5 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack Overview Slutin Fcus This reference architecture aims t help rganizatins create and deply a private clud instance within their wn netwrk space and with cmputing resurces under their wn cntrl. It cvers netwrking, cmputing hardware, sftware, and key areas f integratin, fcusing n hw t leverage the highly autmated nature f such a private clud instance t deply any phase r type f wrklad frm testing t prductin services. The target audience is IT prfessinals respnsible fr setting up, cnfiguring, administering, and perating a private clud infrastructure cmpnents. Backgrund Clud cmputing delivers access t resurces like hardware and sftware ver a netwrk, abstracting the cmplex, internal infrastructures frm end users and, t an extent, frm sme develpment and infrmatin technlgy prfessinals (DevOps). It allws virtual instances, r wrklads, t be prvisined n demand frm predefined templates with little cncern abut the underlying infrastructure r resurces. Services, cnsisting f many wrklads can be prvisined fr use in minutes and then scaled apprpriately t meet service demands. Fr further reference, the Natinal Institute f Standards and Technlgy's (NIST) Definitin f Clud Cmputing describes the imprtant characteristics f clud cmputing. While public clud services have existed fr sme time, a private clud enables cmpanies t take advantage f the clud cmputing benefits with less risk f data expsure and mre cntrl f resurces because they dn t need t share them with thers. Hwever, cmpared t public cluds, private cluds impact return n investment because they require lcally maintained infrastructure. Yet, because private clud resurces can be shared, they ffer ptentially higher verall utilizatin with the ttal cst f wnership likely lwer than traditinal IT infrastructure deplyments. Apprach This reference architecture prvides a cmplete private clud slutin, including the cre physical infrastructure and enterprise-ready versins f many pen surce fferings. It als extends the framewrk t include creating virtualized wrklads and managing resurces and wrklads thrugh their cmplete life cycle. With this framewrk, custmers can gain agility, scale, and imprve utilizatin f resurces and still be cnfident f a supprted and secure apprach. Cnceptually, the basic building blcks fr a private clud instance are much like any IT infrastructure: netwrking, cmputing hardware, and sftware. With private cluds, delivering rbust netwrk resurces fr the cre infrastructure and the needs f the wrklads requires significant attentin. High-speed, scalable devices like the Dell PwerCnnect series f netwrk switches and mdern industry-standard x86-based servers like the Dell PwerEdge C Servers prvide an ideal platfrm fr private cluds because they balance perfrmance and efficiency. The emerging sftware standard fr private clud implementatin is the pen surce Linux perating system. The current reference framewrk fr the clud itself, OpenStack, is als pen surce, as are many clud sub-cmpnents. Examples include Xen r KVM virtualizatin technlgies and Crwbar, an v

By relying n cntributins frm many cncerned parties, the verall private clud ecsystem yields a cmpletely functinal, usable, and stable instance tday and cntinues t rapidly imprve and evlve. 7 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack The typical use cases fr a private clud instance such as the ne dcumented here illustrates the pwer f this slutin: In SUSE Studi, a develper can create a cmplete sftware appliance, iterating as needed t prvide a prven wrking slutin. Each build seamlessly appears in the clud dashbard interface as a wrklad guest image fr deplyment nt varius clud infrastructure resurces fr testing r prductin qualificatin. As directed, an peratr r administratr can prmte these wrklad guest images t be deplyed when needed by the varius user cmmunities within the scpe f their resurce qutas. These wrklad guest images can then be deplyed frm the clud dashbard r via the cmmand-line interfaces with cnfidence as business cnditins dictate. As either new resurces r wrklads are deplyed, SUSE Manager autmatically incrprates them t ensure mnitring, cmpliance and ther service management practices are maintained ver their peratinal life cycle. Fr the remainder f this dcument, the user shuld refer t the dcumentatin fr the specific netwrk, cmputing hardware, and sftware prduct under discussin, using this reference architecture as supplemental infrmatin t augment, clarify, and further refine the use f the ther dcumentatin fr a successful deplyment. Site Preparatin Needed Fr the Deplyment Facility Cnsideratins The heating, ventilatin, air cnditining (HVAC) and pwer requirements fr deplyment can be estimated using the Dell Energy Smart Slutin Advisr. Using this tl, yu can plan the needs fr yur slutin, rder the crrect Pwer Distributin Unit (PDU), and have the prper HVAC ready fr the installatin. This reference architecture des nt specify any PDU since pwer requirements vary depending n the exact cnfiguratin, and the pwer cnfiguratin in the final installatin lcatin. Netwrking and Netwrk Services We recmmend using Dell Frce10 S60 tp-f-rack (TR) switches in the rack. Each rack hlds a maximum f 20 servers in sme cnfiguratins while a dense packing f sleds in the C-series server chassis can accmmdate even mre. Each rack has tw TR Frce10 S60 switches that are stacked, and this stack cnnects t the tw aggregatin layers. The Frce10 S60 stack ffers a single switch view t the servers. Each C-series nde can have up t fur 1G NIC prts, frming a link aggregatin grup (LAG) f 2(4) GbE acrss the prts with at least ne prt n each switch in the stack. The LAG f 2(4) GbE ffers switch redundancy within the rack and enables high availability. When deplyed, the TR switches are physically stacked tgether. Stacking the switches ffers sme significant benefits. vii

Stacked Tp-f-Rack Switch Benefits All switches in the stack are managed as a single switch. The stack is viewed as a single switch by the Spanning Tree Prtcl. Stacking multiple switches in a chassis allws a link aggregatin grup acrss prts n different switches in the stack. Traffic between the individual switches in a stack is passed acrss the stacking cable, reducing the amunt f traffic passed upstream t netwrk distributin switches. The stacking mdule supprts a higher data rate than the 10GbE uplink mdule (supprts 12Gb per stack prt ffering 24Gb between switches). Uplink prts are shared by all switches in the stack, reducing the number f distributin switch prts necessary t cnnect mdular servers t the netwrk. The basic firmware management cmmands prpagate new firmware versins and bt image settings t all switch stack members. Hwever, the stacked TR setup des present sme cnsideratins and cnsequences t be aware f: Stacking cables are prprietary and cme in nly 1m and 3m lengths. This requires the switches t be in clse prximity t each ther. Stacking requires a ring tplgy fr redundancy. This makes the distance limitatin n the length f the stacking cables a bigger issue. Errrs in cnfiguratin prpagate thrughut the stack immediately. Lgical Netwrk Cnfiguratin While this slutin has been architected t minimize cnfiguratin tasks, it still lgically segregates traffic. There are many netwrks (admin, strage, nva-fixed, public, nva-private), each segmented int a separate vlan: viii

Descriptin Clud Netwrk Segment Descriptins Used fr administrative functins such as Crwbar nde installatin, TFTP bting, DHCP assignments, KVM, system lgs, backups, and ther mnitring. There is nly ne vlan set up fr this functin and it spans the entire netwrk. The BMC vlan is a subset f the Admin vlan used fr cnnecting t the BMC f each nde. These netwrks can have an external ruter, but using the external/public vlan is preferred. Used by the Swift strage system fr replicating data between machines, mnitring data integrity, and perfrming ther strage-specific functins. (802.1q tagged). Nva internde cmmunicatins, including guests talking t their hst systems. This is used within the clud infrastructure nly. Used fr cnnectins t devices that are external t the OpenStack clud infrastructure. These include externally visible services, such as lad balancers and web servers. Use ne r many f these netwrks depending n the need t segregate traffic amng grups f servers. (802.1q tagged). Nva Flating vlan is a subset f the public netwrk and is used t give Nva guests publically accessible IP addresses. NOTES: Unlike the external and internal vlan segments, the administrative vlan des nt use 802.1q vlan tagging. Using flat r LAG-bnded interfaces and sftware cntrlled netwrk cnfiguratins fr the varius vlan segments is recmmended. Using this default netwrk cnfiguratin, up t 49 cmpute ndes may be accmmdated and up t 80, inclusive f cntrl + cmpute/strage, ndes, with abut 200 wrklad instances. There is n IPv6 supprt fr SUSE Clud implementatins at this time. Mre details regarding the varius netwrks and designated ranges within each subnet are available in the SUSE Clud Deplyment Guide. Cmputing Hardware T reduce the time spent n hardware specificatin fr an initial private clud implementatin, the hardware shuld be general purpse and allw fr a wide range f cnfiguratin ptins. Fr pilts, the recmmended hardware has been ptimized fr infrastructure, cmpute, and strage rles. As nted thrughut this reference architecture, we are cnstantly adding capabilities t expand this ffering. We encurage yu t discuss yur plans with us t help us understand market drivers and expand the ffering. x

11 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack The Dell PwerEdge C6220 server is designed t deliver the highest pssible perfrmance in a dense, scale-ut package. This shared-infrastructure server ffers a mix f perfrmance, flexibility, and efficiency that makes it an exceptinal building blck fr render farms as well as fr high-perfrmance cmputing, data analytics, clud cmputing, and Web 2.0 envirnments. The PwerEdge C6220 chassis supprts up t fur independent server ndes in a 2U frm factr, using the latest Intel Xen prcessr E prduct family. This helps t bst perfrmance cmpared t the Intel Xen prcessr 5600 series used in previus generatins f the PwerEdge C6100 server. The PwerEdge C6220 server cnfiguratin in this reference architecture is designed as a gettingstarted setup fr administratin, cntrl, cmpute and, strage ndes since it prvides a flexible fundatin fr expansin. By design, yu can re-purpse the reference architecture cnfiguratin as yur clud deplyment grws t prtect yur investment. Please cnsider the fllwing infrmatin when using this hardware selectin: The minimum number f individual machines required t implement this reference architecture with a SUSE Clud setup featuring all services is seven: ne SUSE Manager server, ne SUSE Studi server, ne Administratin Server, ne Cntrller Nde, ne (r mre) Cmpute Nde(s), and ne (r mre) pairs f ptinal Strage Ndes. We recmmend at least tw full Dell PwerEdge C6220 chassis, each ppulated with fur ndes. In additin t that, a netwrk gateway prviding access t the public netwrk is required. Ntes: Ensure that each nde meets the hardware requirements fr its target service rle. Apply all firmware updates, especially fr IPMI and BIOS, t all ndes befre prceeding t ensure the latest released versins are in place. Cnfigure the available disks as a single LUN fr each nde, using RAID6 t prvide maximum file space and redundancy. If strage ndes are deplyed, tw LUNs shuld be setup, ne fr the perating system and the secnd fr the strage capacity. Ensure that the bt methd is set t BIOS, nt UEFI, and that NIC enumeratin fr bting is managed via the BIOS. The BIOS devname bt parameter must als be used t enfrce the legacy eth* naming cnventins. In rder t facilitate setting up and administering the varius servers, the embedded BMC netwrk interface fr systems hsting the SUSE Clud Administratin Server, SUSE Manager, and SUSE Studi shuld be cnnected t a subnet (typically utside the private clud netwrk infrastructure) that allws easy administratin access, while all ther ndes shuld have their BMC netwrk interfaces cnnected t the internal private clud admin netwrk. NOTE: The Administratin Server will cnfigure the BMC during nde setup, and the perating system install will use the netwrk interfaces presented t it. A cmplete system and netwrk deplyment diagram is illustrated in the fllwing figure: xi

Clud Deplyment Schematic Sftware Cmpnents As nted in the verview, three SUSE prducts are included in the reference architecture: SUSE Clud prvides the enterprise-grade implementatin f OpenStack cmpnents plus Crwbar and ther tls. SUSE Clud frms the basis f the private clud perating system and verall framewrk t abstract the netwrk, cmputing, and strage resurces. SUSE Studi Onsite allws yu t build virtual applicatin wrklads within a cnvenient web user interface. These images then can be seamlessly integrated int SUSE Clud fr deplyment as wrklads and can be autmatically integrated with SUSE Manager. SUSE Manager allws yu t reprt n the status f the physical resurces in yur private clud instance and t manage the peratinal life cycle f the deplyed wrklads including cnfiguratin management, patch and update management, and mnitring f key resurces and services As preparatin, dwnlad each f these prducts frm SUSE Free Dwnlads site. In additin, all f these sftware prducts can be directly rdered frm Dell; refer t the part numbers cited in the apprpriate appendix at the end f this paper. If yu just want t evaluate these prducts, bth SUSE Clud and SUSE Manager are available with a free 60-day evaluatin subscriptin. Fr free access t xii

Once yu have all the required sftware prduct images and activatin cdes at hand, prceed t the next sectin t implement yur private clud instance. Slutin The sftware prducts are listed here in a suggested deplyment rder. There are interdependencies s it may be necessary t implement part f a given prduct, then mve t anther befre cmpleting the first. In general, each f the three SUSE prducts is mstly standalne in its initial setup and cnfiguratin. As a result, yu can set up and cnfigure them in parallel until the required integratin steps. Fr future use, this reference architecture relies n the cre design decisins and settings, summarized in the fllwing table. Table 3. 14 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack SUSE Clud SUSE Clud is based n SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, plus pen surce cmpnents like OpenStack, Crwbar, and many thers. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is used as the underlying perating system fr all clud infrastructure machines (als called ndes ), whereas OpenStack, the clud management framewrk, wrks as the clud perating system. Crwbar and ther cmpnents are used by SUSE Clud t autmatically deply and manage the OpenStack ndes frm a central Administratin Server. This nde prvides an abstractin ver all f the cmplexity and interactins f the varius sftware cmpnents, yielding an easy way t set up a private clud implementatin. The varius ndes that cmprise a private clud instance are shwn in the figure belw: Figure 5. SUSE Clud Internal Cmpnents Administratin Server The first system t set up is the Administratin Server. It prvides all services needed t set up and deply all ther ndes in the clud. Mst f these services are prvided by the clud deplyment engine, including Crwbar and ther tls that autmate all the required installatin and cnfiguratin tasks. Amng the services prvided by the server are DHCP, DNS, NTP, PXE, and TFTP. NOTE: The Administratin Server must prvide the nly DHCP service that is visible n that admin vlan t prperly setup and install the ther ndes. xiv

15 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack The Administratin Server als cmmnly hsts the necessary sftware repsitries fr SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Clud since they are needed fr nde deplyment. Optinally (if n ther surces fr the sftware repsitries are available), it hsts the Subscriptin Management Tl (SMT), prviding up-t-date repsitries with updates and patches fr all ndes. Setup and integratin steps: 1. Select ne nde (sled) frm the desired Dell PwerEdge C6220 chassis t act as the Administratin Server, ensuring that it meets the necessary hardware requirements fr this rle. Use direct cnsle access r virtual cnsle access via the BMC t cnfigure the attached strage, prbably as a RAID 6 LUN acrss all available disk drives. Frm either direct cnsle access with an external media drive r via virtual media ptin f the BMC and the ISO image file, perfrm an x86_64 architecture installatin f: NOTES: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server plus the necessary add-ns: SUSE Clud SUSE Subscriptin Management Tl (needed nly if yu dn't already have access t such repsitries) Either a default install r, minimally, the patterns cited in the SUSE Clud deplyment guide are required. If the attached LUN exceeds 4TB in size, remember t first create a smaller partitin fr /bt t prevent issues with the grub btlader and vlumes greater than 2TB. Cmplete the next set f steps as described in the SUSE Clud Deplyment Guide, including: Prduct Registratin Online Update CA Setup Basic Netwrk Cnfiguratin SMT Cnfiguratin (ptinal) 2. Carefully review the Crwbar Setup sectin, selecting the apprpriate netwrk mde as nted in the dcumented design decisins table. NOTE: Als ensure that all the remaining clud ndes have the BMC cnfigured and available n the admin vlan subnet. 3. Perfrm the setup step fr all the necessary sftware repsitries, as nted in the SUSE Clud Deplyment Guide. NOTE: Sme time is required t set up all f this prperly and t mirrr all cntent. xv

16 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack 4. At this pint, carefully review the netwrk cnfiguratin t ensure yur setup cmplies with the check pints nted in the SUSE Clud Deplyment Guide. Then, using a terminal multiplexer, like the screen utility, cmplete the fllwing prcess: Execute the /pt/dell/bin/install-chef-suse.sh setup script. When it cmpletes, review the nted lg file fr any issues. NOTE: The netwrk setup is fixed at this pint and cannt be mdified. T make changes, yu must restart the setup prcess. 5. Sme additinal integratin may be undertaken at this pint t ease later setups and prvide a mre cnvenient wrking envirnment fr the administratr and users: Yu shuld add lcal hst reslutin entries fr sme f the ther cre servers (assuming the default netwrk setup, adjust as necessary), by executing the fllwing cmmands: ech " susestudi.dellsuse.cm susestudi" >> /etc/hsts ech " susemanager.dellsuse.cm susemanager" >> /etc/hsts Remember that the Administratin Server is yur default DNS server fr the private clud instance, s yu shuld use it as the default DNS server fr SUSE Manager and SUSE Studi s that yu can reslve hstnames fr the clud wrklad guests. If yu need t make changes t the AutYast file used t install the clud infrastructure resurces after yu run the install-suse-chef.sh script, yu will need t execute the fllwing cmmands n the Administratin Server: knife ckbk uplad - /pt/dell/chef/ckbks/ prvisiner chef-client The remaining required ndes f the SUSE Clud infrastructure can be set up, cnfigured, and managed frm the administratin nde web interface. The nly prerequisite is t be able t PXE bt each f the systems against the Administratin Server via the admin vlan subnet. This includes the Cntrller, Cmpute, and Strage Ndes. Each resurce nde will becme visible t the Administratin Server after PXE bting, at which pint basic system infrmatin is returned t the administratin web interface in a "Discvered" mde, and then the new nde can be Allcated fr use in the varius type f ndes. Fllw the SUSE Clud Deplyment Guide, paying careful attentin t the rder listed. NOTES: As each nde is "Discvered," it is advisable t grup the ndes by functinal type, prviding a handle t arrange and manage all yur ndes. Alias names can als be used t make identifying the nde easier. Befre prceeding, it is imperative that all the sftware repsitries are mirrred and available n the Administratin Nde and, if yu wuld like t have the physical resurces f each nde being managed, that the SUSE Manager hst is set up and running, ready fr integratin. xvi

17 SUSE Clud Slutin Pwered by OpenStack Cntrller Nde The Cntrller Nde hsts all OpenStack services needed t rchestrate virtual machines deplyed n the Cmpute Ndes in the SUSE Clud. It is managed and deplyed thrugh the Administratin Server web interface. PXE bt the desired nde (sled) frm the Dell PwerEdge C6220 chassis t act as the Cntrller Nde, ensuring that it meets the necessary hardware requirements Cmpute Nde(s) NOTE: Ensure that each f the supprted services are successfully set up befre mving n t the next service. The Cmpute Nde is a physical server running a hypervisr, serving as a hst fr wrklad guest virtual machines. At this time, either Xen r KVM is a viable hypervisr, but this reference architectures assumes KVM is in use. Cmpute ndes als huse the rt and ephemeral disk images f the running wrklad guests, but this space is reclaimed when a guest is terminated. PXE bt the desired ndes (sleds) frm the Dell PwerEdge C6220 chassis t act as the Cmpute Ndes, ensuring that it meets the necessary hardware requirements, Strage Nde(s) (ptinal) The Strage Nde acts as a cntrller fr persistent clud-based strage elements. A SUSE Clud infrastructure can cntain multiple Strage Ndes and prvides bject (via Swift) strage elements. SUSE Clud is cnfigured t always use all unused disks n a nde fr strage. As nted in the site preparatin sectin, these ndes shuld have tw LUNs cnfigured. PXE bt the desired ndes (sleds) frm the Dell PwerEdge C6220 chassis t act as the Strage Ndes, ensuring that it meets the necessary hardware requirements NOTE: Strage Ndes shuld be deplyed in pairs t prvide data redundancy. SUSE Manager SUSE Manager is based n SUSE Linux Enterprise Server plus ther pen surce cmpnents like Spacewalk. SUSE Manager prvides patch and update management, cmpliance tls and reprting, and ther deplyment and mnitring ptins. In this reference architecture, SUSE Manager will be used by administratrs t reprt n the underlying cmpute and strage resurces status and t help manage the life cycle f the deplyed wrklads. As with the ther SUSE sftware prducts used in this reference architecture, nly differences r additins frm the prduct dcumentatin will be presented. Fr this reference architecture, a single SUSE Manager tplgy is sufficient and can be set up accrding t the prduct dcumentatin. Unless ther cnditins exist, using the included PstgreSQL database is recmmended. As the dwnlad image cmes in a pre-cnfigured appliance mdel using the abve recmmendatins, the setup is straightfrward and can leverage the SMT system already resident n the SUSE Clud Administratin Server fr update repsitries. xvii

After the initial setup and cnfiguratin steps, it is useful t set up additinal grups, ne fr the infrastructure resurces and ne fr the wrklads. Fr example, frm the SUSE Manager web interface, add the fllwing grups: Clud Infrastructure Clud Guests In this fashin, the infrastructure resurces, like Cmpute r Strage Ndes, can be managed with ne set f plicies by an admin grup, and the wrklads can be managed anther way by the same r a distinct grup. Frm the SUSE Manager web interface, create tw distinct activatin keys, which will be used in the next step by the each f the new grups in their respective btstrap scripts. Obtain a cpy f the default btstrap.sh script (r create the initial ne frm the web interface). Make tw cpies; then: Set the parameter "FULLY_UPDATE_THIS_BOX" t 0 t ensure the Administratin Server des nt autmatically distribute any available updates. Save ne cpy as "btstrap_clud_guests.sh with the respective activatin key. Fr the ther cpy, name as "btstrap_clud.sh" and als make the fllwing change: Set the parameter "DISABLE_LOCAL_REPOS" t 0 t allw SUSE Manager see what updates are available. The final step fr integratin requires that an AutYast file r ther pst-install scripting mechanism is used t deply the infrastructure resurces and cntains the apprpriate invcatin f the desired btstrap script. Fr example the fllwing invcatin wuld crrectly assciate this system with the infrastructure grup (assuming the default netwrking setup, adjust as necessary): wget -qo - /bin/bash NOTE: Fr wrklad guests a similar situatin exists (fr btstrap_clud_guests.sh), but if these are created in SUSE Studi, the pst-install script wuld be managed there. SUSE Studi Onsite SUSE Studi Onsite is based n SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and prvides a web-based interface t build and test clud-ready system applicatin images r appliances. These images can be easily integrated with the private clud instance cvered in this reference architecture and even deplyed t public cluds. NOTE: If yu are using the public instance f SUSE Studi, instead f deplying an nsite instance, the resulting images will need t be manually integrated with yur SUSE Clud instance. This can be accmplished with shell access t the nde hsting Glance and utilizing the glance-image-create cmmand line utility. xviii
