adaptatin n-bard vehicles. The wrk has been carried n in a prject in c-peratin with Centr Ricerche Fiat and Magneti Marelli and led t the design, implementatin and experimentatin (evaluatin) f a prttype systems Mastrcarnte. Frm May 2003 Luca Cnsle is the Scientific directr f M3Lab (then SmartLab), a labratry fr the study f Intelligent Systems in Mbile Cmmunicatin. The labratry has been created in c-peratin with CSP (the research center f Piedmnt Lcal administratin) and is invlving several cmpanies. As a first applicatin area the lab will cncentrate n intelligent agents fr adaptive persnalized services t the citizen (with adaptatin t the lcatin, device, cntext f use, user).
