1 Junir-Level WRITING COMPETENCY PORTFOLIO Plicies and Prcedures The University f Clrad at Clrad Springs Writing Prgram Students have tw semesters t demnstrate writing cmpetency in curses beynd the six required credit hurs f writing cursewrk in ENGL 1310 and 1410 r ENGL 1310 and 2080, 2090, r INOV These six hurs vary by degree plan. Students may chse t demnstrate their writing cmpetency in ne f tw ways: 1. Submitting a prtfli t the Rhetric and Writing Prgram The prtfli assessment is an ptin chsen by mst undergraduate students at UCCS. The prtfli includes tw essays (suggested 4 pages minimum per essay) written in curses taken at UCCS after yu have cmpleted yur required six credit hurs f writing cursewrk as defined by yur majr degree plan. Yu may nt use essays frm yur cre writing requirements: ENGL 1310, 1410, 2080, 2090 r INOV 2010 curses. The papers may be analytical, argumentative r research essays written in yur majr curses. They may be essays written in a cre Humanities curse r elective. Business and engineering majrs may submit multi-authred technical r senir research seminar essays with the individual writer s prtin highlighted. Only ne multi-authred essay is permissible. In all cases, dcumented essays that integrate utside surces must cite surce material crrectly within the essay by fllwing citatin cnventins f the discipline MLA, APA, Chicag, as apprpriate fr the majr field f study. Research essays als must include a Reference r Wrks Cited page at the end. Yu shuld submit clean cpies f essays. In every case, yu need t review yur chsen essays fr sentence-level errrs, acceptable citatins, and basic cmpetency in rganizatin and paragraph structure. If yu are unsure abut the general strengths f any essay, stp int the Writing Center, 316 Clumbine Hall, and schedule a cnsultatin with ne f ur tutrs. Since papers will nt be returned, yu are advised t retain cpies f yur papers fr yur wn files. UCCS plicy states that yu must demnstrate cmpetency within 30 credit hurs f cmpletin r transfer f yur secnd required writing curse. In mst cases, cre writing curses are cmpleted by the end f ne s sphmre year, r even earlier. The prtfli assessment shuld be cmpleted at the START f yur junir year; hence, we call it a junir-level assessment. By cmpleting the prtfli in yur junir year, yu have ample time t cmplete an additinal writing curse if it is required because yu d nt pass the prtfli. Students wh d nt pass the prtfli are asked t cmplete an additinal writing curse at the 3000 level, a curse beynd thse stipulated in their degree plans. If yu d nt pass the prtfli, yu need ample time t cmplete anther writing curse. Fr this reasn, UCCS plicy requires yu t cmplete the prtfli within 30 hurs f either cmpleting r transferring yur secnd required writing curse. Sme students may nt cmplete that secnd curse befre their senir year given their degree plans r transfer situatin. In every case, yur prtfli shuld nt be delayed until yur final senir semester r after yur senir audit. Yur graduatin may be delayed if yu d nt pass this prtfli assessment. Students wh transfer ENGL1310 must pay a $5 English Prtfli Assessment fee t the Bursar s Office n the secnd flr f Main Hall. Submit yur fee receipt with yur prtfli paperwrk. If yu cmpleted ENGL 1310 at UCCS in the spring f 2005 r LATER, yu have already paid yur assessment fee fr this prcess. Students may pick up applicatin frms, cmplete paperwrk, and submit prtflis Mnday thrugh Thursday in Clumbine Yu may als cnsult the Writing Prgram web page fr ffice hurs in any given semester. 2. Cmpleting a third rhetric and writing curse with a C- r better If yu think yu might better benefit frm additinal wrk n yur writing, yu may chse t cmplete anther writing curse instead f submitting a prtfli. Students may meet the cmpetency requirement by cmpleting a 3000-level writing curse beynd thse stipulated by their degree plan. These curses include any f the fllwing ENGL curses: ENGL 3010, ENGL 3020, ENGL 3080, r ENGL 3110 r ENGL 4800 (with permissin). Yu must chse an advanced ENGL writing curse that is nt already integral t yur degree plan, and yu must earn a C- r better. Only ENGL curses at the 3000 level r beynd may cunt as prtfli curses. Students wh transfer in an advanced writing curse, which is nt required as part f their UCCS degree plan with a C- r better, may meet the 3 rd curse requirement by transfer. In this case, the 3000 level transfer writing curse is subject t review by the Directr f the UCCS Prtfli Prject, Dr. Michelle Neely.

2 Steps t cmplete Prtfli: Self-address the pstcard prvided fr yu by the Writing Prtfli Office (n stamps needed) Cmplete the Writing Cmpetency Prtfli Submissin Frm Sign the Hnr Cde Agreement n the Scre Sheet. Sign the senir submissin release frm as applicable Pay the $5 fee t the Bursar s Office and save the receipt Submit the pstcard, the frm, the receipt, and at least tw essays t Clumbine Hall 1046 Fr infrmatin, plicy clarificatin and prtfli advising, students shuld walk in and visit with ur Writing Prgram Assistants in Clumbine Yu may walk in during ffice hurs M-R. Packets are available arund the clck utside COB 1046 in the grey hanging file. Yu will receive clear, timely and helpful infrmatin if yu walk in during ur ffice hurs. Phne messages are much less effective, s they shuld be reserved fr students wh are ut f state r therwise remved frm the university. 3 Junir-level Writing Prtfli Criteria The University f Clrad at Clrad Springs Writing Prgram Belw yu will find a list f general writing cmpetencies expected f yu as a writer. Purpse Writer uses a clear thesis statement, makes a primary claim r clearly states the essay s purpse Develpment f Ideas Writer fully respnds t stated purpse r supprts the stated thesis Writer demnstrates a cmpetent understanding f the subject matter Writer develps ideas thrugh the use f specific detail, evidence, analysis, and effective reasning in the essay s bdy Organizatin Writer builds a structure that fully respnds t stated purpse r thesis Writer effectively structures paragraphs Writer uses paragraph structure t clearly mark the beginning, middle, and end f the essay Language (Sentence-level issues, including punctuatin, grammar and prfreading expectatins) Writer demnstrates cntrl f language at the sentence level thrugh effective sentence cnstructin and jining. Writer s sentences effectively deliver ideas Writer avids grss grammatical errrs that impede the readers understanding. Dcumentatin Writer cites surces used in the essay accrding t disciplinary cnventins (MLA, APA, Chicag, etc). Writer includes a Reference, Bibligraphy r Wrks Cited Page fr all dcumented essays In-text citatins demnstrate cnsistent ability t intrduce surces and use them t effectively supprt the essay s thesis r purpse NOTE: In all cases, a submitted essay that includes plagiarized surce materials will autmatically fail the prtfli assessment. Yur Hnr Cde signature guarantees that yu have nt plagiarized within any f yur submitted essays.
