1 MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION About Barbican Theatre The Barbican Theatre is a regional centre of excellence for young, new and emerging theatre and dance artists, a community catalyst and creative hub at the heart of the historic Barbican. It occupies a key place in the cultural life of the city offering its audiences a theatre, dance, comedy and music programme at small-scale with a popular, alternative cafe/bar. The Barbican Theatre performs a key development role in the city and region enabling young people and emerging artists to make work through access to spaces, networks and support to capitalise on talent. It operates predominantly across three strands; a skills development programme, a coproduction and own production programme and toured-in theatre and dance shows in two performance spaces (140-seat auditorium and studio). The company places education and the development of creative skills at the heart of its mission, which is: To offer as many people as possible, but especially the young, access to, participation in, and enjoyment of, high-quality artistic activity without prejudice. This is practised in the belief that such involvement cultivates, inspires and enthuses individuals and communities to explore and express ideas and needs, voice opinions, celebrate together and agitate for social and cultural change. Barbican Theatre is 35 years old and has an annual turnover of c. 500,000 per year. It is one of 633 National Portfolio Organisations funded by Arts Council England with secure funding to The theatre is also funded by Plymouth City Council. The current ratio of grant to income generation is 48% to 52%. The Basement Project Barbican Theatre is at an exciting second stage of development. Senior staff are currently negotiating a 10-year lease on a property 6 minutes walk away from the theatre. The Basement project will transform 2 unused first fix restaurant units at 12 & 16 Bilbury St, Bretonside, into 3 rehearsal studios, stage set, prop, costume construction workshop (messy space) and start up offices. This will double the space capacity of the theatre and double the number of people who can engagement with it.
2 The Basement will be developed as an incubation hub for young and emerging performance artists and support 8.5new jobs in the cultural industries. It will be a permanent base for the Theatre s highly regarded training programmes enabling the auditorium to be utilised fully as a publicly facing theatre with a greatly increased programme of theatre, dance, music and comedy. The Basement project will increase long-term sustainability with a target of changing the level of income generation in our turnover from 52% to 75%. The Marketing & Communications Manager is expected to respond to this challenge and bring new skills and expertise in to the team. Key to this will be a clear long-term marketing and communications strategy running alongside day-to-day marketing processes. Job Purpose To be responsible for the strategic development and delivery of the Barbican Theatre s marketing and communications activities. To effectively manage and develop all areas of marketing and communications activity to drive the next phase of growth. To develop marketing and communications activity to support the increase in hire and programming activity in the Theatre and Basement. Responsible to: Responsible for: Company Director Marketing Apprentice/Freelance Staff/Casual Staff/Marketing Volunteers Principle Responsibilities To plan, manage and monitor and develop all aspects of the Barbican Theatre s marketing and communications To develop the advertising, sponsorship and sales potential of the Barbican Theatre building and its cultural assets Principle Tasks Create, deliver and monitor the marketing and communications strategy and the annual marketing plan Contribute to the excellent reputation and high regard of Barbican Theatre by gaining coverage in local and national press and media Be the point of contact for any marketing, advertising and sponsorship enquiries Determine, manage and maximise the marketing budget, assessing the ROI from the various marketing channels Identify new marketing channels to raise Barbican Theatre s profile locally, regionally and nationally Work closely with the Artistic Directors to produce exciting and engaging marketing materials for theatre s own produced work Prepare and manage the distribution of all marketing materials, both print and online Manage the theatre s digital marketing, including social media and , using tools like Google Analytics and Dotmailer to monitor results
3 Manage the website and generate fresh, engaging content Schedule print and online advertising to get the best ROI Develop and maintain corporate partnerships and organise VIP and fundraising events Develop and maintain strong relationships with funders, potential funders, customers and other stakeholders Monitor and evaluate marketing activities, produce marketing reports and contribute to Senior Management meetings as required Be available to support the Box Office and Front of House with bookings and enquiries Support senior staff with fundraising bids appropriate to Barbican Theatre s mission Report to staff and funders on specific projects as required Stay up-to-date with the latest legislation, consumer behaviour and marketing tools Act as an effective advocate for Barbican Theatre and represent the theatre at key meetings, groups and networks Title: Hours: Salary: Annual Leave: Probationary Period: Notice Period: Other Benefits: Marketing & Communications Manager 40 hours per week flexible hours. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Education and Qualifications Experience Skills Essential Experience of marketing, sales, PR and communications A successful track-record of delivering measurable results in marketing Experienced in using Microsoft Office, Photoshop and other IT software An understanding of confidentiality and Data Protection requirements Experience of managing a team A self-starter with excellent organisational, planning and administrative ability Desirable Marketing qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) or other marketing body Experience of working in the performing arts Experience of using Adobe InDesign, imovie and other editing software Experience of using software Experience managing freelance staff Experience of working with website designers and graphic designers Good customer service skills Able to write design briefs A creative thinker with high level written and verbal communication skills Analytical and commercial with proven ability to manage a budget effectively Proficiency in box-office/crm systems Able to manage both permanent and temporary staff Able to write for various channels (e.g. press, , social media) Proven ability to manage time, plan proactively and prioritise
