1 JOB Senior TITLE Fire Engineer New Zealand Fire Service Position Description Job #: 112/2016 Business Area: NHQ : National Risk Reduction Group Location: Auckland Reports to: Fire Engineering Team Leader Date: December 2014 Position context The New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) is comprised of five regions with around 400 stations, and 9,000 volunteer and paid firefighters spread throughout the country. As well as responding to a wide range of emergency situations, the NZFS is focussed on fire safety and prevention in NZ communities. Fire Engineers within the New Zealand Fire Service work within a national engineering team, which forms part of the National Risk Reduction Group (NRR). The three main roles within the engineering unit are Regional technical support Design review Projects Vision, mission and values Our Vision: Our Mission: Our Values: Leading integrated fire and emergency services for a safer New Zealand Te Manatū o ngā ratonga ohotata kia haumaru ake ai a Aotearoa To reduce the incidence and consequences of fire and to provide a professional response to other emergencies Serving our Communities Integrity Adaptability Skill Comradeship Position purpose The primary purpose of the role of a Fire Engineer is to provide superior technical support services, which result in the reduction of fire risk to the New Zealand public.
2 Key accountabilities The job holder is responsible for: Technical advice: Undertake site/building inspections Provide written advice to internal clients as a result of site/building inspections Attend meetings (fire engineering brief, fire-fighting facilities etc) and provide written technical advice Provide written technical advice to external clients such as consulting engineers and territorial authorities Design Review: Review Fire Engineering designs to evaluate the provisions for means of escape and facilities for fire fighting operations Provide advice to Building Control Authorities (BCA) in New Zealand on fire engineering designs lodged for building consent Meet the BCA advice deadline of 10 working days Training: Deliver and assist in the development of training to fire service personnel on technical and fire related matters including but not limited to; Fire dynamics, Fire engineering (fire safety systems), building construction and failure, live fire behaviour (fire investigation), fire extinguishment methods, physics, chemistry and mathematics Mentor junior members of the engineering team Projects: Be a project team leader to provide technical input on a variety of operational and risk mitigation matters Develop operational procedures and codes of practice for use within NZFS Represent the NZFS on internal and external national committees where required Research: Participate in research and development initiatives that increase operational efficiency and encourage the use of best practice Post Fire Audit: Undertake post fire audits and produce recommendation reports on outcomes and identified deficiencies and inadequacies with building design and construction Analyse the effectiveness of fire engineering designs and fire safety systems Provide computer modeling expertise during audit and investigations when required Author post incident audit reports and post on the NZFS website to provide information to interested parties such as designers etc Miscellaneous duties: Any other duties consistent with the position as may be required from time to time by the Page 2

4 Preferred/Advantage/Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in Fire Engineering Experience: Minimum of 7 years experience in a Fire Engineering role Understanding of core Fire Service business and processes Demonstrate an ability in managing projects Knowledge and understanding of Fire Service Act, Building Act Develop and deliver training to fire service personnel on technical and fire related matters Previous experience in mentoring staff for professional development purposes Page 4
