Disaster Recvery Rights Fr each instance f eligible server sftware yu run in a physical r virtual OSE n a licensed server, yu may temprarily run a backup instance in a physical r virtual OSE n either, (a) servers dedicated t disaster recvery and t yur use, r, (b) fr instances f eligible sftware ther than Windws Server, n Micrsft Azure Services, prvided the backup instance is managed by Azure Site Recvery t Azure. The license terms fr the sftware and the fllwing limitatins apply t yur use f the backup instance. The backup instance can run nly during the fllwing exceptin perids: Fr brief perids f disaster recvery testing within ne week every 90 days. During a disaster, while the prductin server being recvered is dwn. Arund the time f a disaster, fr a brief perid, t assist in the transfer between the primary prductin server and the disaster recvery server. In rder t use the sftware under disaster recvery rights, yu must cmply with the fllwing terms: The OSE n the disaster recvery server must nt be running at any ther times except as abve. The OSE n the disaster recvery server may nt be in the same cluster as the prductin server. Other than backup instances running n Micrsft Azure Services, a Windws Server license is nt required fr the disaster recvery server if the Hyper-V rle within Windws Server is used t replicate virtual OSEs frm the prductin server at a primary site t a disaster recvery server. The disaster recvery server may be used nly t run hardware virtualizatin sftware (such as Hyper-V), prvide hardware virtualizatin services, run sftware agents t manage the hardware virtualizatin sftware, serve as a destinatin fr replicatin, receive replicated virtual OSEs, test failver, and/r await failver f the virtual OSEs. Use f the sftware backup instance shuld cmply with the license terms fr the sftware. Once the disaster recvery prcess is cmplete and the prductin server is recvered, the backup instance must nt be running at any ther times except thse times allwed here. Maintain Sftware Assurance cverage fr all CALs, External Cnnectr licenses and Server Management Licenses under which yu access the backup instance and manage the OSEs in which that sftware runs. Yur right t run the backup instances ends when yur Sftware Assurance cverage ends. Yur specific Sftware Assurance benefit eligibility can vary by Vlume Licensing prgram (such as an Enterprise Agreement r Open Value Agreement) and prduct, as well as the number f qualifying licenses yu have enrlled in Sftware Assurance. These technlgies include: The Vlume Activatin Services server rle Vlume Activatin Services is a server rle in Windws Server 2012 (r later editins) that enables yu t autmate and simplify the issuance and management f Micrsft sftware vlume licenses fr a variety f scenaris and envirnments. With Vlume Activatin Services, yu can install and cnfigure the Key Management Service (KMS) and enable Active Directry-based Activatin. Key Management Service (KMS) KMS is a rle service that allws rganizatins t activate systems within their netwrk frm a server where a KMS hst has been installed. With KMS, IT prs can cmplete activatins n their lcal netwrk, eliminating the need fr individual cmputers t cnnect t Micrsft fr prduct activatin. KMS des nt require a dedicated system, and it can be chsted n a system that prvides ther services. By default, vlume editins f Windws 8 (r later editins) and Windws Server 2012 (r later editins) cnnect t a system that hsts the KMS service t request activatin. N actin is required frm the user. Active Directry-based Activatin Active Directry-based Activatin is a rle service that allws yu t use Active Directry Dmain Services (AD DS) t stre activatin bjects, which can further simplify the task f maintaining vlume activatin services fr a netwrk. With Active Directry-based Activatin, n additinal hst server is needed, and activatin requests are prcessed during cmputer startup. Any cmputers running Windws 8 (r later editins) and Windws Server 2012 (r later editins) with a Generic Vlume License Key (GVLK) that are cnnected t the dmain will activate autmatically and transparently. They will stay activated as lng as they remain members f the dmain and maintain peridic cntact with a dmain cntrller. Activatin takes place after the licensing service starts. When this service starts, the cmputer running Windws 8 (r later editins) and Windws Server 2012 (r later editins) RD cntacts AD DS autmatically, receives the activatin bject, and activates withut user interventin. Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter editins will cntinue t have the same licensing mdel as Windws Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter editins. The editins are differentiated by virtualizatin rights nly (tw OSEs fr Standard and unlimited OSEs fr Datacenter). A single license cvers up t tw physical prcessrs. Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required fr each user r device accessed. The Windws Server 2012 related CALs prvide entitlement t access and use Windws Server 2012 R2 functinality. 2. What is the difference between Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard editin and Windws Server 2012 R2 Datacenter editin? Bth Standard and Datacenter editins prvide the same set f features; the differentiatr is the number f Virtual Operating System Envirnments (VOSE). A Standard editin license entitles up t tw VOSEs n up t tw prcessrs (subject t the VOSE use rights utlined in the Prduct Use Rights dcument fr Vlume Licensing r End User License Agreement fr ther channels). A Datacenter editin license entitles an unlimited number f VOSEs n up t tw prcessrs. 3. Will the Windws Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2 licensing mdels cntinue t be aligned? Yes. Bth Windws Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2 have similar licensing structures. These include tw editins: Standard and Datacenter. Single licenses that cver up t tw physical prcessrs. Editins differentiated by virtualizatin rights nly (tw fr Standard; unlimited fr Datacenter). Hw d I determine which Windws Server 2012 R2 editin is right fr me? Because there is feature parity between Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter editins, yur decisin will be based n yur virtualizatin strategy; virtualizatin rights are the nly differentiatr between editins. If yur strategy calls fr a highly virtualized envirnment, Datacenter editin will prvide yu with ptimum flexibility because it allws fr unlimited virtualizatin. This editin allws yu the elasticity t add and mve virtual OSEs acrss Datacenter licensed servers withut needing t track the virtual OSE cunt n that server. If yu d nt plan n a highly virtualized envirnment, April

If yu purchase Standard editin tday but find yu need t expand the virtualizatin capacity f yur licensed server, yu can d ne f the fllwing: 1. Purchase additinal Standard editin licenses and assign them t the same physical server giving yu the rights t run additinal instances f Windws Server. The server must have the apprpriate number f licenses assigned t it t ensure cverage f all f the virtual OSEs that are running at any given time. 2. Purchase a Sftware Assurance Step-up license t Datacenter editin, changing the license t a higher editin that allws unlimited virtual OSEs. T use this benefit, yur underlying license must have Sftware Assurance. 6. If I have a Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard editin license, hw can I increase my virtualizatin rights? With the Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard editin licensing mdel, yu can grw yur virtualizatin envirnment by either buying a step-up license t Datacenter editin if yu have Sftware Assurance, r by simply buying additinal Standard editin licenses and assigning them t the same physical server. The server must have the apprpriate number f licenses assigned t it t ensure cverage f all f the virtual OSEs that are running at any given time. Fr example, if yu have a twprcessr server and want t run a ttal f fur VOSEs, yu can purchase tw Standard editin licenses and assign them t the same server. Additinal examples are shwn in the fllwing table. Number f Standard editin licenses n a single server Ttal number f VOSEs Hw d I calculate the number f licenses I need fr a server? The number f licenses yu will need depends n the number f physical prcessrs n the server and the number f server instances that yu will be running. (This applies nly fr Standard editin because Datacenter editin allws fr unlimited VOSEs.) The larger f these tw numbers determines the number f ttal licenses required. First, determine the number f physical prcessr licenses: Each license cvers up t tw physical prcessrs, s t determine the number f licenses needed t fully license a physical server, just cunt the number f physical prcessrs in the server and divide that number by tw. This tells yu the number f licenses that yu will need. (Nte: The number f cres n the physical prcessr is irrelevant.) Here are sme examples: Tw-prcessr server: 2 physical prcessrs / 2 (number f prcessrs cvered by a license) equals 1. Yu will need ne license t cver a tw-prcessr server. Fur-prcessr server: 4 physical prcessrs / 2 (number f prcessrs cvered by a license) equals 2. Yu will need tw licenses t cver a fur-prcessr server. Eight-prcessr server: 8 physical prcessrs / 2 (number f prcessrs cvered by a license) equals 4. Yu will need fur licenses t cver an eight-prcessr server. Secnd, determine the number f virtual instances running: Yu can either cunt the number f VOSEs that are running and determine the number f Standard editin licenses (ne license cvers up t tw VOSEs), r yu can purchase Datacenter, which enables unlimited VOSEs n the server. T determine the number f Windws Server Standard editin licenses yu need, cunt the ttal number f ttal VOSEs that yu will run n the server; divide that number by tw, and rund up t the nearest whle number. After yu determine the number f licenses needed t cver physical prcessrs and/r VOSEs, the higher f thse tw numbers represents the ttal number f licenses required. Remember that the server must have the apprpriate number f licenses assigned t it t ensure cverage f all f the virtual OSEs that are running at any given time Fr example, if yu are running three virtual machines (VOSEs) n a tw-prcessr server, yu will require tw licenses t cver the three virtual machines. If yu assign tw Standard editin licenses t a single server, yu will be able t run a ttal f fur VOSEs n that server. If yu add additinal Standard editin licenses t that server, the number f allwed VOSEs n that particular server will increase by tw fr a ttal f six VOSEs n that server. 8. Can I use ne Standard license t cver a ne-prcessr server? Yes. The Standard editin license will allw yu t license up t tw physical prcessrs n a single server; hwever, it des nt require the server t have tw physical prcessrs. 9. Can I split my Windws Server 2012 R2 license acrss multiple servers? N. Each license can be assigned nly t a single physical server. 10. Can I assign a Windws Server 2012 R2 license t a virtual machine? N. A license is assigned t the physical server. Each license will cver up t tw physical prcessrs. After assigning the license(s) t a physical server, yu nw have the rights t use the VOSE n that server. 11. Can I mix Datacenter and Standard licenses n the same server? N. All f the prcessrs n a given server must be licensed with the same versin and editin. Yu can run different editins r lder versins f Windws Server sftware as guests within VOSEs, but yu are nt allwed t assign multiple licenses f different versins r editins t the same physical server t license the prcessrs n the server. 12. If I want t use the sftware frm an earlier Windws Server versin r editin, what are my ptins? If yu have Windws Server 2012 R2 Datacenter editin, yu have the right t dwngrade sftware bits t any prir versin r lwer editin. If yu have Windws Server 2012 R2 Standard editin, yu have the right t dwngrade the sftware t use any prir versin f Enterprise, Standard, r Essentials editins. The ability t dwngrade des nt change the licensing r supprt terms in which yu can use the prduct; the purchased prduct (Windws Server 2012 R2) rights apply. This means that the license will cntinue t cver tw physical prcessrs, and the virtualizatin rights d nt change.
